HamPi Question

Hello,

I am new to Raspberry Pi and HamPi. I would like to set up the Raspberry Pi 4 as a station computer. I have ordered and received what should work to do this. I have worked on a Mac for 27 years here at home. Unix and PC at work. .This seems like a good way to get all my software on one computer and interface with my Rig.

The advice has been to use an SD card and etch the image on it. Then pull the SD card as needed to update the image as software updates are released.

Since I first heard about HamPi - it seems they have worked on something and now a SSD based Flash Drive can be used for this as an alternative to the SD card.

Does one approach have advantages over the other? Is this worth implementing?

My Raspberry will be assembled later this week.

Several of us are still seeding it.

Add this to your torrent client, and it should eventually connect to a
bunch of seeders.

Re: Conky missing from build-a-pi v3

IIs it possible that your screen resolution settings are different and conky is running off to one side. I did a clean install of v3 and conky came right up. Is flrig working with wsjtx for you with cat? That is how I've run it always.

Re: SCU-17 Behind The Raspberry Pi?

Hello Brandon

Rather than writing, hope you don't mind but I've provided pics of my FT-817 setup to the Pi 3A+ (the "Pebble" usb battery unit for the Pi was just temp while I took the pics).

The Yaesu FT-891 are similar settings except; select the Radio in "Settings" as FT-891, connect a second usb cable between the Pi usb (I don't use an external usb bus, so I use a Pi4 with multiple usb ports) and the usb CAT port of the FT-891, don't connect a SCU-17/ACC cable to an FT-891 as CAT commands are only via the usb cable direct to the Yaesu-891.

Hope that makes sense.

73 Glen G0SBN

Yaesu FT-817 and SCU-17, cables are required to both the Data and Acc (CAT) ports, and a usb cable between SCU-17 and Pi.

I use "VNC Viewer" on my Wi-Fi network to remote control WSJT-X and JS8Calll on the Pi 3A+ which is sending CAT commands to the FT-817.

WSJT-X settings (note that I used 4800 baud on the FT-817)

JS8Call settings (note that I used 4800 baud on the FT-817)

End

Well, yes and no :-)

I see my message was received because I get a message that says I have a winlink message waiting. ?If I go to raw display, I can see it is the challenge from winlink. But I don¡¯t know how to get the message. I did not try to use the winlink commands since I am not yet logged in. ?I can also go on a website and see the message waiting for me.?

The challenge is that to get to the iGate that will forward my APRS message to the winlink network I need to go through a digipeater. I had to change the default message routing to increase the number of hops.

But that¡¯s as far as I¡¯ve been. I need to put more time into it.

Thanks for following up!

Since APRS is a data flooding system, there is no need- but it can be interesting- to learn how the packets flow..

Re: Pat Menu Config Screen

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Three techniques I¡¯ve found for overcoming small screens.?

Click on the window while holding down the Alt(/Option) key and drag the window around, you can move it up to reach all of the window.?

Install xrdp on the target machine and use an RDP client on another machine. When it connects it establishes a connection to a virtual desktop of a size you can specify.?

Access the target machine using?
ssh -X <machine address>
Then launch a GUI app from the shell and it will open in a window on the remote machine.?

Sent from an iPhone, don't ask whose.

Ron, I am using Build-a-Pi v. 3.0 on a new RPi4b 8gb - Conky is looking good and FLRIG for CAT with my FT-817 working well...? Do you have a good internet connection?? There are multiple downloads occuring while that script is running, (for a pretty long time), so I would recommend you do not try to use that Pi for anything else while its running.? OBTW, I did a fresh install of the latest Raspberry Pi OS, then made the necessary tweaks to copy it from the Micro SD Card to a USB 3.0 SSD and got it to boot up there, (no SD card), before rebooting on the SSD then running the script.? Doing so sped up the install significantly.

I should add, I moved my Raspberry Pi projects out of the house into our Travel trailer parked on our property - had a problem with GPS not working out there and was blaming it on the metal shell of the trailer.? It now turns out that I may have some kind of problem between my USB GPS receiver and the USB SSD trying to operate at the same time.? Will be looking into that further this week.

Conky missing from build-a-pi v3

Seems Conky is missing in the build-a-Pi v3 edition. Also the new WSJT-X v2.2.2 does no longer perform CAT connection with the Yaesu FT-817. For the moment I'm using Flrig as the interface to get things done.

Re: Package Installation Scripts

The Program Notepad++ is an excellent way to cross platform stuff like this. I agree with @nfg.
I use it extensively.?It is very easy to use.

Thanks Guys,

I gave it a go and it was just a matter of plugging it in and selecting the Ports and away it went.

A friend recently had an issue with a new Raspberry Pi 4 not displaying on his TV (not a computer monitor).? In his troubleshooting, he found using the HDMI port #1 (the one farthest away from the USB-C power connector) helped a little but would still see a black screen.? By accident, he REMOVED the micro-SD card while the Pi was on and saw the Rpi's video output!? In further troubleshooting, he got things working better when he enabled "hdmi_force_hotplug=1" in the /boot/config.txt file:

??

You also might try out the "hdmi_safe" setting and see if that helps get you something on the TV.? After that, you can work your way back until you determine which setting is required to work on your specific TV.
