The Perils of Open Houses (was: Re: [S-Scale] 2 minutes and I am good)
I have held open houses several times. I always have someone near the front door to welcome guests -- and make sure they don't "wander." Usually it's my spouse, but once, when my wife was out of town, I relied on a "designated housewife," the spouse of one of my operators. She worked out really well. ?She was a crossword puzzle nut, so she had fun things to do while sippjng Pepsi in my living room, and she really enjoyed meeting all the visitors from many parts of the western hemisphere. Footnote: I, like Bill Lane, sought a house with no furnace and a large clear heated space in the basement. My understanding spouse went along with this; she of course had other (non-conflicting) requirements. ?We lucked out. Dick Karnes sscale.org =============

scrap carpet in the mud, but that wasn't enough.? That bedroom

Re: Mexene Chili powder...
Not so fast Bob, you sent a b/w photo with no color information. It took years to track down what we guessed were the correct logo colors. But, we were happy with the results and at that time I do not believe it had been available in any other scale.

Re: Hoquat Sides
I'd like to find out who did the SOO Line express reefer sides that were contained in a S Scenery kit. As I mentioned a few days ago, they must have been dry transfers. I don't think Gene would have done those.? The lettering was so good, sharp and in gold leaf color.

A have a few of his sides left even after deciding that I could never build all of them, especially after finding out most of the advertising sides were outlawed after a ???certain time period! Besides SHS seems to have covered many of those sides in the meantime. And speaking of advertising sides and similar.? In the middle of SHS effort to have wooden reefers populate our layouts, I made a print of the ART reefer painted for Austex Chille and sent it to Don Thompson for consideration for a run of them.? Well, they made a run of them.? Later on I was approached by a couple of MP/ART lovers who asked permission to use the photo in a book.? That was about 5 years ago and I understand it's being released now.? Tony Thompson of Signature Press is the publisher and hopefully the print is in the book. Bob Werre PhotoTraxx Also forgot to mention Gene had previously done sides as Old Shanty long before I hooked up with him and began distributing his sides for him. If anyone has old Hoquat catalogs from the late 80’s there is a pretty complete list of all the Walp sides in there. Gene also did sides for Red Ball HO kits |

开云体育Pattie and I pretty much had the
opposite situation when we finally moved into a ground based
home.? We had bought a mobile home and lived nicely for about 6
years--payments were under $200 and I had part of a spare bedroom
for a workbench.?
When we began our search we also had been on Houston's Nov. tour for a couple of years.? So we kept an eye on things.? In our neck of the woods, rr space isn't the easiest thing to obtain.? Attic's are way too hot and basements are called swimming pools, so out-buildings, garages and home additions all beat spare bedrooms.? On tours we noticed that if you had to enter through the 'front' door you normally have a greeter/security guard doing that chore.? Most modelers are good honest people, but a few are not and face it our tour is open to anybody who might see your layout on a list.? One layout that we visited was a nice N scale layout in a back bedroom with a sliding patio door for entrance.? That bedroom carpet had become a dark brown sponge by the time we entered.? Wife said--no way!? When it came down to actually looking for a home the country was in the middle of high mortgage rates so having to move fairly far away for anything reasonable was normal.? We also liked the idea of a fireplace, gas heat and hopefully a detached garage that I could add on to.? We turned out with all electric appliances, no fireplace, and a attached garage, but we were able to assume two prior "reasonable" notes? So we made a pact where I could add on a RR room above my garage and Pattie could get a larger kitchen!? We both got our wishes eventually but the RR room could be 4 ft longer and the wife's kitchen could be built a bit larger too!? And probably most of all, we haven't been flooded out.? Part of that is prayer, luck and slightly higher ground.? We still have thousands of formally "nicer" homes that need to be raised about 9' in some areas or torn down.? Visitors enter through a dedicated entrance where I can still haul up a 4 x 8 sheet up the stairwell, my old smelly dog can visit and all kinds of friends can visit without having to have folks wander through the house.? I'll probably be open for our 5 week-long tour this November.? Bob Werre

Hi Bill -- Never considered layout tours as a condition of buying the house.? ?The train room option was a big selling point, of course.? That it is up 17 steps is just a benefit -- some of the little exercise I going up and down all the steps along with crawling under the layout to get into the middle (this is avoidable as there are drop bridges that open the "gate," but to me it is just another bit of exercise which the doc encourages).? ?Although the landing could probably hold 10 persons, the layout room is only good for a few at a time.? ?This has NEVER been a problem since there are so few guys up here who would visit as a group.? The stairs alone limit a large percentage of the persons in this area from coming, as about 50% are senior citizens and many are unable to climb stairs.? ?All of this is OK, as I am building the railroad for me, although it will keep three of four persons busy someday, maybe...? A couple of pictures attached.? You will note that the layout is in disarray.? ?Not that Bill Lane has goaded me into rail painting and ballasting, but a request from Bill Pyper, the "Dispatch" editor, has.? ?I still have much of the latest narrow gauge additions that need paint on the rails, but everything else is done.? Ballasting is also progressing along with scenery in the areas that are getting ballast.? Things have moved ahead much faster this year than in the previous several years, finally.? ? 2 minutes and I am good
开云体育Since I am having my first open house tour soon I have been telling the true story about seeing my house for the first time. It is a small ranch just less than 1000 sq ft. A ranch was mandatory for me. ? My house has a few very unique things. The best part is not one inch of the steps to my basement are actually IN my basement. The last step down is the basement floor. There is a door to the outside right at the top of these steps. ? We walked in to what is the TV room. 15 seconds later I saw the steps to the basement. I go down and checked it out. It was much smaller than dream basement I imagined, but good enough. The heater was in the center and -SCORE- a 1/2 bath in the corner. ? Less than a minute later I am back upstairs, and thought of the layout tour possibilities of not having anyone wander around my house hits me. So I am in the house for truly less than 2 minutes. ? "I am good. Let’s get it" ? "Don't you want to see the rest of the house?" ? "Well I guess. If she likes it we are good." ? ? That is just how it went down. Layout tour possibilities sold the house to me. You won't ever see that as a real estate amenity. ? ? Thank You, ? See my layout progress at:

Loco is Beeuutiful and the tender is coming along -- "well begun is half done" to quote Mary Poppins. You keep this up and I will be moved to recommence the NKP, W&LE and C&O berks that are finished up to the point of the boiler and cab. I determined to do the not so fun stuff first -- but then you lose motivation. Also layouts are where you run this stuff and so finally you have to build the layout.? Decisions, decisions.? I need to retire!? Thanks for sharing. Chris Rooney
