Re: For Sale, various cars and parts

Jim, wasn't there an issue with the Lionel bolsters, or is that for a different series?
Someone produced a new 3D printed piece for them?

The same is true for most diesel-electric locomotives. Steam engine are the biggest challenge, both in the difficulty of conversion and the availability of parts. And some are just impossible, because the drivers are too close to accommodate hirail flanges.

Sacramento Northern SMMW 44 Tonner #147

I finally got round to finishing up my Smokey Mountain Model Works resin GE 44 tonner kit.? The Sacramento Northern's #147 was an early Phase 1 loco (1947) acquired second hand by the SN and was the final 44 tonner on their roster.? My SN 1970's era loco roster is now up to three locomotives, per the attached photo.

Re: 2-4-4-T

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I may have been hazy on the progression; perhaps it was Rex, then Sudimak (J&S?), last Putt, where it has sat on the shelf for some years???
I am not clear when the nylon gearing was introduced, although I suspect it may have been Putt (with the can motor); the mogul with those I once owned was sold to me as a Putt re-issue.??
My understanding is that the Ace equalized Bettendorfs differ from the Rex/Culp primarily because the latter have cast-in brakeshoes; any Ace equalized I've acquired have been in passing as I much prefer their sprung version (for personal rather than operational reasons).
If I have ever encountered Culp Andrews trucks I have not identified them as such; I've tended to consider any older Andrews trucks as just? Northeastern.

I was not aware that Jack Sudimak had any connection with Putt Trains.

Regarding trucks, Culp did indeed produce an Andrews truck (with coil or leaf springs). Rex made only one truck, a Buckeye Bettendorf-style truck. It was equalized but not sprung. Both makes are described on the NASG site:

Oriental SW-1 For Sale

Hi,

My SW-1 has been in storage for a number of years.

It's? painted Southern Pacific Tiger Stripe # 1004

I haven't run it for about 15 years except to test it a few days ago.

The cap on?the stack is missing.??The horn came off but is in the box.

It has a very?old DCC unit that probably needs to be replaced.? I would also suggest a "Keep Alive" unit as it has a tendency to stall.

$350.00 plus shipping

Pictures on?request, please contact me directly.??Let me know if you are interested.

Take care,
Bill

Rex Suburban Truck (was: Re: [S-Scale] 2-4-4-T)

Rex never made an Andrew¡¯s truck with flexible leaf springs. ?The early 2-4-4T Suburban kit (my first loco build ar age 14, in 1953) had a Cult leaf-sprung Andrews trailing truck. ?And the cast wheels were robbed on the back side.

(These somewhat large Culp Andrews trucks are nearly dead ringers for the Benner¡¯s Crown trucks found beneath PRR Class H21 quad hopper cars.)

A few years later I reworked my Suburban into a true NYC Class D2-a. ?Main changes: shortening the coal bunker and altering cab appearance. ?No photos, but Dave Jasper currently owns the loco.

Trucks ... was Restarting...

NASG's Brass Car Committee (Don T., Mike F. and myself) ordered the OMI brass sprung Bettendorf 'T' section trucks as part of the NASG ACF Tank Car Project back in 1986.? The committee didn't? have much extra money so we were only able to get something like 100 pair.? They were gone in a flash.? Wish we could have ordered 500!?

Simon Parent did all the work and 3D manufacture on the Pre-Size trucks.? His 'T' section Bettendorf's are also of the sprung variety.? All Simon's and Pre-Size trucks go nicely with his kits and also the (sold out) NYC Spec 486 boxcar kit he and I did 4 or 5 years ago.

Jim,
Question, did you cast your trucks in brass??

Mike Swederska

?? Mike:
Not 100% sure of your question?? If you are asking whether I personally cast brass, the answer is 'No'.? That is done using a third party brass caster in California.? I've worked with Scott MacKenzie to create 3D files after tracking down all the necessary dimensional drawings.? Over the years, I've accumulated probably a hundred truck drawings, most for 50 & 55 ton steam-era trucks.? The next step is creating oversize master patterns from those 3D files using Stereolithography (SLA).? Once tested and checked for form and fit, those patterns can go to the caster...
IMG_5063.JPG
It is not an inexpensive way to make parts and the trucks are not as detailed as SMMW, but they satisfy my needs.? I've probably done 10 (or more) different trucks that way - 'T' section Bettendorfs to a couple contemporary styles of 70" wheelbase, 100-ton Barbers.? I guess trucks have become a bit of an expensive obsession.?
Take care...
