Don,

?

As I said before, there is nothing to do by using the Raspbian Desktop.? There is no software to run, no configurations to be made, nothing.? All administration of the PiGate device is done using the admin web pages, especially the new interface which gives you lots of capabilities.? There is absolutely nothing to be gained by logging in directly.? The OS and the desktop GUI are there only because they come with the Raspbian disto.

?

Any sending of email is done using an external email client that is running on your laptop, tablet, or smart phone.? There is nothing on the GUI to use unless you want to use the rather crappy Claws email client.? There are so many more that will work that are much better.

?

That is all the PiGate is designed to do, send email to a Winlink RMS station.? If you are looking for something else, you're looking in the wrong place.? If you want a Raspberry Pi to use as a computer desktop, you should just use the standard Raspbian download or maybe one of the others some of the other hams have made up, like HamPi.

Sorry if I seem blunt.

I would not mess with the settings in any of the files on the PiGate image.? They are all there specifically to work with the TNC-Pi2 or TNC-Pi9k6 and if you make changes, it may not work.? I also wouldn't mess with any of the OS parameters, like turning the serial ports on or off.? Everything is setup correctly and it's really a plug and play image.? All you need to do is the initial setup outlined in detail in the docs.

If you have made changes, and you don't remember how to put them back exactly as before, just copy a new image to the SD card.

The TNC-Pi9k6 appears on the serial port as a KISS TNC modem.? Only software that "speaks" the KISS protocol can us it.? That would be one of the packet software suites, like Pat, linbpq, PiGate, APRS, etc.

Use one of those programs to unlock the "secrets" of the TNC.

At this point I¡¯m looking for how I could connect YAAC (for example) from the PI and set up a serial connection to the TNC in an attempt to get an APRS signal to a radio and audio back.

Depending on which board you purchase the appropriate firmware is pre loaded.? For instance if you get a TNC configured with the Raspberry PI headers then it has firmware loaded to interact with the PI using the GPIO pins set aside for serial communications (19200 baud btw).? If you get the "stand alone" TNC then the firmware loaded is for that specific configuration.

I have tested our TNC's with Mark's PiGate image and I don't recall having to change any settings.

One other item.? You can find pre-compiled binary's for the TNC9k6 on our site:?

HamPi power drain on idle

Now that a bunch of people have downloaded and installed HamPi, I'm curious if anyone has done any analysis of power drain on idle. Since the license disallows removal of BOINC, idle is never going to be really idle with HamPi. It'd be interesting to know how much impact this will have, especially on a battery-powered installation.

Don,

I have been playing around with my PiGate and have the same issues with the TNC. I did get mine in kit form from WVARC (etsy site) recently, and have been trying to figure out why the speed shows up as 25500 as well. After reading this thread and looking at the config files I see that the device is /dev/tyAMA0 and is aliased to tnc. When I disable the ax25 process and run "/usr/local/sbin/pitnc_getparams tnc 0" I get the follwoing output:

pitnc_getparams Version 0.0.0.5

Using Serial port /dev/ttyAMA0

Re: W3DJS Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Distribution v2.0 Released

John,
You are absolutely right, partitionning is not needed.
However, after three failures using dd for writing on brand new 32 Gb SD cards I suspected a hardware issue.
This is why I tried very though strategy (partitionning followed by a complete format).
After that Balena Etcher finished the job ! And I am glad I don't have to throw away my new cards !

Is Mat watching this thread?

There are docs available from the old Coastal Chipworks site that give you the procedure to setup the TNC correctly.? If you can't find them, let me know.

Without the TNC setup correctly, none of your connection attempts will work, so the log doesn't help/.

When I poll va7dep-10 it fails. Went to the Packet log.

I still have a couple of issues:

?

  1. When booting fresh I have to log into the PI using the password.? It took me till just about 5 minutes ago to reboot and try to access the PiGate without logging into the RPi.? Viola! Another cloud removed.? I was hung up on the RPi having to be ¡°running¡± in order for the software to be running.? So that was take care of.

?

  1. I have updated my location Lat/Long in decimal coordinates ?to my location (match the format in your video 4) and I get zero RMS stations near me.? Yet I know of at least 1 which is 5 miles away.

?

  1. I have created and sent two emails via Telnet ¨C I¡¯ve yet to receive them but I think that WL not the PiGate.? BUT I have noticed the following error when viewing the polling log: wl2ktelnet: WARNING: grid square not specified in config file.? Is that in the PiGate or on WL2K?

