Re: Scale Trains sale

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank you Rich;

I had not looked at the availability of there regular stock, just saw it was all listed. I was under the impression that they had lots of stock remaining from comments on here. If they are truly sold out then that should encourage them to make more. And that should be a good thing. Perhaps not so much doom and gloom after all.

Of course, I'm in no position to tell AM how to invest in their product line, but I often thought putting a 2-8-2 drive under the Pacific boiler would make a reasonable representation of a USRA Heavy Mike.? Granted the Heavy wasn't as wide spread as the Light, but it would probably be the best "bang for the buck."

Hi Pieter;

When I looked on the Thanksgiving sale page for S scale it only showed a very few items offered. So I expect it is only the slowest moving items in there inventory, not all there stock. Nothing there I wanted, I would like to be mistaken on this. ? ??

Anthony,? I have a matching pair of PA's for sale for several months.? From what I can tell, they are NIB, NYC paint, scale wheels too.? That's what you've asked for!? Contact me:? Bob@...? for a photo or two if you're really serious.?

As an aside,? I've often been curious about how many sets that AM (or SHS, AF or ??) made for sale--gosh I made those ad photos maybe 10-15 years ago, so that might be a clue why they were still listed on line just a few weeks ago.? Eventually things do sell out but if sales are that slow, the need as been satisfied so not much demand for a 2nd run!? A couple thousand S scalers are needed for more demand.

I do recall that Tom Marsh of Overland made three runs of his SD40-2s.? If a 'run' was 100 units and he produced several variations that I thought should be a decent run and accomplishment to keep producing a popular product.? I'm sure that Dan at RR in producing specific steam might not have produced those numbers but hats off for that effort.? For me he just didn't make enough UP items, then again I didn't have to buy any Harriaman style models that could be dressed as UP!? Oh well!?

Re: American Models

Since we have brought the subject up, what is the status of the USRA 4-6-2, Empire State Express, Pennsy Torpedo?
Are there any new steam engines being planned?? Is a USRA light 2-8-2 worthwhile, since the AF Flyer one is unacceptable to most in this group.
How does a manufacturer such as American even decide what to make?? ?Maybe much of what is written here does not convert into sales.

I have spoken with Joe recently.

I asked him about new products. His answer was we have some projects in line.

Asked him about locos. The answer was there is a mix in the works.

Bill, I always enjoy pictures of your trackwork. You can get such nice flowing tracks by hand laying it.?

Before I built my last layout, I looked at buying the jigs, but I would have needed so many variations, and some for only one turnout, so I didn't buy any. It was a good decision. One of the first turnouts I built for that layout was a 48"/44" curved dual gauge turnout. Originally I was planning on making the inner radius 45", but that made the turnout too large. It was large enough, and the K frog was huge, There was also a curved Sn2 track that ran across the two sets of rails just after the last frog. That layout had lots of curved turnouts, some asymmetrical wye turnouts and all kinds of dual gauge variations. And then there were the three dual gauge three-way stub turnouts. My favorite was the one where all three routes curved the same way. It got to the point where laying a standard turnout was kind of boring.

The track work on my current layout is not quite as adventurous, but I'm not finished yet.?

Learning how to hand lay turnouts allows for a lot of peculiar turnout shapes, various curved turnouts, asymmetrical?wyes, and so on.? ?Buying jigs for every possibility is grossly too expensive.? ?Building in place is fun.? If you mess with more?than one gauge, there are more than a dozen versions relating to dual gauge -- I know, because I think I have built at least one of every type.? Some photos are attached.? ?One is of a curved std gauge turnout of 75" and 78" radius that is two feet between the points and the frog, a #16.? You can't buy that!? There is also a photo of one of Dick Karnes' "puzzle tracks" where the turnouts also include a crossing through them.? Amazing!?

Have fun!

I don't think there is any high skill level needed for any of the steps.? Just follow the steps they have on their web site.

For somebody balking at the idea of making their own switches, it might at least be worth giving it a try.? Fast Track says the first switch might take you three hours but eventually you can get it down to 45 minutes.? And many sizes AND wyes AND curved turnouts.

Yes.? It is a lot more work than just buying them ready made.? But it does solve the problem of "i can't find ready made switches I need."

For those who cannot wait for drop-in turnouts, attached is a two-part Dick Karnes article on building your own.

Dick uses an unusual approach to making the frog. I myself have not built any turnouts using his method, so I cannot comment on his technique. Instead, I saved the article to try out on my next layout.

Otherwise, the recent discussion has revealed many options for S scalers beyond the beginner stage. I found the most interesting was the reference by TC Talmadge to the kits from S Scale Track Works <> that include the frog, guard rails, and point rails.
