Re: RDC-3 (with RPO & baggage)

Hello Matt.......Sorry, but I do not have photos of the interior.? The main visible improvement was the addition of seats and passengers.? I attempted to place the height of the passenger's eyes at about midway on the windows.? To do this, some spacers (shims?) beneath the seats were needed in order to obtain the correct height.? I just glued everything to the floor. Adding window "glass" and window shades was not difficult.? A standing conductor is in there somewhere if I remember correctly.? These improvements sure do make a difference in the overall appearance of a bare brass beauty from Korea.? Cheers.......Ed L.

Re: hypothetical question with a real answer

Hi Mike,?
On the? Model Railroad podcasts I am involved with, I often talk S Scale and feature how great things operate and the "feel" of the larger scale.? A podcast aimed at S Scalers, I would feature the new things coming into the market.? I would also feature modelers who are doing well in the scale.? It would be good to share ideas and tips.? I would absolutely not have the conversation of flanges and rail height because it has so little to do with "modeling" and operating a good layout.? I would not suggest a wide open zoom but rather a broadcast with open chat and moderators.? If you look at TCDNMRAMEDIA, you can see some of the things we do as well as the Crossing Gate podcast.? If this is something you would like to do from time to time, I am happy to help "audio/visual engineer" for you.? It would be fun to do something like this to promote the NASG Convention.? Several folks are considering doing this to promote other Scale orientated gatherings.? Gatherings that focus on scale modelers without regard to flange or rail height.? That is not to say hating on the Flyer operators or collectors but they are doing something a bit different and I think it is more useful to focus on a tighter topic.? If someone would like to do a Flyer operator collector podcast, I would also help with that.Last evening, I had a guest from New York City stop by for a visit.? He is a N Scaler and he operates all over the NYC area.? He was suitable impressed with S Scale, it does not fit the space he has available but that is not unusual.?

Brooks Stover gave excellent points about the advantages of S scale, and those points are also on the NASG website. I don't know what state the NASG YouTube channel is in, but whatever videos I have posted to support the NASG and S scale can belong on that channel when it's ready. I just finished one on the History of EMD using as many S scale models as I could find to exemplify important locomotives in the history of the company. The point was to show that there is/was a wide range of EMD locomotives available in 1/64th?scale.

If podcasts are useful, I would volunteer to help there, too. I personally do not listen to them.

Guys,
I am not on a podcast. I listen to several in the mornings and always wish there was more guys being interviewed that model in S. There is never S manufacturers and just a hand full of S modelers over the years. Most of the time those S modelers seem to just repeat the talking points of which the NASG has come up with.?

I posted the question here asking others on this list what they might say if they were on a podcast with the hopes of having interesting S to read instead of those same old talking points. It is funny to me that there are just a few post so far. What is everyone else wanting to say if they were given a chance to shout it out to the world. Such as on a podcast.?

I am going to reach out to several of the podcast asking for more S content and if they would like I would speak to S scale or would suggest some others to speak to S also.?

BTW what is going on with the NASG YouTube? Maybe the NASG could do a monthly podcast.

S friends:?

There has been good run on the listed items except for the Firetruck, Flatbed trailer and the three vintage tractors, so I'll hold them for later!

Also remaing, is the Tru-Scale wooden roadbed that didn't stir any memories either.? I do remember that those products seemed like the Cadillac in track products--I bought and have recently used a couple of the switch blocks that I bought from Roger Nulton--I mounted the turnout on the base then inserted into it's new home.? I dug out some #6s then dropped in #8s with mimium disruption.

Next up to be listed 'might' be a? couple of AM E units (MKT+Fresco), some SHS, SP Black widows, with a good selection of structure kits.?

All prices are without shipping charges which we'll determine based on location, box size an weight!? We accept personal checks and PayPal.

Thanks guys!? I'll be "out" in more ways than usual, but my in box is working!

Re: hypothetical question with a real answer

Mike,

The NASG promotional literature lists five reasons to consider S.? I also reference these five attributes in the article about scale modeling in S today that will be in the November MODEL RAILROADER.

