Re: Alan Evans

"He [Alan Evans] always seemed happy guiding folks with the NASG modules."

I definitely saw that in action.? In 2003 (?) at the Carmel, IN meet, my oldest son "played" with the NASG module for at least 1.5 hours.? Alan didn't mind at all and seemed tickled that a youngster was interested.? Thankfully no one else wanted to operate the layout.? I recall my son was very upset when we had to leave - Alan kidded me about that for years afterwards.? He will be missed.

I'm distressed at Alan's passing, but with all his stuff being sold months ago, we all saw the writing on the wall.? Another missing element was that Alan was a UP modeler of sorts, so with the loss of Arden Goehring, a few years ago, I don't know of any other UP fans at this time!??

We shared a room at one convention.? It was probably one of the Cleveland Conventions as he arranged for a couple of boxes of items I was selling--he was my UPS? delivery guy or sorts.

His daughter and husband moved down to Houston years ago, so when he would visit he'd stop by our usual Thursday night work/BS sessions in Troxell's garage.? After Jack had to bow out, he visited the group in my second story layout room.? I never met his wife but we talked a time or two, as I think she also had a bout of illness but recovered... perhaps she'll be relocating here. ? His daughter was married to an undertaker in the Houston area but I never had the opportunity to connect with them.?

Alan was always helpful to me and our merry band of S; likewise I hoped I helped a bit with his life! He always seemed happy guiding folks with the NASG modules.

I'm surprised. The info is on the NASG website, however. Being a long-time personal friend and fellow 1965 graduate of Ohio University. I?received phone calls last evening and this morning from COSG members and Alan's wife, Pat also. He had been suffering for two years or so from dementia and stroke related symptoms?and passed away?yesterday (1/22) evening. Pat says a memorial service will be down the road in a month or two. As many of you know, after the?1965 graduation we lost touch until Alan discovered some of my articles in Model Railroader. Before that I didn't know he was a model railroader too. Then we met at the 1990 NMRA/NASG convention (I was there for Kalmbach where I was working then). We talked trains and enjoyed the large NASG modular layout. Then we got together again in the fall at the 25th anniversary of our OU graduation. After several more meetings at Fests and Sprees, he and Chuck Porter coaxed me into liking S. I still had tons of unopenedHO boxes in my Wisconsin basement that I moved from WV in 1988. In 1993 with Alan as NASG president, I was coerced into the Dispatch editorship. Since then we have met at most NASG conventions plus many Fests and Sprees. For an early bio of Alan you can check out "Meet an S Gauger" in the June 1996 Dispatch.? It's sad to lose an old friend.? ?Jeff Madden

Tedious S Scale History (aka Larry Jackman and Trucks (was Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies

开云体育

Never had any Gunderson stuff—rather too modern for my tastes—and Larry Jackman's role in anything is something of a mystery.? I am aware what Don Thompson had related, that Jackman seemed very (or too) interested in the SHS tank car project, so much so that he scooped them; I believe the Bettendorf?
trucks that came with the original SSA tank car kits have the same attachment arrangement between side frame and bolster.? I am not clear from your earlier message whether Jackman did the Gundersons, or whether they were purely a DPH project, or possibly whether Jackman did the die work for DPH—and Ron Sebastian is no longer around to clarify that.

Larry Jackman is an interesting research problem for model railroad historians.? I never met him, but he was a member of the O scale chat list in the early days of the internet in the late 1990's.? Apparently he worked for the Santa Fe in Kansas earlier in his life and did a number of scale drawings, mostly for RMC in the 1960's.
When he was on the chat list, I think he first has retired to Florida with his wife, but when she died he went to live with his daughter in Washington.? I seem to recall that he made some HO car kits in styrene at one time, pretty sure he never did an O scale, as I was reasonably au courant about anything produced there for forty years.

