This current side discussion of diversity of musical
tastes got me to wondering... When I listen to music
it is for the words, the imagery those words create,
and the feelings and emotions those words stir inside
of me. That is basically why I'm a Neil fan. I love
the words he writes, the images those words create and
the feelings I have when I listen to his music...My
husband (THE King Crimson and other such musical
interests fan) listens to the notes and the sounds.
He could care less if there were words and he has no
emotional reaction to music. It's all just technical.
Comments or shared similarities anyone?
Nice question, T. For me, it's definitely both. I think
that a lot of it depends on how well I understand the lyrics.
I have never been very good at deciphering them, but of course,
that depends on how's singing them! For Neil it's both. He
writes such great lyrics and melodies. Different bands appeal
to me for different reasons. I love Grand Funk RR, for example,
but their lyrics have never struck me as anything close to
brilliant. I am in the minority here but I wish all albums,
as I still call them, came with the lyrics printed. It's really
hard for me to tell what certain bands are singing a lot of the
time. A band like Belle and Sebastian displays everything that
makes me think of a great band: singing, lyrics, melodies,
harmonies, their playing, etc. I can't imagine not caring at
all what is being sung, though; but...as with everything else,
different strokes for different folks.
