Re: Bluetooth problems AA-55 Zoom

Hi Alex,

Like Doug, I downloaded the 1.1.5 version of AS 2 on my Win 10 laptop. It installs fine. But even using the suggested modifications of the BT settings here () regarding the default ingoing/outgoing BT com ports, I now cannot get my AA-55 Zoom BT to successfully connect to AS 2. It shows being paired in my BT manager in Win 10 but AS 2 does not connect whether under Auto or Manual with the Outgoing com port selected. So, I'm stuck regarding BT connections it seems. USB works fine.

Alex,

Here is what I used for my tests:

  1. ?I installed the new firmware version 1.25 on my AA-55.
  2. There is a new app for Android on the Google Play store (Dec. 4 update)? so I updated my version on my Android tablet.
  3. RigExpert posted a new version of AntScope 1.1.5 in the Files section of this group. I removed the old version and installed this program.
This is what I have found so far:
?
Android Tablet
?
Good news
  • I transferred multiple 500 point sweeps and never had a single error. The app connects easily and does not freeze or lock up.??
Bad news
  • The? transfer time is now double what it used to be. Before it took 19 seconds for 500 points and now it takes 39 seconds. A 100 point sweep is about 8 seconds or so.
  • Terminating the android app in the middle of a sweep sometimes causes the AA-55 will "lock up" and no longer respond to keypad commands.? The only way to get it back is to remove and reinstall the batteries.?
Windows 8.1 PC

Good news
  • After connecting to the AA-55 I could now transfer 500 points without any errors and no spinning of the circle at the end.?
  • Continuous sweeping now works without data dropouts even for long 500 point transfers
Bad news
  • It? can take up to 8 seconds? sometimes to connect to the AA-55 and display that in the title bar.
  • The? transfer time is now double what it used to be. It? now it takes 45 seconds for a 500 point sweep. A 100 point sweep is about 9 seconds or so.
  • If you don't do a sweep within 10 seconds after connecting Antscope 2 to the AA-55 you cannot do a sweep.? The circle keeps spinning and nothing is transferred.? You? have to exit Antscope 2 and power off/power on the AA-55 to get it started again.?
  • The other thing I found is that the AA-55 screen is blanked out? during Bluetooth transfers.? I think this is done to save battery power. Unfortunately there is a new bug.? If you terminate Antscope 2 in the middle of? a sweep or you have a program crash the AA-55 Zoom sometimes lock ups and the keypad no longer works.? You have to take out the batteries to get it working again.
Other bugs
  • In the settings the selection of ITU region 1,2 or 3 is no longer there.? It is just a blank button that does nothing.
?
Summary
?
There are still some issues with the firmware as described above (slow transfers, lockup). AntScope 2 has some timing problems.? I have some experience in Bluetooth protocol analysis and have an idea why the transfer is slow and can share them with RigExpert if they are interested.?

Important. For the AA-55 Zoom and Stick 230 be sure to update the firmware to latest.

A test version of AntScope2 for PC will be available a little later.
It is also worth noting that analyzers with a Bluetooth module with the BLE protocol (Bluetooth Low Energy) at the moment cannot be connected to a PC with AntScope2 via Bluetooth. This opportunity will be implemented after the end of the planned work with the Bluetooth protocol.

Doug VE7DXK and I have been comparing notes. I'm having similar problems with my AA-55 Zoom BT with USB vs BT connections when using Antscope 2. I used the 1.1.14 version that Alex posted the link for in this Group. I just installed an Alpha Delta EE 40-10M Fan Dipole. Attached are two SWR sweeps in PNG format and two CSV files of the data. One pair is for a USB connection while the other is for a BT connection. Same antenna. All using a Win 10 x64 laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T420s) with the latest Win updates. I've attached screenshots of the Bluetooth installation (it's BT 3.0). The AA-55 was two inches from the laptop for the BT sweep.

My results confirm Doug's in the sense that the USB sweep returns the 300 data points (actually 302!) while the BT returns fewer than the 300 spec (291). Now, 9 fewer points may not seem like much when we're sampling across a broad RF spectrum. But it does confirm that the BT connection is not behaving as reliably as the USB connection for Antscope 2. For a sweep that needs a more precise and not interpolated representation, this can be a problem. In any case, I'd ask Alex (or RigExpert in general) to assess the problem that Doug originally reported and that I've now confirmed. If there are others who can post with their own data, that would be great.

I've added the details on the BT driver in this particular setup so as to assist RigExpert in evaluating how they are communicating from their BT stack to clients.

Love both my AA-55 and my 230 Stick...and look forward to getting the BT connections to both working reliably. And on all platforms, LOL!

Dear Doug,

Yes, firmware version 1.25 was released for the AA-55 Zoom.

FW uploaded to the server and available for updating via FlashTool.
Just in case, a static link to the file:

Re: Bluetooth problems AA-55 Zoom

Thank you Frank Howell for posting a report on your problems with the AA-55 Zoom Bluetooth.

We now know that data is being dropped on a Bluetooth connection on your Windows 10 PC as well as on my Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers and my Android laptop tablet.

It is not the Antscope2 application for Windows or Android that is causing the problem.? It also drops characters if you use a terminal program like Putty or TeraTerm and send ASCII commands like?fqXXXXXXXXX,?swXXXXXXXXX and?frxNNNN.??

Therefore the problem must be with the Bluetooth hardware module or the firmware in the AA-55 Zoom.

I had an email from RigExpert on Nov. 24 saying they were looking into the problem and hoped to have a solution in 1 to 2 weeks.? I have not heard anything since then but hope that they find a solution soon.

I’ve installed version 1.1.4 and it does identify the 230 Stick and Version 1.1.4, does a sweep as expected. It will retrieve a screenshot from the AA as per the menu and will Export as CSV the Freq, R and L as a test case to verify that it’s getting data from the 230 Stick. I checked the contents and the CSV file has full integrity.?

However, when I execute the tab to extract the data from the AA, it opens a dialog box (shown attached) and appears to not have any retrieved data elements. Should it? I wait for 30 or so seconds without any listing. There’s an ok box which just closes this dialog. The ReadandSaveAll button will bring up another dialog box, “Reading data”. It will appear to be reading data from the device but suddenly crash AS2.
