Direwolf - Version 1.7 - October 2023
Just a heads up for you AX.25 packet users, Direwolf v1.7 has been finally moved to an official release. --David KI6ZHD -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [wb2osz/direwolf] Release 1.7 - Version 1.7 - October 2023 Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2023 08:25:39 -0700 From: wb2osz <notifications@...> Reply-To: wb2osz/direwolf <noreply@...> To: wb2osz/direwolf <direwolf@...> CC: Subscribed <subscribed@...> Version 1.7 - October 2023 Repository: wb2osz/direwolf · Tag: 1.7 · Commit: de293a1 · Released by: wb2osz New Documentation: Additional documentation location to slow down growth of main repository. https://github.com/wb2osz/dire wolf-doc . These are more oriented toward achieving a goal and understanding, as opposed to the User Guide which describes the functionality. APRS Digipeaters Internal Packet Routing Radio Interface Guide Successful IGate Operation Understanding APRS Packets New Features: New ICHANNEL configuration option to map a KISS client application channel to APRS-IS. Packets from APRS -IS will be presented to client applications as the specified channel. Packets sent, by client application s, to that channel will go to APRS-IS rather than a radio channel. Details in Internal-Packet-Routing. pdf. New variable speed option for gen_packets. For example, "-v 5,0.1" would generate packets from 5% too s low to 5% too fast with increments of 0.1. Some implementations might have imprecise timing. Use this to test how well TNCs tolerate sloppy timing. Improved Layer 2 Protocol (IL2P). Com patible with Nino TNC for 1200 and 9600 bps. Use "-I 1" on command line to enable transmit for first chan nel. For more general case, add to config file (simplified version, see User Guide for more details): After: "CHANNEL 1" (or other channel) Add: "IL2PTX 1" Limited support for CM108/CM119 GPIO PTT on Windows. Dire Wolf now advertises itself using DNS Service Discovery. This allows suitable APRS / Packet Radio a pplications to find a network KISS TNC without knowing the IP address or TCP port. Thanks to Hessu for providing this. Currently available only for Linux and Mac OSX. [Read all about it here.](https://github .com/hessu/aprs-specs/blob/master/TCP-KISS-DNS-SD.md) The transmit calibration tone (-x) command line option now accepts a radio channel number and/or a singl e letter mode: a = alternate tones, m = mark tone, s = space tone, p = PTT only no sound. The BEACON configuration now recognizes the SOURCE= option. This replaces the AX.25 source address rath er than using the MYCALL value for the channel. This is useful for sending more than 5 analog telemetry c hannels. Use two, or more, source addresses with up to 5 analog channels each. For more flexibility, the FX.25 transmit property can now be set individually by channel, rather than ha ving a global setting for all channels. The -X on the command line applies only to channel 0. For other channels you need to add a new line to the configuration file. You can specify a specific number of parit y bytes (16, 32, 64) or 1 to choose automatically based on packet size. After: "CHANNEL 1" (or other channel) Add: "FX25TX 1" (or 16 or 32 or 64) Bugs Fixed: The t/m packet filter incorrectly included bulletins. It now allows only "messages" to specific station s. Use of t/m is discouraged. i/180 is the preferred filter for messages to users recently heard locally . Packet filtering now skips over any third party header before classifying packet types. Fixed build for Alpine Linux. Notes: The Windows binary distribution now uses gcc (MinGW) version 11.3.0. The Windows version is built for both 32 and 64 bit operating systems. Use the 64 bit version if possible; it runs considerably faster. — This release has 4 assets: direwolf-1.7.0-2260df1_i686.zip direwolf-1.7.0-9807304_x86_64.zip Source code (zip) Source code (tar.gz) Visit the release page to download them. — You are receiving this because you are watching this repository. HAMRS RPI 64 bookworm 2
Anyone have HAMRS running on a RPI 400, RPI4 with 4gig of memory running 64 bit bookworm OS? I'm trying to put together an RPI portable station with my G90 and a Magloop antenna. Got WSJT, FLRIG, all is working well except for a logging program I can feel comfortable with. I have CQRLOG installed but it's not working with FLRIG or WSJTX under bookworm. I'm lstill ooking for logging software.Thanks... 73 Jeff kb2m

