I have created this new subject as a split off from the original subject "Setup static IP address".??
Apparently when I created a new pi os image I lost the "by-id".? I searched around and finally found a fix.? Not being linux.debian user I did not know how to merge so I ended up doing a cut and paste to the following file:
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-serial.rules
which resolved my problem, however, I understand that if there is another update to the os this file gets overwritten unless the update has implemented this patch.
