Paint for airbrushing
Hello all,?
?
I have quite a few 3D Central cars to paint and I have not used an airbrush in 20+ years.? I know that certain brands have gone out of business and one was what I used for airbrushing back in the early 80's.? ?I want to stay away from non-water based paint. I cleaned out enough paint jars with my finger wrapped with a paper towel and soaked in Dio-Sol.? No wonder I get headaches around people with strong perfume.
?
I am looking for feedback on water based paint that can be used with a basic air brush.? If there are spray paint options I am open to that as well.? ?
?
Thanks
?

If I can find it, I'll forward you an email on the topic I got from Mike Swederska. His work is on the cover of the current issue of the Dispatch. On Sat, Mar 15, 2025, 12:22?PM SDL39FAN via <sdl39fan=[email protected]> wrote:

You are probably going to get a lot of opinions, and it seems most brands and most methods of thinning, and most air brush needle sizes seem to work fine for somebody, and such and such air pressure is best, etc. I suggest picking a brand that has a color selection you really like and start experimenting. One thing that I really DO suggest is to use a commercial thinner.? Not just distilled water as recommended by some.? And not with any alcohol for thinning (there is a risk of spotting).? Of course, this or that person will swear by distilled water and/or adding a little rubbing alcohol.? Commercial thinners tend to have other things (same goes for VOC thinner) that help with drying time and such.? It seems that the Tamiya Acrylic X-20A Thinner has good comments out there. My personal experience with water-based paints has been one of annoyance.? I found it to be too much trouble to prevent sputtering and such.? Perhaps I didn't try hard enough.? I very much prefer VOC paint (I like Tru-Color paints) but I have a good spray booth. So, on this list, and/or other searching, you are not likely to find "this is definitely the one and only best way."? I suggest spending some time on research, but not a lot, and instead spend time on practice painting some old disposable cars or building sides or something. Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer

While not railroad specific, I have had good luck with . ?They have several colors that work for boxcar reds, such as MMP-014 Red Oxide and MMP-015 Rotbraun. Their MMP-014 Panzergrey is a great replacement for Floquil Grimy Black. Charles Weston

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTru Color is most accessible for me since Scalecoat ended. I have figured it out and get good results. But it SUCKS if you have to mask it for another color. Pretty much any tape pulls paint off at least on brass that has been blasted. I have not tried masking and painting on plastic, urethane or 3D printing resin. ? This car was painted with Tru Color. It went on well. ? You have to cut it a lot more then want is on the label for airbrushing. ? Thank You, ? See my layout progress at:

Bill... I'm with you on this.? I also had to resort to TruColor after the demise of Scalecoat, but have the same?issues with masking TruColor. I find the masking?problem to be even worse on?resin (SMMW) castings no matter what I use for a primer or how long I bake it.? I've also tried various masking tapes, all with the same result.? Very frustrating!? Also,TruColor requires significant thinning, per your comment, for good airbrushing. I'm using Tamiya paints now for all plastic models. It does use alcohol, but that's a lot better than the acetone in TruColor. Never had Tamiya lift off with the masking.

Rich... I've used the?3M masking?tape (Micro Mark link) exclusively until now.? In my experience it will also pull?off TruColor paint from resin and plastic.? Overall it is still probably the best masking tape out there, in both my opinion and several of the professional painter guys. Does a light clear coat help keep the paint from peeling with the mask?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMr Griff,I would not believe it would help. This issue of TC letting go is from not having a bonding agent.? Mike Swederska? On Mar 17, 2025, at 4:40?AM, rxman46321 via groups.io <rxman46321@...> wrote:
