Andre convinced me to do this expensive parts cobble but it has been 5 years since I stalled. ? I actually just got another SHS SW1 drive cheap that included a brass SW1 hood for the parts. My 2 most completed S12 locos are sitting right here waiting for my motivation.

?

I work 1 mile “from the land of the Baldwins” ?SMS railroad runs Baldwins including a S12 almost every day.

The other shoe will drop when you realize you'll need to touch up that nice paint job when you've added necessary details.

Got my new American Models Baldwin S12 today. I had requested a undecorated model and inquired if they would paint it black. The model was painted black by AM. Now let me say this, I am a brass steam pro painter and to have someone else paint one of my models was really a second though.?
?
The paint job they did on this loco shell is grade A. Perfect finish, no dirt, drips or runs. Evenly covered and not over covered along with the finish being cured.? I am so impressed with this factory paint job that I recommend to all of you that if you want colored unlettered rolling stock give them a call. And by the way it did not take much longer for me to get the loco than if they would not have painted it.?
?
The model it self runs so smooth on address 0 on a Digitrax layout. Yes, the darn LED is blue but it will be going away soon when I get the Soundtraxx Baldwin decoder. In the mean time I am going to start on Missouri Pacific diesel switcher decals.?
?
The brass hand rails cost me a little more than I thought they would have cost but they are very sharp.? I have no regrets, they are well worth the extra cost. I know they will look good and hold up during my man handling of the loco in the future. I recommend them also.
?
A was pleasantly surprise to find the Kadee 802 in with the model. I have been really unhappy with the fact that Kadee 802 couplers have doubled in cost in just the last decade.

Hi Mike:
?
Read with interest your experiences with AM. It was my experiences back during the years I was into scale S that AM was a quality operation.
?
Are you planning on addressing the issue with the AAR trucks they come equipped with?
?
When I fizzled out with scale S, I just about had an AM S-12 modded into a DS-4-4-1000. (See pic.)
?
When I tossed in the towel on S, I think I sold that Gale? Can't remember.
?
Anyway, looking forward to seeing your Mop Baldwin switcher?take shape.

My S 12 was acquired when I was still shooting photos for Ron and it too arrived black but that was just an unpainted model with some basic railings in plastic.? It also had the ball- point spring drives inside.? I soon went to work on the Alco type truck side-frames.? I thought that I might change the wheelbase to more closely match what it was supposed to.? So I tried to compromise the measurements a bit.? I probably would have worked 'somewhat' but I lost interest, another modeler wanted it so it left to a new forever home!

Fast forward, it's back with me again.? I also recently ordered the railings--thought they were sort of expensive, but to my surprise they were brass== a great upgrade that I didn't mind paying extra for.?

I installed a double used Soundtrax decoder(LC I think).? It actually has the same features of the first generation of the SHS sound module, but in a much smaller package.? It' a EMD sound, but with the wrong trucks, it'll be okay till?? For what I paid for it, adding a new upgraded $$$ sound package wasn't economical for a localized switcher==especially a SOO Line Baldwin!? I'll just tell guests that is was re-motored really early in it's life!

Re: On topic

I was not offended, Jace. And I agree with Rich that we might all be just a bit too sensitive. This a community and one that's pretty effective at maintaining polite discourse. If anyone has strayed a bit from strictly S subjects, it hasn't been very far or for very long.?

At least lately I have been a major offender in posting other than purely S scale matters; if that has offended anyone, I apologize.? Some other lists are very (VERY) rigid about nothing off the stated purpose of the list.? Just as when S scalers socialize with each other at shows and conventions they don't ONLY converse on model railroading, so I've felt free to just chat with members I know only through the list.??
I have posted some of the S scale projects I've worked on in the past, but I am one of those who (increasingly with age) can go days without measurable progress on clearing my workbench.? A few of the lists I've joined seem to have become moribund with infrequent activity, so I wonder if in the absence of solid S scale information it is too wrong to just oil the contacts among us?

Re: On topic

Far too many utterly miserable trips on Amtrak since its creation to want to ride it again. Padded schedules. Or 18 hours late. Or septic tanks full and the entire car filled with the smell. Too many trips finished by Greyhound.
?
We all know that Amtrak is underfunded and perpetually disregarded by the freight railroads despite the law requiring otherwise. But even if the railroad industry were more conscientious toward Amtrak, they no longer have the physical plant or the employees to effect it.?
?
Nevertheless, if someone wants to model it, have away! It's your railroad after all.?

I hand laid about 4' of #83 rail for one of my caboose tracks...it's only that long ie. 2 cabooses so that's a very short story!?

I had lunch with a long time friend who is in his low "80s" who is also thinking about adding a tiny 0n18 RR using. 3D printed 0n30 bodies (he prints much of his own rolling stock and structures) mated with N chassis--all for a mining RR. This will set next to his traditional Lionel layout with his "real" 0n30 in the next room.? All these attempts are individual setups.

However, at the moment, I think many of us are concerned about the future of our scale, our hobby, our friends leaving and our ability to stay financially solvent (BBB element here), whether relocating, making a retirement nest or just hanging on!
?

If we're talking about a dream. (what S needs now!)..try the latest in Amtrak power and cars.? and can Amtrak survive in the next few years.? Then on to politics!? Then more dogs and cats--to keep smiling for a bit!

Aren't we being a little over sensitive? Retirement and relocation both have good and bad aspects for one's interest with the hobby?.

Re: On topic

We need to teach people how to "hide" topics they don't want to see. I do it all the time.

So, if you don't know how, this is what you do:

1. Scroll down to the bottom of any message.
2. Find and click on "Mute This Topic" link.
3. Confirm that you want to mute.

Boom, you will no longer get any messages from that thread. You could still see them online if you go there to read messages. I believe this still works even in digest mode, but you will have to view the thread online instead.