As to PRS, my understanding is that John Verser was a partner in Intermountain in Denver ca. 1990 when they began producing highly-detailed, all-plastic car kits, starting with the 40' AAR boxcar, followed by the 40' steel refrigerator car, both of which ended up with exactly the same construction as the PRS S scale kits.? The other PRS kits, for the ACF covered hopper and 50' boxcar, had other sources.? Moreover, one of the PRS truck kits, the Bettendorf, shares the same design features as the Intermountain—spring planks and brake beams.? At some point I understand John sold his interest in Intermountain and began PRS in Oregon with his son, Felix.? Interestingly, the PRS box and refrigerator car kits sold for about the same list price as their O scale counterparts.? I don't know nearly enough about technology and its history to know whether the original Intermountain kit dies were computer-generated, although if so John would presumably have found it fairly straightforward to produce S scale dies.? Die work has always been the most expensive part of styrene kit manufacture.

From your last message, John had not yet developed any trucks for PRS when he did the ACF kits (perhaps apart from the Intermountain-type Bettendorfs, which would not have been suitable for the covered hoppers), so that tends to confirm my inference that the earlier runs came without trucks.? At some point he developed the National B-1 and ASF Ride Control trucks, mostly for the 40' cars, and they share the locking feature common to your roller bearings (and the SSA tanks).? And, I suggest, the roller bearings with integral brake beams.? A last thought: he presumably developed his own wheelsets with plastic wheels and double-insulated axles?
but when SHS began production in China was able to buy superior metal ones in quantity cheaply from Don Thompson (who can confirm or dispel my assumption).

What role, if any, Larry Jackman had with PRS trucks I have no idea.? Unless John and Felix could do die-work inhouse (and someone had to do it for the ACF and 50' cars), someone must also have done their truck dies.? A last thought: the SSA tank Bettendorfs I own do not have brake shoes, but both the B-1 and ASF trucks do (unhappily, and frustratingly, different from each other.? I'll need to check, but I think my DPH tank car trucks do have brakeshoes.

I went to check the NASG website before writing to see whether Peter had sorted out the various PRS trucks, and I thought I remembered him having a section on S scale trucks but couldn't find it.

?
Jace,? Although I wasn't that much in the loop, John and I talked frequently regarding some of his projects.? Some of those projects were in the development of the 2 flat boxcar kits (X29 & CGW) that Desplains/ SSA finally released.? When I was shooting his ad photos of the ACF as well as some of his the 50' (DD) boxcars I would ask him about RB trucks.? He always returned with the Ace versions.? He was reluctant to tool any RBs.?

When I came to the first ever ACF hopper cars, I was handed a test shot for the 3/16's S Magazine intro photo.? That happened at one of the NASG conventions, Pittsburgh perhaps!? I later talked with Walt and he was semi happy to have John buy back what he didn't sell.? I put that test shell in a drawer someplace, over the next few years,I purchased several of the kits and gradually took those excess parts and added nearly all the missing parts and drilled mounting holes in that test shot.? The final result was a multi colored car just like old Johnny Cash's Cadillac car/song!
?
I'll stick with my version that those trucks were original from Jackman and only modified when or shortly after he went belly up! Now however the trucks now sold by SSA are another version all together!

Actually, Bob, I'm pretty sure those are both PRS RB trucks.? Perhaps someone on the list knows the actual story, but when John Verser introduced his ACF kit, it came without trucks (I infer much of the first production run went to G&W in Syracuse).? At some later point he developed the trucks with integral brake beams.??
I think the other ones came even earlier, but I am not sure.? That indented half shaft to hold the side frame was a common feature of PRS trucks.

I was making some new shots, so I couple of minutes in my
'truck' drawer brought out some of the SSA/DesPlains Husky type RB trucks.? I had mentioned yesterday the two types produced.? They are shown in these photos.? Notice one is the first mostly unequalized version, while the other has a mounting 'peg' that allows for more equalization movement.? I also put in a wheel that originally came with them...notice the roughness of the wheel--not a bad sound if you want emphasis on flat spots on wheels !? That truck works well with my single QualiCraft all door boxcar of old--still a great looking car, BTW!

I suspected as much and was not planning on "heavy" containers unless i would choose to beef up the sides of the cars by sistering in some thicker stock styrene as a possibility.? Early on with the Des Plaines and S Scale America Huskies, I found they can carry ONLY lightweight containers (plastic, foamcore, paper or cardboard). Die cast containers, while great as scenery, are too heavy for the frame and bolsters. I have one of these cars that is parked on a spur with nowhere to go (maybe the track owner will receive a storage fee). The frame is permanently bowed and the bolsters are bent. It took only a few hours on a display for the damage to occur.
