Update:? I have just three sets of points and ten No. 7 frogs left.? And a potload of No. 14 frogs.

I still have lots of nickel-silver investment-cast frogs and points, all with full nut/bolt detail.? Points require no notching of stock rails.? Points are 16'-6", I have both #7 and #14 (yes, fourteen) frogs that match code 125 rail.

If anyone is interested, $3 will et you a pair of points or a frog.? Orders under $10 will need to add postage.

Pondering or just talking to myself

Every day when I operate if a car causes problems or locomotive does something stupid the offending unit comes off the layout and gets inspected. All wheels get cleaned and gauged. Graphite to the couplers, coupler drop down pin get painted black and tipped in white. Then the unit goes to the sink for a bath. Since I color my own, I know that the dulling agent is tight and brush and water will not hurt the decals or finish. I don't dunk steamers.?

Since it is a small to medium size layout it has a 112 cars on the layout that work comfortably. My hat is off to all you guys with layouts bigger than mine with more cars and locomotives. The daily maintenance must be a lot keeping the whole thin looking good and running good.?

I will say that my layout fits almost all the criteria that was talked about in the the survey. One that was not mentioned that drives me away from a layout when visiting is dust on rolling stock. It is hard to see on a scenic layout but it looks terrible on locomotives and rolling stock.?

Something else to ponder. Steamers, why do we refer to them a she or her? Its because they have the same personalities as a woman. They operate perfectly for days and days. Then you wake up one morning and the same steamer you had been running starts to throw fits. WHY? No reason just wants to be cantankerous. Just leave it alone and run a different steamer and come back a couple days latter and she runs perfectly. Hmmm. Just crazy. Almost makes you want to go diesel.?

Printed models are a reality for our scale.? ?We have seen parts and detail item but now printed cars are showing up in significant numbers.

Sarah Griessenb?ck continues to push the envelope of the boundries of 3D modeling.? Her latest project is a UTLX 10,000 gallon tank car.? The protoype was produced in large numbers by Union Tank Car.? ?The cars were in service for many years and easily covered the 1920s through the 1970s.? No one has produced a correct model of this car.? Nearly all plastic and brass models were AC&F or General American designs.? UTLX had a unique side sills and end platforms compared to other tank car builders.

Sarah is working on her design refining features and printing.? I have included a shot of a low resolution test print.? ?As you can see the surface is a bit rough which is an artifact of the low printing resolution.? She has focused on the perfecting the design and printing faster.? High resolution printing of a car like this will take upwards of 20 hours.

The lead photos shows the tank car being printed.? The liquid resin is formed using a laser as the resin tank moves upward.

The level of detail would be hard to create in traditional production methods.? The car will likely be offered by like the 12500 gallon O-50-9 car Sarah did earlier.

By the way, the prototype data package was loaned by to Sarah by Norm Buckhart of Protocraft.? Norm had planned on a brass model of the this car but increased costs in Korea caused the cancelation.

TRU-COLOR SPECIAL 3D PAINT?

Tru-Color has produced a specialized paint for 3D printed and resin cast models.? They added adhesion promoters to the basic paint.? The paint is a single coat product with dense pigment content to cover the model.? They recommend using 28 pounds pressure and a .5mm tip.

Here is my first attempt painting with this paint.? I didn't use the right tip and had some issues with the finish.? ?The paint really covers well and seems to have a strong bond with the 3D printed resin.

NICE FISH COMPANY

Here is a recent post on FaceBook listing there new models:
Flat cars, eh?
Nice Fish Model Company is pleased to announce the first product- Museum quality, Ready to Run, O gauge and Proto:48 Canadian Pacific, and Canadian National 52'6" flat cars.
The prototypes for this car are 1952, Canadian Car and Foundry for Canadian Pacific, and National Steel Car for Canadian National models.
This model is made in Canada. No offshore design, assembly, or production was utilized, except for purchase of couplers, wheels, and wire. It is primarily plastic, with some metal parts, and it comes fully assembled and painted, save for the addition of the optional air hoses. Some obvious features of a high end model such as this are phosphor bronze wire grab irons and cut levers, etched nickel silver metal stirrup steps, Kadee couplers in scale draft gear, Grabowski steel wheels on Proto:48 models, and Intermountain metal wheels on O gauge models. There is a cold rolled steel backbone in the model, and will support 1lb indefinitely, so feel free to put your die cast bulldozer on it. The paint and lettering are matched to railroad paint chips, and the lettering is generated from official railroad lettering diagrams or directly from photos.
This model sells for $300 Canadian, and is not available in stores. The initial offering is available now, and as small batches are available, they will be listed on the shopify website for sale. A 2.5% discount is offered for Canadian etransfer sales, to offset oline fees. Shipping is flat rate $25 worldwide. These are very limited run, with a total of 50 units produced, 25 CN and 25 CP. Once sold out, they will most likely not be available again for several years.
Thank you, and I look forward to continue serving you in the model railroad industry.

Re: Frog and Point Castings

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Mr T. C. talks about rail sizes,? However if one were to buy a few of those frogs, get them a bit rusty and lay off to the side, It's probably a good cosmetic detail ignoring of a few thousands in size.? If you've every gathered a handful of those lead castings you'll be adding up some serious coin.

So when you buy a dozen of those, I'm Dick will send me a commission check to make my old memory still seem worthwhile!

I don't follow the S-Trains posts, but it's my guess that that group tends to have fewer people actually building models. In my opinion, modeling questions, responses, and comments account for most of our S-Scale messages.

Re: TEST

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Rance,

I subscribe to all of the S-related Groups.io mailing list, and it is very rare to see anything on the "S-Trains" group. It has always been that way since Yahoo Groups went away and Groups.io started up.

This "S-Scale" group is the most active out of all. The Sn3 group gets some activity, and occassionally there is little bit of activity in the Sn2 group. Most of the others are pretty much dormant.

No reply from the Groups.IO "support" person/persons.? Nothing in my Spectrum spam folders (I have one connected to email inbox and one with the folders group.? I did check my profile with the Groups.IO site and nothing has been bouncing.? I just now changed digest mode to simple text ... maybe photos and additional info included with emails is causing an issue.? My next attempt will be to add a group and see if that comes thru.

I have an original OMI ALCO S-1. Never had couplers installed, apparently not run much. It has all the detail parts in the bags and the original paperwork from Overland?
dated 1986. There is a crinkle dink to one corner of the box. The box also had what I think was a price tag that has been removed.

I bought the model from a hobby shop in
Westminster CA. when not thinking. I was looking for the S-2, oh well.?

$380 including Priority ?Mail shipping
