I did a group shot of my SW1 2025 collection. 2 are brass. I painted 4 of them in this photo.

Re Craig Wright's layout

I don't normally spend a lot of time doing model railroad viewing, but the tour of Craig's Sn3 layout was an informative and enjoyable hour. His modelling is superb and I like the way he thinks about layout design and the hobby in general. The phrase "well done" is inadequate. Thanks for the link Brooks.

Jim Martin?

Craig Wright's presentation of his C&TW Sn3 layout that was presented recently on a narrow gauge forum is now available for viewing on YouTube:
I think it's fair to say Craig's layout is among the finest ever built in any scale at any time in the history of our great hobby.? His presentation is worth watching.? The layout is an inspiration.? Simply stunning!

That’s a good explanation of technique. I just want to say that the biggest advantage of using water base is its ability to dry very quickly using a hair drier on every coat.?

Water dries by evaporation through air movement via the hair drier. Sure, a little heat is fine but not a lot.

Surface prep is the same as any model water base paint.?

Using a pill bottle to mix in has the same surface tension as most plastic models. Putting just several drop in the bottle and then start adding tap water a little at a time. Stir and then tilt the bottle for the paint to coat the inside and then watch how it leaves a coat on the wall. You’re looking for a consistent somewhat see through coat. Make sure there is no lumps or little bitty chunks that look like dirt specs. If so you need to start over as you may have not mixed the paint well enough before your pour.?

You will need to turn up your air to get the droplets to atomize.?

The glycerin is for some of the heavier pigmented paints. I use straight water on all the colors first.?

Have fun with it. I can talk to this subject all day but won’t.

Re: Different coupler types on the same layout

By my reckoning, the distance between cars using standard 802 mounting is about 3.5 scale feet be it AM, PRS or SHS.? Is 3/32nds of a real inch really worth worrying about??

< Prototype distance between car ends is 3’>

?

Bud, I agree.? However that is not what I’ve observed with 802s.? I believe you can tinker with the 802 to get it to the 3 ft spacing.? But out of the box, without altering, I don’t think so.? Also for me is the cost.? The #5 family of couplers is significantly cheaper.? And then there is the variety of shank length and coupler placement on the shank.? Another thing is the newer ‘whisker’ design for the centering spring.

?

< the uncoupling pins on the 5's are too short if you are using magnetic uncoupling>

?

No need to bend the pin down if you use duel magnets for your uncoupling ramps.? See attached photos…

You might think that having 10 SW1 might be enough. But maybe not. I have 2 more I would like to make – Southern and Conrail.

I am not in any hurry but if you have any preferably unlettered SHS SW1 # 00442 you want to sell I could be interested…..

Re: Different coupler types on the same layout

As I don't do a lot of switching, I've cut back on replacing AM's Snap-Lock couplers with 802's.? I'll replace them occasionally, especially locomotives, but othrwise I'm in no hurry.

Rich G(ajnak)

Re: Different coupler types on the same layout

I have a mix of 802's and #5's, although they look nice and are more common the uncoupling pins on the 5's are too short if you are using magnetic uncoupling.? You can bend them down to where they will activate but they lose their lever arm and won't fully open.

FS: River Raisin GE 44-tonner

开云体育

Probably my favorite prototype, but I am ambivalent about needing three of these (plus three SMMW kits and a Penn Heritage and two LWS).
So to see whether anyone wants one more than I do, here is a strict mint (I don't think I've even test-run it), asking $475 and shipping.

Re: Different coupler types on the same layout

My reason for starting off with?#5 couplers was the fact that I had a lot of them after changing over from HO..

I do use the 800 series on cars that I take to the club display.

I don’t get why some use the HO #5 couplers to get “closer” coupling. Prototype distance between car ends is 3’ other than modern day cushion draft couplings. As a retired 31 year railroader I sure appreciated that amount of room to go between to couple air hoses, anything less would’ve been difficult, even before I put on the added weight!

Gaylord Gill in April 2025 MODEL RAILROADER

The April 2025 digital edition of MODEL RAILROADER is out.? Why the April issue is out in mid-February isn't clear (!) but there's a nice 1/2 page photo of Gaylord Gill's layout in the TRACKSIDE PHOTOS feature.? Gaylord's is the first of about 8 photos I collected and submitted to MR.? ?Thanks to all those who offered images!? 72,000 readers will see Gaylord's nice photo...and Eric left the link to the NASG website in the caption we prepared so maybe we'll generate some 'traffic' to the site.
?
My offer remains open to assist anyone who wants to submit a photo to MR.
?
By the way, I noticed the April issue has shrunk to 68 pages, down about 10% from 76 pages in March.
