You can expand the extra capacity in raspi-config on first boot on new medium. In terminal, sudo raspi-config. 73

It will copy everything including the card's formatting information. Howerer, if you back up to a larger card, it will end up the same usable size as the original card. You have to use gparted or something similar to expand the new file system.
