FW: Message from the RustCrew

Phil Connor

Some observations from a guy who has been on the list since May 2002
(that would be me).

It is pretty hard to differentiate between the artist and the 'art' in
any form that artistic expression may take.

Most people are walking, talking contradictions (to quote a Rhodes
scholar) and I would suggest that Mr. Young has more of these
contradictions than most artists.

I completely focus on the man's music and leave him to live his life as
he chooses - as I do mine.

I would never think of judging this man, or any person, on the tip of
the iceberg that we see - which before we see 'it', is strained through
other individuals and their organisations bias's (spelling?).

When the discussion of art is overcome by discussion, and observation,
of the artist, we have moved to a whole different area of discourse -
one that will always be contentious and raise the hackles of ardent
fans.

If you want to challenge the artist on 'a' issue or a 'number' of
issues, I think it needs to be done in fora that are a lot different
than mailing lists such as this one.

Comments here will only incite a number of posts and result in a flame
war - nothing else changes - it seems to me the ardent posters would
want real change on the part of the artist.

If you take the artist on where he lives and works - in this case
through the Farm Aid organisation, through his own management company,
through his business associates and associations you may get some
attention and you may promote real change in thinking - if you have a
rationale basis for your thesis (theses).

Doing it on this list, doesn't get the artists attention and just
incites some ardent followers, who love the man's art. If that is the
real objective of the posts, then that would evidence itself in a
continued criticism of the artist in this forum, and no evidence of any
parallel efforts in other media.

I think is extremely difficult (and even more contentious) to change
others' opinions of the artist by attacking the artist on his 'home
field' (so to speak), the 'home crowd' assumes you are 'trying to stir
the pot' and 'are looking for trouble'.

Given the right circumstances and the proper medium, you might be able
to change the way the artist thinks, and therefore, the way people think
about that artist, and that will have an affect (and maybe an effect)
here.

I think this list is more about the art - and a great list it is -
although sometimes more NNC chat than about the art - but then again,
people gathered together in a common interest can digress for a while,
can't they?

Take care,

Phil

I have nothing against Neil knocking his balls around and I certainly
couldn't care less how he swings his club. Just have to wonder how he
marries this hobby with his fight against the sins of the factory farm.
Pesticide runoff near golf courses runs pretty neck to neck with the
worst of the farm offenders.