RASPBERRY-PI SC1166: RPi5 M.2 HAT 3
If you'd like to add an M.2 NVMe SSD to your RPi5, you can order one here: RASPBERRY-PI SC1166 RPI 5 M.2 HAT https://www.newark.com/raspberry-pi/sc1166/rpi-5-m-2-hat/dp/82AK3964 0 In stock Non-Cancelable / Non Returnable Price for each: $37.63 ----- https://www.tomshardware.com/news/raspberry-pi-5-nvme-boot Sneak Peek at Booting Raspberry Pi 5 From an NVMe SSD By Ash Hill published 2 days ago Place your bets for the Pi bootup race. Raspberry Pi (Image credit: Jeff Geerling) One spec on the Raspberry Pi 5 that the community is eagerly buzzing about is the new PCIe port. This enables compatibility with a variety of devices, most notably SSD support. Today, we’re taking a look at maker Jeff Geerling and his experience with booting the Pi 5 using an NVMe SSD. Geerling was given access to a PCIe breakout board by the Raspberry Pi engineering team, but there will be an M.2 HAT addon coming in 2024. The addon will bring an M.2 connection for a 2242 NVMe SSD. There are multiple benefits to using an SSD with the Pi 5. One of the most obvious benefits is the performance boost you get using an SSD over a microSD card. Being able to access data quickly is a game changer if you’re using your Pi to access media on the regular. But if you want to take things further, booting the Pi off an SSD allows the entire operating system to perform with the speed of an SSD rather than just the SD card. Setting up the Pi to boot off an NVMe SSD is simple and Jeff provides lots of details explaining how to make it work. The only way you can use the SSD to specifically boot is to enable the function first. This can be done by adjusting the boot order configuration file on the Pi. Once it’s set to point to the SSD, the Pi will check it first when booting and run the OS if it’s installed. Raspberry Pi (Image credit: Jeff Geerling) The external PCIe port also needs to be manually enabled. With it enabled and the boot device order set properly, it’s possible to boot from the SSD. You will need a valid partition, though, and the Raspberry Pi Imager is only set up to flash microSD cards. To set up the SSD with Raspberry Pi OS, you will need to flash the OS onto a microSD card. At this point, you can clone the boot volume off microSD card and copy the data over to the SSD. As long as the SSD is connected directly to the PCIe port, it will boot. That said, Geerling was unable to boot the Pi from an SSD if it was connected behind a bridge or switch. It's also worth keeping in mind that you won't get the full potential speed of most SSDs when connecting to the Pi 5, as there is just a single PCIe 2.0 lane available. In theory, that gives you about 500MBps of PCIe bandwidth. So you're going to top out at roughly the performance of a fast SATA SSD. To get a closer look at this Raspberry Pi project in action, check out the full post shared by Jeff to his blog. If this project is up your alley, you should be sure to follow Jeff Geerling for more cool Pi projects as well as any future creations. ------ https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2023/nvme-ssd-boot-raspberry-pi-5 NVMe SSD boot with the Raspberry Pi 5 October 21, 2023 Pi 5 PCIe NVMe Kioxia XG8 SSD In my video about the brand new Raspberry Pi 5, I mentioned the new external PCIe port makes it possible to boot the standard Pi 5 model B directly off NVMe storage—an option which is much faster and more reliable than standard microSD storage (even with industrial-rated cards!). Enabling NVMe boot is pretty easy, you add a line to /boot/config.txt, modify the BOOT_ORDER in the bootloader configuration, and reboot! Of course, you'll also need to get Pi OS onto the NVMe, and there are a few ways to do that—I'll walk you through my favorite method below. Note: Raspberry Pi announced they are developing an official Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT, but there is no word on a launch date for it yet. I am also tracking other PCIe HATs for Raspberry Pi 5 here. Enable the external PCI Express port First, enable the external PCIe port on the Raspberry Pi 5. Edit /boot/config.txt and add the following at the bottom: # Add to bottom of /b

64bit Debian Bookworm and Web Browser Issues 5 #software #cpu #pi #raspberrypi
I recently decided to update the OS in a Raspberry Pi 4, and the newer versions of YAAC, Direwolf and others. I used the Raspberry Pi Imager app to load the newest 64bit Debian Bookworm and the Pi Desktop. After loading I did all the usual things changing settings for the U.S. and so on. Then I brought up the Chromium Web Browser, after about a minute it froze and would do nothing more. I rebooted the Pi and tried again and again and again it happened every time, and then I tried using Firefox ... same result. I never got around to loading anything on the Pi, so nothing could be causing the issue from another application. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what did you do to fix it?

WSJTX no audio
I'm building a RPI 400 portable system for POTA ops. I'm using a DigiRig setup to connect the PI to my G90. I installed the latest 64 bit version of Debian 12, and got FLRig and with some difficulty WSJTX installed and running. Only issue is I have no audio to WSJTX. When I try to configure the audio in WSJTX the Soundcard selection for both input and output are grayed out. I've already installed pulseAudio and still don't have anything showing up as a sound selection on WSJTX. I do notice that I see on the microphone pot on the volume control panel the levels fluctuate while listening to the G90 rxing FT8 audio, you can see the level's drop between FT8 scans and come back up again. So it appears that the PI is processing audio from the G90, but it's just not getting to the software I'm trying to run. The hardware and software setup works fine with an older ver of 32 bit Debian 11. Any suggestions? Thanks... 73 Jeff kb2m

WSJTX main window won't reposition on screen 3
I'm having an issue with the main WSJTX window most of the time won't allow to be repositioned on the screen of a raspberry PI 4 with an 18.5 inch monitor. The smaller WSJTX waterfall window will always reposition , along with any other windows opened on the desktop. It seems odd that the main WSJTX window is the only one that has this behavior. Its also odd that it doesn't happen all the time. Anyone have a fix for this problem. No answer at the WSJT group. Thanks 73 Jeff kb2m

How to Copy a Bootable SD card on a Mac 11
Does anyone know of a way to copy a bootable SD card on a Mac? I've tried Balena Etcher, the Raspberry Pi Imager and Apple Pie Baker. I copy from a known-good SD card to a file, but when I copy back to a new SD card, the resulting image won't boot on a Pi. It takes an hour for me to rebuild Direwolf/Direwatch from scratch, so I'd really like to be able to burn completed images to a new card.

TGIF connection problem
Hello all. I have a homebuilt hotspot running Pi-star. My radio is an Anytone 878. The radio works fine on my home hotspot. I have a second hotspot I built just for TGIF. The second one is on a different frequency, different ESSID and my ID number with (08) after. ALL my hotspots work fine except this one. I can connect to TGIF but, the hotspot is deaf to my radio. I have checked everything I can think of and still no result. I even tried different hats and Pi-star images. As far as I can think, all my settings are correct. What the heck am i missing? ANY help would be appreciated. Can't remote in to RPI 7
I am trying to update RealVNC using putty, however, I don't recall the password! For some reason I can get into RPI through the viewer on the pc since it must remember the password, however on the mac the viewer requires the password. How can I change the password within the pi? That way I will write it down and avoid these problems? Don - kx9q

Raspberry Pi 3+B and TNC install....... Problems 10
HI! Due a defective SD Card I had to re-install everything from scratch....... But after a couple of days of struggling with the TNC, I have yet to get it to work. I have read pretty much all the tutorial under the sun, and yet still no success.... Where does someone start or looks when everything fails. Raspeberry Pi 3+B with TNC All the latest sorftware as of 08-30-2023, no update are available. Reinstalled to OS about 6 times so far and tried different approaches. Is there a 2023 updated tutorial on enabling the TNC on the raspberry PI? So far, from what I understood is that you need to enable the serial port and disable serial login modify the config.txt with the 3 lines that's need to be added and also the cmdline.txt file Verify the the TNC with an oscillating scope and meter, the tnc is good. So any help or insight would be great!

Ham Clock on RPI 1B 8
Hello everyone. I have a couple of Raspberry Pi's 1 Model B just sitting around in a box not doing anything. I was wondering if it would be possible to use one to make a Ham Clock. I have not made a ham clock before and I'm not really sure what all it needs so I figured that it wouldn't cost me anything to ask. The Model 1B isn't much compared to the RPI4 but I have 2 of them and that are not being used and it would be nice to find a good ham radio use for them. Thank you Aaron

Raspberry pi & TNC-Pi9k running aprx 13
HI! Here is my setup that I’m working on at the moment and really struggling with the decoding of beacon. Raspberry Pi with TNC-Pi9k installed and a Baofeng UV5R radio for broadcast and listening with DIY cable. So far I’m sucessful with transmitting a beacon, but decoding what is coming in is failure so far, I decode one in 2000 randomly. The radio receives, the tnc board light up when receiving, but the nothing in the aprs software (aprx). Played with radio volume, played with the rx setting, but no avail so far, anyone with some pointers would be great.
