Who done it?

Can someone ID this loco, and tell us the builder? It appears to be mostly a SSLS build, with a lot of embellishments. It's a beautiful job.
Tommy?

I can not but you have touched on a subject that I have been thinking hard about. And that is an etched plate for the bottom of my builds with a “Built by Mike Swederska”. Just for this reason.?

Don't let perfection get in the way of good enough! Keep model railroading fun!

I like it. After all, the Importers have a plate from their builders, usually on loco and tender frames.

While I wasn't in S scale when SSL&S was flourishing, my reading of documents suggests the first project for the idea was supposed to be a Lima Berkshire, so presumably this is one.? As to who put it together, I'd have no idea.

Back when the loco was still being developed Claude put together a Circuit Letter for those who would be building one. I don't recall how long the process took but I bet it was a couple of years. ? It was a great idea to keep the guys from around the country working on a single engine.? Sharing and debating construction methods was the idea.?

The weathering on this loco is very much like Frank Titman did with loco builds. I know Frank built a bunch
of SSL&S engines, some when I was still in the club.
A move took me away and never to return, life does that.

Is that a Berkshire? John Bortz built and ran Berkshires including his large scale live steam loco. Maybe have been built and/or owned by John Bortz.

I thought the same thing Luther, thanks. If it is his work, I'd like to display it at the museum.?

Yeh, I thought about both John and Frank. I'm looking for confirmation.?

Don't forget that the Berks were sometimes started only to be finished by a second or third builder /si it's about when you mate livestock--unless the heritage can be traced most are mutts of a fashion!

I had bought the Hudson conversion kit and did a few inroads but I wasn't ready for the full trip yet.? I did a fair amount of work on the tender trucks (the kind where the journal lids could be opened!? I also acquired another that had the Nimco conversion mostly adapted.? Peter Loeb, ( is he still with us?) bought it from me--he was an owner of part of it!.?

?I love the Hudson style but the NYC versions weren't useful to me!

I agree with Tom and Luther, when I saw the weathering I was pretty sure another one of Frank’s builds…
Don Thompson?

All this Berkshire talk made me get out stuff.? Here are what look like 2 NKP Berk kits, one sheet brass boiler and one cast.? Does anyone have kits or part built ones that they could show us?

John: You do start building those !
Bill

You have any ssl&s parts??

Need a usra boiler front, top mounted bell, marker lights, headlight bracket and Sunbeam headlight
?
Thanks

John

I am pretty sure River Raisin sold out of bells before closing, but I believe they still had headlights and brackets—all remaining parts inventory went to Des Plaines.
PSC has S scale bells.

It is highly unlikely that I would build the SSLS Berkshire kit.? What I would prefer to work on would be AF Hudson and K-5 conversions to scale, but I have never found any conversion chassis.

Tommy: Could possibly have been Jack Troxell? ( SP ? ) from Texas as well. He built one for Tom Coughlan? ?of the Bristol Club at one time. Too bad these guys did not all initial their work as Bill Boucher did on almost every piece he made with his initials and a model? finished date on the models air tank underneath.. Could there be a note inside the tender ?
I have found such builders' notes inside of wooden express reefers I have had to carefully take apart to repair them.? No matter who built it looks like a great job. Bill

HI John,
Has anybody responded to your request for a smoke box front?

No. Trying to resurrect my Q O4.? I built this many years ago, in the 70s. Over the years pieces have gone missing.
