Some question to start...

Hi to all! I'm IU0MJE, Riccardo, from Italy. All the packet networks are dead, but I'd like to try to rebuild a new one in Lazio (Monterotondo). I have a big hardware repository (actually I can run from a Z20 Server, passing some PC, till Raspberry PI5 and Arduino), the radio shack may be ok too (FT-991, CRT6900N, FT-897 and FT-817 with original SCU-17 interface and some baofeng and radioddity mobiles)...
What I really need to build an AX.25 node, without a real TNC? I see many software like soundmodem, direwolf and more...
May be interesting the use of AX.25 protocol and route the IP network from base to my mobile (for example).
Any Idea?
?
Thanks to all,
IU0MJE

Hello Rick,

There are lots of write-ups on how to setup packet radio on Linux with Direwolf and the Linux kernel AX.25 stack.? Here is mine with a focus using a Raspberry Pi:

??

There are also guides out there using Linux + Direwolf + tools like BPQ32, etc.? It all depends on what features you're trying to offer.

Or just buy a conventional old fashioned TNC.

Dear! Thanks for your reply!
?
The initial idea was to publish a "private" server reachable using one of my domains offering a text chat (via web there will be some APIs webChat).
The primary step I'd like to obtain is a "pingable" server (I suppose via AX.25). The services will arrive in a second step... I have some services to expose (already exposed on the network), a BBS, a messaging system (this system can send mail to external too, and receive from external). There is no shortage of ideas :)

I would caution you on trying to send TCP/IP traffic over 1200bps AX.25 packet radio.? It can work but when I had done it back in the day, round-trip ping times was about 1500ms and the performance of a telnet session was terrible.? For packet, you need to stick to classic AX.25 sending the raw ASCII back and forth like what's done with classic BBSes, etc.
