Shapeways closed

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

As a huge surprise at least to me Shapeways gave no impending notice and suddenly closed likely forever. I was using them for my occasional printing needs. I also had a Shapeways store.

?

This still probably make me look at getting a printer again at some point.

?

Thank You,

Bill. A fairly well known local 0n3 modeler, who was also into '
'puter things actually worked with/for them.? That relationship ended a few months ago.? Might have been a warning but maybe not--one never knows about this sort of thing.? I just know he has been into doing great NG work in a very small space--.?

Can't say I'll shed any tears.? Thanks for the timely news though, I was just finalizing my Harrisburg NASG Convention clinic script on 3D coil steel cars.?? I'll have to remove the sentence: "I am not a fan of Shapeways", from the script!? The following came from a different 'io' group and pretty much sums up my experiences and opinion...

"I¡¯m not at all surprised. They shipped my last ¡°free shipping¡± order via UPS (UPS charges exorbitant brokerage fees to deliver to Canada), plus they used the wrong HS Tariff code (plastic parts) instead of the correct scale model code, resulting in a stiff duty on the order. They then refused to resolve the issue, even on future orders, so I informed them that I would no longer be ordering through them. I also made the exact same point that Jason just made: they are no longer the only game in town..."

Life goes on...

Wow!
I found lots of things on Shapeways that interested me--especially the S-scale GP38 and C420 that have been mentioned here and in our magazines, but none that pushed me over the edge to purchase. ?No knock on the designers, it was the high upfront cost of the prints and shipping that scared me off. ?
So, when an amazon prime special on a Photon anycubic SLA printer came along last father's day, I made the jump into making 3d prints for myself. ?I suspect my own personal journey multiplied on a national scale is what did Shapeways in. ?As the cost to purchase a personal 3d printer came down, Shapeways became less and less viable. ?I do sincerely hope that the designers that had their creative work on the Shapeways website can share their work on another platform, and perhaps monetize that effort by selling the design files for home printer use.

As for my 3d printing misadventures, one print in 4 is a success. ?However, each time I learn a little more about what works, and what doesn't. ?I have found lots of things available on the thingiverse website that can be used for our layouts. ?Most of the things have to be tweaked and rescaled, but if you need 1:64 vehicles, they have you covered!

I'm (hopefully) attaching a photo of some of my prints. ?While they look like print failures, these were the successes--there are a whole range of "junk" cars. ?As a kid growing up I spent a lot of weekends at the local "pick-a-part" with my dad as he acquired parts that he used to work on various vintage cars. ?So having a small junkyard on my layout was something I always wanted, but never really had the means to accomplish affordably until now.

?
Last minute edit: It appears the shapeways website is back up and running, but the chapter 7 press release is out there

I too used Shapeways for some of my 3D printing needs - especially when I found something in their Marketplace of interest to me. That having been said, my go-to company for 3D printing (both from their personal catalog and my own custom designs) is CatzPaw Innovations, LLC -- Sherri Johnson and her team have never let me down. They are experienced professionals who strive to make sure your prints are high quality and you are satisfied. I'd tried several other 3D printing firms (all disappointing) before finding CatzPaw and I am honored to promote them whenever possible. I highly recommend them to the members of this list.
