Overcoming bad USB cables

After a lot of fussing with questionable USB cables and less than 4.8 volts at the far end of the cable I bought one of the little 3 amp Adjustable buck converters off ebay, adjusted the output to 5.3 volts and wired it directly to the USB 3.0 hub circuit board. ?No more loose or questionable connections or low voltage creating strange problems. ?I was particularly interested in RFI interference and was prepared to put add an external filter on the output but measuring the output noise with a scope showed about 2 millivolts of high frequency noise, non that interfered with the raspberry pi however I will put a copper shield around the buck converter and include an RFI filter for peace of mind. ? ? ? ?

Re: Display enlargement

If you have an old android tablet lying around (you can pick them up for <$50 for sure) you can use VNC Viewer to display the GUI remotely. I do that with a Pi I have connected to my CNC machine.

Clark -
Would you please supply make and model, and where you got it?

I am in the process of designing and building a Raspberry Pi monitoring system to each of the mountaintop
tower sites, and that sounds like a great portable monitor to add to the 4x4 service truck.

Thanks in advance

Rpi with wine and winlink express (RMS Express.exe) #apps

Winlink (RMS Express.exe), works reasonably well.

As a background, I have installed RMS Express.exe under wine under box86 on a Rpi 4.

RMS Express works pretty well. But I have a problem, and wondering if anyone has any insight.

1. I did a before snapshot of the files in the RMS Express directory
2. Created and sent from outside email and message to my callsign (wf5w@...) with //WL2K in the subject)
3. waited about a minute
4. did a session start (and got Message Received count of 1)
5. did an after snapshot of files in the RMS Express directory, (found 1 new .mime file)
6. displayed the new message .mime file, and verified that it was what I had send in step 2
7. BUT the message does not show up in the GUI under (I would presume Inbox)

Is that a fault of something in my wine configuration? or my incomplete knowledge of RMS Express
Or something else? Or is this something that I can't control and will have to live with?

Hi Ernie,
You could use your TV set connected via HDMI.
I really enjoy occasionally such a large display when I take with me a RaspBerry Pi 4 on vacation. Add a mouse and a keyboard and your are done.

Hi Ernie! First of all I'm cheap. I was looking for a monitor that I can use on POTA activation with my Pi 400. I use to have a Windows 7 laptop that finally broke and was on a closed and I learned that you can repurposed the laptop screen for use it like a second display or in my case, the monitor for my Pi 400.
It's a project on itself, but works. Here are the steps I take:
. I carefully remove the screen from the broken laptop, leaving the hinges attached to the screen.
. Carefully removed the bezel and the screen from the back plate and keep all this parts for later reassembly.
. In the back of the screen I found the model number and take a picture of the sticker to be sure.
. I Google "LP173WD1(the number in the sticker) screen controller drive board" and find an Amazon link to a vendor of my particular screen for $37 Canadian.
. I ordered it and received? it in about 15 days. The board came with the cables and other little boards for basic controls (power, settings, bright, contrast, etc).
. The board powers with 12V (I use an old 12V 800 mah) and the inputs are HDMI, VGA and even composite.
. I connect everything, reassembly the screen on the bezel and used a piece of wood to attached the hinges.

And the sarcastic attitude continues..
You never stated kit. Your comment was uncalled for being accusatory and insinuating me or anyone you directed it to was cheap.? No wonder people don't want to get into amateur radio with people like you acting all high and mighty.
Wouldn't surprise me if you were one of the ones sitting on 80m blasting away and screaming at people to get off your
"channel"

That's because they are a licensed reseller like Adafruit.? I'm just hoping someone has one they don't plan to use soon and are willing to part with it.
