Event #20

So how did everyone like Event #20?? This one was much more fun for me than the last couple in which I found conditions to be very poor. Today I started out on 20 and was pleased to hear a few stations although the band was very noisy.? I made a couple of qsos early on.? I've got to say, I did not hear many stations calling cq from here at my QTH in northern CA.? I was able to snag some RGs as an SWL, however.??
?
I tried 15 and 10 meters but heard no stations over there.? I tried cqing a bit, and the reverse beacon network told me 15 was open -- I was even heard in Costa Rica and Germany.? But no one answered my RG cqing.? I heard nothing on 10, and the RBN did not register my calling.
?
After 2300, it got strangely quiet.? I didn't hear any RG stations although I heard a couple of ordinary hams just calling cq on 20.? I tried cqing but no answers.? Tried 15, same thing.? Tried again on 20 -- nothing. I started wondering if I had the event times wrong and if maybe the event ended at 2300 Z. Finally, at about 2330, I heard a strong signal at 14.054 calling, "CQ RG."? It was K0RO from MS. We worked, and I was happy.? The event hadn't ended.? I tuned up and down the RG band segment and heard no one else.? Went back to K0RO for another qso.? And that's how the last half hour of the event went for me.? I heard a couple other stations on 20 during that last half hour and copied maybe one RG from one of them.? But I kept going back to K0RO for more qsos and RGs.? Fun.? I'd end a qso with him, move up the band, call CQ, and when no one responded, I'd tune back to where K0RO was CQing and work him again, over and over until 2359.? I ended up copying about 30 RGs and sent about eight.? Thanks for the three qsos I made.
?
And thanks again to Drew for organizing things.? 73,? Larry, kf6ncx

Hi Larry,

K0RO was strong on this side also. I copied ten groups from him, about
half in QSOs and the others by SWL. That was the largest number of
groups copied from any one station. Others with 5 or 6 groups were
KG0RD, N3KRX and W3NP. The remaining stations- one to three groups each.
?
No luck on 15m. I spent the first hour or so on 20m, then moved to 40,
which was more active here. There was a steady response to my CQs there.

Don't know yet if I got all 25 of my groups successfully logged by other
stations. There are still a few out. I wasn't in top form on the key;
there were a few finger twisters among the alphanumerics and I was a
little distracted. That's my excuse, haha...

Agreed, it was a fun event. I started running around on 20 meters and tried to answer a few, but soon realized I had high SWR on my end fed antenna and my radio wasn't actually transmitting anything. Once I got that sorted out, I switched to 40 meters and called CQ. I got about halfway through my list of RGs that way, and, as you mentioned, around 2300, the bottom sort of dropped out, and I got no more responses after several minutes of calling. I tuned around a bit on 40, but didn't hear anyone else, so I have up at that point.?

Nonetheless, I had a good time for an hour or so. This was the first RG event if been able to participate in for a while. I enjoyed the addition of numbers to the RG groups. I'll echo Larry's thanks to Drew for organizing these fun events.?

Hi, Larry,

My experience was much like yours. I called CQ RG on 20m and got one reply from a SKCC member but not RG. Called again for about 15 minutes--what's going on? Radio shows power but checking RBN, I see one single line going to Iceland and not stateside. What?
I could hear a few stations at Sked Page frequencies but too faint to copy with QRN.
Tried 10m and 15m but dead quiet, like you reported.
Went to 40m which was very noisy but started hearing and working RGs after the first hour. Then things began to improve and from then on, it kept getting better. All in all, still a fun event but as someone put on the Sked page, "some scary QSB." Crazy, but I'll keep coming back. Yessir!

Yeah, similar here Larry,
?
  • ? I started out on 20 and caught K0RO who was in-it-to-win-it mode from the top of the hour.
  • ? I'm using a QRP radio here, (Xeigu G106) and it's a super rig but there's the realistic limitations of QRP power out to consider. I will rarely be the loudest voice in the room and in a pileup that means being more of a sniper.
  • ?The Antenna here is a 40m Zepp @ about 25' AGL so every other band is an extra compromise using my tuner too. Seeing all the DX stations in this was just awesome and I think I might take up an offer to borrow a 10m jpole and see if I can do a little better in that regard. I did cycle through all the bands but just didn't hear anyone so settled into 40m, knowing this band the best and just roamed up and down the dial.
  • ?Bands including 40m were sort of doing a quick yo-yo thing and that made it difficult to start but the timing of the fade lengthened as the hour went on so that cleared up.? Being a solid 2nd class operator I tend to approach all events as just another reason to dial around and toss a few extra points into the pool for the more serious contesters among us. I'm in these things for the fun, not really to win anything.? I stopped at a CQ from a nice fist who turned out not to be in the event but had a wonderful solid copy QSO with N1ESZ(Tony)? for a good ten minutes. Reverse Beacon showed my signals were heading to New England and south to the mid-Atlantic early. This was confirmed by the few stations who tried but just couldn't make me out from the mid west, even western PA to start.?
  • Catching AF2Z was a rare treat and it's always nice to catch an organizer live! One of the best things I've found over the years is hearing call signs you know and rooting them on. There's plenty of sports I find tedious and have no idea what people get for playing them let alone watching them on TV/Radio but hearing someone you know make that tough QSO or rare DX is just the best. I came across NA2DX calling CQ SKCC last night and Nate is another 40m bum, I don't know if he was in the RG event but it's just good to hear your neighbors out there making it happen.
? So that's the scoop from ARS N2QFD in Elmira, NY best 73 es tnx again Drew,

That was me complaining about the "scary QSB."? I threw out my call a couple times to stations I was copying clearly, who then fell off the face of the earth, leaving me in the dark as to what was transpiring.? Apologies if you were on the other end.? This was my first RG, and I can assure you I worked my tail off for my 4 points.? Womp womp!?
?
Thanks Drew for organizing.? I'm sure this will be fun once I have ICR and am not sweating buckets!

I did better this time, than last month. Thanks to K0RO in Mississippi, very strong signal here. I'm in northeast California. This was on 20 meters.
