Re: Need Help

Hello David,

Something like that is usually a port problem. The troubleshoot script is pretty good at finding things like that. Glad that helped you get it going. Still may want to join the PiRLP group.

The first and most common question is always going to be "Have you run the troubleshoot script yet"? Also there is a PiRLP group that you may want to join and have better luck there.

Raspberry Pi (B) with TNC-Pi not working

I assembled the TNC-PI Kit and mounted it on the RPi. It passed the 3.3 volt test. The yellow DCD LED lights when there is APRS traffic on the radio, but there is no traffic on the screen, or, new stations. The command ls -l shows -rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi??? 0 Aug 16 02:14 pitnc_getparams. The command ./pitnc_getparams 0 0 does not show anything, it just brings up the prompt. Xastir is running and tnc port = /dev/ttyAMA0(that is a zero at the end). It doesn't look to me like Xastir is talking to the TNC. I have no software going other than Xastir. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Jerry

Re: Model B+

Good info.

Model B+

My Raspberry arrived yesterday morning.I didn't get around to smoke testing it til later in the afternoon. I had a hell of a time with that ^&%$%$ little chip!It is so small that it is easy to missplace and if you are not carefulwhen you install it it will miss the socket and drop into the case under the board. Then you have to disconnect everything and shakethe silly bugger out the little hole.?After about four hours of operation it appears to run almost 10 degrees cooler....see the attached screen shot for a Graph of the CPU temp.?I like the connecion arrangment. It allows for a neater cable arrangment. ?The Composite Video now is combined with the audio in one jack. I have an adaptor, but it is wired differently. Adafruit has a A/V cable that should work - ,?but is currently out of stock. The New RPi is now running my RMS Gate and Secondary FPAC node.<<Charley>>??? k4gbb

Bernards new FBB image

Kerry McKenzie

Greetings all
I would just like to publicly thank Bernard for his efforts with the FBB
Raspberry PI images that he has gone to great lengths to produce.
I have just loaded the new image on a PI Model B+ and it is working a treat!
It would have to be one of the easiest distros to setup yet for a Linux
beginner like myself.

Well done and thankyou!

Hello,

An update of AX.25 configured Raspbian distro SD card image is available for download.
Image size is 3.9 Gb. After expanding to an 8Gb SD card, system occupies 34% and 66% of the card is free.
It is based on January 2014 Raspbian distro with June 3.12.22 kernel.
Documentation page is here :

Main innovation is that graphic is handled by RPi hardware giving a better display performance
as demonstrated for example with Xastir APRS application.

Re: Pi-FM APRS Tracker?

Dear friends,
the attached file is the new release of the NBFM program, the narrow-band FM transmitter, for Raspbian distro.

Changes:
- name of program now ./nbfm (was ./nbfm.out Please modify your scripts).
- text frame and colors
- DMA used for higher frequency resolution (now <1kHz on 2m, was >10kHz)
- compiler optimization
- sub/audio tone frequency adjustment
- added output power level control

It would be very interesting if someone could give me reports on how it works on the field.
For example, the packet generator would be an interesting item to test.

As I've already said, the modulator is done using the DMA and it can't be so linear, but not only, because it also generates a lot of spurs.

Even if it charges more the CPU and degrades the modulation quality, the advantage of using higher sampling rates is the reduction of the spurs (that are not the harmonics).
Regarding this, please take a look at the following table, for 145MHz band (no subtone):

Sampling rate???? CPU load??? Output Power
?? 11025???????????? 10%???????? -3.2dB
?? 22500???????????? 16%???????? -0.7dB
?? 44100???????????? 29%???????? -0.2dB
?? 88200???????????? 48%????????? 0.0dB

That is to say if I have a 250mW amplifier, I can achieve about 250mW at the nominal frequency when using 88kHz sampling.
When, in the same conditions, I use 11kHz sampling, the output power is distributed more then a half to the spurs and less then a half to the nominal frequency (-3.2dB).
So my advice would be to use 22kHz, when spurs create problems, because it's a good compromise between modulation quality and spurs.

Up to 6m band (50MHz) the spurs are low so no problem to use 11kHz for sampling, and also the modulation is better because of the higher resolution.

Re: Pi-FM APRS Tracker?

1200 baud only? Any chance of getting the other speeds - 300, 2400, 4800,
9600?

Use "-B 300" or "-B 9600" command line options.

Re: Pi-FM APRS Tracker?

A test utility, included with the Dire Wolf software TNC application, can
generate the audio for a given packet in the usual monitor format.

Cool... Thanks!

$ echo -n 'WB2OSZ>WORLD:Hello, world!' | ./gen_packets -o x.wav -

4800, 9600?

Wondering if anyone is close enough that would like to come out
next year for the Detroit maker Faire to show off their PI set up(s)?

I did not think of asking here because of the low volume of emails
from the group :(

I am looking for something 'new' to show off for next year.

Email me off list if your interested.

Next year will be the sixth year of the event and of ham radio being
present.
