SHS SW-8 Cab Removal

I am trying to get at the interior of the subject cab.? I see that it is a separate piece of plastic, but I cannot get it to separate from the body.? The manual says to release a tab below the cab side window, but I don't such a tab.? Anyone know how to do this?? Many thanks in advance!

I've got at least 5-6 of these and like them, as it is a prototype otherwise not available in S scale.? They go well mixed with PRS ACF cars, as well as the newer resin kits from Ben Trousdale.??
I ended up with the three Canadian schemes, but pretty much all the others I've bought have been stripped (a royal pain) and relettered.? A few of the stock schemes seem correct, but the "heritage" schemes probably appeal more to the AF operator types than to me.?

Jim, wasn't there an issue with the Lionel bolsters, or is that for a different series?
Someone produced a new 3D printed piece for them?

For these particular Lionel-produced covered hoppers, if you see a paint scheme you like, buy it - they’re nice cars. You can buy a set of Lionel trucks from Lionel (only sold separately with hirail wheels, I believe), swap trucks, and sell the “scale”version to a fellow modeler. Some people have also swapped out the trucks for American Models hirail roller-bearing trucks.

The same is true for most diesel-electric locomotives. Steam engine are the biggest challenge, both in the difficulty of conversion and the availability of parts. And some are just impossible, because the drivers are too close to accommodate hirail flanges.

I converted 5-6 of my AF covered hoppers with Ben's bolsters and was very pleased with the result.

Brooks,

?

LOOK!!!!!

?

New ballast!!! The main lines are completely ballasted now for the first time ever. A few turnouts have been blank for about 4 years. My down ramps are done too.

?

?

This is my money shot - possibly my favorite photo I have taken of my layout so far but you did not use it because of no ballast in places.

?

Very early tomorrow I will be getting my hernia fixed. Hopefully that is not tied to the very unexpected sale of a large S Scale collection. I will be out of work for 6 weeks. My goal is to have all the ballast done before going back to work.

Re: For Sale, various cars and parts

Except for the car’s last catalog listing or two, the car was too high off rail head. ?I made a 3D printed replacement truck bolster that fixed that issue. ?It was mostly a concern for modelers using Kadee 802 or similar couplers and draft gear. ?Lionel changed the truck to fix it in the last catalog listing(s). ?

Another fix was to replace the AF trucks with AM, SHS/MTH or S Scale America trucks. ?

I like the rotating bearing ends, which is why I wanted a way to fix and keep the trucks on the cars.
?
The bolsters are still available. ?Go to my Benn Central Shops Facebook page to find out more.

Sacramento Northern SMMW 44 Tonner #147

I finally got round to finishing up my Smokey Mountain Model Works resin GE 44 tonner kit.? The Sacramento Northern's #147 was an early Phase 1 loco (1947) acquired second hand by the SN and was the final 44 tonner on their roster.? My SN 1970's era loco roster is now up to three locomotives, per the attached photo.

I may have been hazy on the progression; perhaps it was Rex, then Sudimak (J&S?), last Putt, where it has sat on the shelf for some years???
I am not clear when the nylon gearing was introduced, although I suspect it may have been Putt (with the can motor); the mogul with those I once owned was sold to me as a Putt re-issue.??
My understanding is that the Ace equalized Bettendorfs differ from the Rex/Culp primarily because the latter have cast-in brakeshoes; any Ace equalized I've acquired have been in passing as I much prefer their sprung version (for personal rather than operational reasons).
If I have ever encountered Culp Andrews trucks I have not identified them as such; I've tended to consider any older Andrews trucks as just? Northeastern.

I was not aware that Jack Sudimak had any connection with Putt Trains.

Regarding trucks, Culp did indeed produce an Andrews truck (with coil or leaf springs). Rex made only one truck, a Buckeye Bettendorf-style truck. It was equalized but not sprung. Both makes are described on the NASG site:
