Progress? (Long) 3
Hi All! Just a few lines to tell you what I'm up to. Having mixed results with my Raspberry Pi. A colleague helped me to load my OS insto a 4Gb SD-HC card. I was having problems because the card slot in my laptop was only good for SD, not SD-HC. Once we'd sorted that out and used an external card reader/writer the OS went in OK. Andrew then told me that we should connect it to the Internet before powering it for the first time. So, with everything connected (composite video monitor to the phono socket) we fired it up and it worked! Andrew went through the initial set-up, downloaded any available updates and made it go to the desktop every time it's switched on. So far, so good! Back at home I tried using it with the HDMI input on our oldish LCD TV. It isn't Full HD and the text at start-up is incredibly small and hard to read. When the desktop appears the icons are small, too. Connecting the same TV via the phono socket the text and icons are a reasonable size, but the bottom of the picture is lost ("off the screen"). This makes playing some of the Python games impossible. I was able to browse the web, though. I've also downloaded Geany, Python and Xterm following the instructions on a YouTube tutorial. Yesterday (Andrew on holiday) I decided to load the OS into an 8Gb card I had spare. That went OK. Last night I went through the same set-up procedure but didn't want it to go automatically to the desktop. I downloaded Geany, Python and Xterm again (so the Internet connection is working). After doing this I found it was asking for a password, and I hadn't set one. Now I'm locked out of it and I think I'll have to reload the OS. Going back to the previous card, I find I can't access the Internet with it (not found). Grrrr.... I've ordered an HDMI to VGA converter which I hope will give me a good, complete picture on my PC's monitor. It cost more than the Pi so it had better work! I've also ordered ten 26-way IDC sockets, five 26-way box headers and 100 feet of 26-way ribbon cable so when I know what I'm doing I'll be able to try interfacing the Pi to something - 100 feet away. No, I'll make a batch of leads for myself and others to play with. I'll let you know when I make any more "progress". 73, John G4EDX Nottingham, England

Steve here, Use to run an AX25 mailbox sometime ago for many years (GB7RUG), and I might bring this back to online status, access via just the internet for starters, if I could run this all on a PI? So really I am appealing to Paula PZT and John BPQ to write some stuff for the PI to support the application. I would also like the software to be user friendly, not hours of trawling through to make it all work! Yes, I am getting a bit older these days and don't think as quick as I did when we ran these FBB based systems 15 years or so ago. Have not invested in any units yet, as I am a bit confused what main version of Linux is going to be the main supported one for Amateur Radio operation etc? I guess thought seeing that CPC/Farnell now have stock I will be buying a couple of units to play with during this Winter. I also have interest in using the PI with WSPR and PSK31, and driving a few rigs like the FT2000 etc, so plenty for folk to go at and get it over onto the PI system. 73 Steve G1KQH

pi for packet radio
The standard rasbian distribution now includes the ax.25 and netrom modules. You no longer need a special kernel. Yesterday I created a new image from http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/images/raspbian/2012-08-16-wheezy-raspbian/2012-08-16-wheezy-raspbian.zip, ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, and the new Kernal (3.2.27) had all the packet modules. 73 John G8BPQ

raspberry pi for packet radio 6
Hello all, I have a raspberry pi and I want to use it for making a packet radio server. I have think to use jnos2 and I want to connect it with my mfj-1270c tnc. This one have a ttl port on the back, can I connect it directly to the GPIO port of the raspberry pi? Other question, if I try to use a usb to serial adaptor when I attach the port an arror says "protocol error", don't know if it's because jnos don't like usb serial port. Any clue? Hi, I am Andy G0SFJ, have a Pi - computing isn't really my line, wasn't too impressed by the Pi really, and am now looking at using it for ham radio applications only: * tnc / aprs *cw keyer *gpredict (could not load it!) * sound card and then some modulation/demod. I think it is underpowered and I found the Composite video unreadable on a small tv set when I was messing around with Python, so am now going to use DVI. BTW there are free Python courses at Coursera and elsewhere. Also I hope to use a wireless access point from D-Link. I am afraid I get lost with Lunix-speak and I hope towards an easy step-by-step soluton to installing these applications. I have also just bought an rs232 interface off ebay (For the tnc) and understand that the vendor is interested in a top-ten of ham radio pcb add-ons. All in all I don't think I'll be contributing much, but reading and hopefully learning...and asking for help sometimes! 73 de andy g0sfj

Adafruit's own linux flavor Occidentalis 14
Adafruit has a altered version of wheezy, called occidentalis ( latin for black raspberry). It gives wifi dongle drivers, etc and scripts to use i2c and other hardware, sensor devices that can connect to her selection of raspberrry pi sheilds and accesories. Check them out at Adafruit.com. Pretty neat site.

HDMI 2
I am barely educated in linux! Could you please tell me how to summon up the configuration file and then how to edit and save the changes? sorry about the elementary nature of the question! I can see the terminal through the composite video and now have a hdmi to dvi cable and monitor. andy g0sfj

SDR
I just ordered a Raspberry PI from Newark and it is on its way. I would like to use it as a back end to my UHFSDR. I know I will need a USB soundcard. I plan on using the I2C pins to control the Si570 and some GPIO for filter selection and PTT. Anyone got an SDR program working. My ultimate plan would be to make the UHFSDR/Raspberry combo a stand alone transceiver. Dave - WB6DHW <http://wb6dhw.com>

Hello, This email message is a notification to let you know that a file has been uploaded to the Files area of the Raspberry_Pi_4-Ham_RADIO group. I have turned on Moderation for all member posts. No offense to anyone. I just want better control over these types of unintentional and all intentional spammer posts.. I get notficiations on my CellPhone, I can quickly reply too.. So there should not be a long delay between your writing a post and it apearing here.. Unless its while I am sleeping... Thus my request below for moderators.. Many Thanks.. I am open to sugestions that others may have tried.. :) I know other groups have went dead due to spam and I just want to nip it before it can gain control of our group. wifo support
I found this on the pi site today. I haven't tried it, but am running a RTL8188 CUS based dongle, installed manually. WiFi is now supported out of the box If your WiFi driver is supported by the default linux tree, or is based on the popular RTL8188CUS chipset, then WiFi should work out of the box. Boot the image with the WiFi dongle plugged in (a powered hub is recommended). Run startx and select “WiFi Config”. You can scan for wireless networks and enter your wireless password and connect from the GUI. No need to install additional packages or scripts. See http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/2008. The post is mainly about performance improvements. 73, John G8BPQ

It alive! 8
My Raspberry PI arrived in today's mail. Hooked up a 5V;2A brick, a SDHC with Wheezy, and a USB to 2XPS2 with PS2 Keyboard and PS2 mouse. Once I actually connected the HDMI cable, worked as designed on my 23" monitor. Won't be able to play any more until Sunday. We are leaving for the Spokane Hamfest tomorrow.
