I agree, this does look interesting but it's not initially clear how the typical "technical HAM" could use this new data modem with common HF gear.? I wonder if any documentation exists on describing how to setup such a thing instead of using this apart of what I assume is an "all in one communication appliance".

It is a sound card modem, in its infancy -- open source so that others can build on it. (It does include IP sockets).