?

My next step is to find the web pages I found earlier that described how to attach a TNC to the AX25 and make that available to the PiGate so I can start evaluating/testing RF sending.

?

As I said before, I¡¯m more of an operator than a technician and it takes me a bit to catch up.? But once I catch up and the lightbulb goes off I¡¯m there in full.? I¡¯ve seen so many alternatives to how this can be used in our normal deployment methods.? My only challenge is how to make use of this at a shelter when I only have one reliable antenna available inside the shelter room. My current thought is leave the PiGate in my truck with a 55 Ah battery (to cover the period when the hurricane is blocking a good bit of sunshine) and a solar panel on the dash for when the sun is out to keep the battery going.? Connect that to the truck radio (running off the same battery) and duplexing to my D710.? Needs some more thought but that is where my head is at for the moment.

Re: W3DJS Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Distribution v2.0 Released

Thanks for the question.
I am using a 5.1V 2.5A power supply sold with RaspBerry 3b.
When connecting instead a Power supply directly on DRAWS board connector it shows 0.4A when setting voltage to 10V.
Thus I think that first power supply should deliver enough power i.e. 12.75W while 4W are needed.

Re: W3DJS Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Distribution v2.0 Released

You don't need to partition when copying a .img file, it clones the image onto the SD card bit for bit.

use ./pitnc_getparams 1 30

Uses i2c and you don't need to worry about the serial port for setting the data.??
Depending on the pi, there are different configurations that have to be gone thru to get the proper serial port... Pi3B/B+ and 4 have multiple UART's

There are docs available from the old Coastal Chipworks site that give you the procedure to setup the TNC correctly.? If you can't find them, let me know.

Without the TNC setup correctly, none of your connection attempts will work, so the log doesn't help/.

I had to use the new interface to add my GPS coordinate. I was trying via regular web .

When I poll va7dep-10 it fails. Went to the Packet log.

Don,

The TNC-Pi9k6 appears on the serial port as a KISS TNC modem.? Only software that "speaks" the KISS protocol can us it.? That would be one of the packet software suites, like Pat, linbpq, PiGate, APRS, etc.

Don,

Don,

Did you get this TNC from the WVARC guys?? Did you build it from a kit?? I'm not sure they are setting them up correctly before sending them out.? Perhaps they are leaving it up to you.

Is Mat watching this thread?

There are docs available from the old Coastal Chipworks site that give you the procedure to setup the TNC correctly.? If you can't find them, let me know.

Without the TNC setup correctly, none of your connection attempts will work, so the log doesn't help/.

?

?

I can¡¯t find any references to how it gets configured, what software to use, how to use it, etc.? I have put the KM4ACK Build a Pi on a card and have pieces of it working, but frankly I don¡¯t know (or can¡¯t find?) enough information on how to connect APRS (for example) to the TNC board.? I tried to list serial ports on the board and get nothing back (as in there are no serial ports?) But I have serial ports enabled.

?

At this point I¡¯m looking for how I could connect YAAC (for example) from the PI and set up a serial connection to the TNC in an attempt to get an APRS signal to a radio and audio back.

?

Also from your comment the Teensy board is loaded, how to I look at those directories to see that software from the RPI interface? I¡¯m assuming the TNC talks to the Pi to permit viewing those directories somehow?

As you can see I¡¯m relatively lost.

Re: Help with TNC9k6 setup

You have to manually set it to 1200 or 9600 on that param.? either set 12 or 96.
You will have to set all the parameters to what you need using pitnc_setparams

BUT I did find the TNC line and went ¨C hmm bet that would help!

?

So now I¡¯m off to read up on the AXPorts file and how to set that up.

?

Slowly but surely I¡¯m going to win this skirmish.

?

Thanks for the response and being there as needed.

Don,

?

The TNC-Pi9k6 appears on the serial port as a KISS TNC modem.? Only software that "speaks" the KISS protocol can us it.? That would be one of the packet software suites, like Pat, linbpq, PiGate, APRS, etc.

?

Use one of those programs to unlock the "secrets" of the TNC.

I purchased the pre-built board off Etsey that is intended to be a ¡°hat¡± to the Pi.? It is on the GPIO pins and lights up properly when the PI boots.? I can get the parameters from the board so I know it is connected and communicating at least at that level.? But my question becomes ¨C now what?

?

As you can see I¡¯m relatively lost.