UNIQUENESS– Being a less utilized scale makes all S models and layouts unlike others in the more prevalent scales.
PHYSICAL PRESENCE– The larger physical size makes S models enjoyable even when viewed from a distance.? (Just 36% bigger in any dimension but 250% of the volume.)
LEVEL OF DETAIL– Smaller details can be included and still be resistant to breakage during handling and operation.
RELIABILITY – The increased mass and larger wheel-track contact area results in exceptional electrical reliability. ?
EASIER TO SEE & WORK ON – The bigger models are easier to see to work on and car numbers are easier to read during operations.
PHOTOGENIC– The larger size makes it easier to create great photos of S scale trains.

As for your presentation, I'd say you should talk about what YOU think is the most appealing aspects of modeling in S, not what others think.

What podcast and when?

Brooks Stover

Re: hypothetical question with a real answer

Well what attracted me to S was that it was good size for building structures especially scratchbuilt in. I had been In N which operated great but wasn't happy with my building results.
cheers

if you were invited to be on a podcast to speak about S-Scale, what is the number one topic of S Scale that you would try to drive home to a non-S Scal?

Hello Ed,

I'm not interested in buying. Wondering if you have photos of the interiors with the bodies removed. I have an RDC-1 that could use similar treatment.?

Re: small and large, cheap and outrages!

Bob, I might be interested in the SP C-30-1 caboose, if still available.? I already have one, but I think its the sloped cupola.? Will have to go to storage tomorrow and confirm.? Let me know if you still have it.

Have been reading posts for the last few months, finally joined.? Main interest is SP and short lines in California Central Valley 1955 to 1975.? That was my best train chasing years.

First up my doctor has postponed my visit, so the much needed Twighlight Sleep, they talk about is on hold!
However, some fine folks have taken advantage of my offers plus I left out two photos, so they're now attached!
The AB brake systems have been spoken for as has the Wilson Reefer and AAR flat.? The rest are still here!
Bob

I've got some medical work coming up but I do have some time to list a few more things looking for new homes:

2) Now I have some diecast things--out of box.? A Farmall/IH 40's-50's-60's era tractor; a much older tractor painted in John Deere colors, with the only label indicating kerosene on it's fuel tank?; then another John Deere tractor from the 40'-50-60's; then because these are really hot items I have a Mac pumper (Corigi) to cool things down!? They can all ride on a trailer as shown in the photo.? (I believe all the tractors and trailer are Ethl) $28.00

3) I also? have three items still in blister packs:? A fairly modern John Deere tractor with cab.? Item as released in 91'? Then a 1957 Dodge COE from M2--neat model--red line tires jewel signal lights!? Then I have a American Muscle Chrysler 300 with opening truck and hood!? $24.00

4) From Gold Coast Models is aC-30-1 (straight coupla) factory painted caboose with road number 308.? Test run a few feet? but super clean overall with box and foam in original excellent? condition.? With couplers.? With lots of brass made during this time--this won't be made like this again.? $225.00

5) A real oldie!? What seems like a full circle of Tru-Scale Wooden Milled roadbed.? Writing indicates it's radii is 36"? $12.00

8)? And last but not least and the outrages part!? A Sunset Models Challenger 4-6-6-4.? The outrages, is? this extremely reasonably price of $750.00? This model seems to run nicely, and by far exceedes the quality issues of Sunset's prior attempt with the Big Boy.? This model has really never been run any distance.?

Charles-

The spur gear on the axle has split -- most common likelyhood.? Some of these gears were made with a poor quality plastic.? The NASG site has a section on the replacement of the gear.

NWSL has a replacement -- part number on the NASG site.? ?

If you don't feel up to doing it yourself there are many who can do it for you.? I'd offer to help you but I'm completely covered up with house/life issues with little time to work on my own layout.?

If doing it yourself take care and note the location and placement of the small plastic shim that insures electrical continuity of the circuit tape that runs the length of the frame.? Also watch out for the spring-loaded pickups that collect power from the drivers.? Very easy to loose these during disassembly.? ?These are all shown in the Dispatch article linked below.?

Good luck.? ?
