AM Pacific

Troops,
?
What's the secret to getting the gear of the driver to mesh with the gear of the drive train when replacing the driver's?
?
Griff

Edited

Patience, trial and error.?
?
If you think the Pacific is hard, the Northern's even harder.

My project is to change the driver's from hi rail to scale.
?
Rich, the Northern worked like a champ, in fact it was done second.
?
The Pacific wasn't running so I set it aside to ponder on. When I went back to it was when I found the gears weren't meshing.
?
I'll try again.
?
Thanks,
Griff

Hi Griff, I did the same thing, swapped out hi rail for scale drivers. ?Mine dropped in with out any problems. ?Can¡¯t remember what I did exactly, but was real easy. ?
Good luck,

Install all of your drivers wheels in and make sure they are timed. Then install one of the idler gears in place. You will have to pull one of the outside axles up a little to get idler gear to drop all of way in place. Check the timing on those two drivers. If it isn¡¯t in time lift the driver up some and rotate it one tooth in the direction you need to get the drivers in time. Repeat for the other side. Hope that helps.?

I do just a bit of repair work of mostly removing AM smoke units and DCC installed in their place.? But traditionally they also have locked mechanisms.? After a few minutes of tinkering, I thought it best to send it in.? Resetting the drivers was expensive; enough so that I didn't want to buy one.

So this makes me think that rather going tooth by tooth, to get things right... there might be a jig to help with that.? I think AF had such a method back in the day!? So I wonder if Doug Peck wasn't selling such a tool for the AF re-builders?
