Citrus Advertising
To All,
I've uploaded another (rather large) file, which is the "Billion Balls of Gold" advertising from Santa Fe. It features the shipping of citrus and has a photo of the San Bernardino precooler in it. It dates from the mid-to-late 1930s. Look in the SFRD folder in the files section. Enjoy. Keith Jordan |
California Growing Seasons
To All,
I've uploaded a jpeg file showing the growing seasons for various fruits and vegetables in California. This came from the Santa Fe files about 1947. I also uploaded the handouts from my presentation on the Santa Fe's USRA refrigerator cars, which I gave at Sunshine Model's Prototype Railroad Meet last fall in Naperville, IL. I've got lots of stuff related to citriculture and SFRD, so I'll share what I can. Just don't expect it tomorrow! Keith Jordan |

However, it may be based on a larger structure. You may want to ask Alpine Division Scale Models (), the current producers of the kit. Bob Chaparro Moderator |
Re: Group too focused?
Welcome aboard.
While the focus here is Southern California and citrus, I'm sure there will be comments and stories on other areas and other perishables, if only for comparison. For some of us, the original focus is all we can handle to do the the necessary research (e.g.: I'm in the process of contacting citrus growers, libraries and historical societies in Southern California, which will take a lot of time to accomplish). --- In citrusmodeling@..., <bluevoss@b...> wrote: All,real Lettuce fan (oddly, I can't eat the stuff). Group too focused?
All,
New member here. Oranges are nice, but I have to admit that I'm a real Lettuce fan (oddly, I can't eat the stuff). I model Salinas California on my Nscale layout - very busy place in the 50s, with small steamers shifting PFE cuts between the sheds and icing docks. I was just wondering if this group is ONLY for Orange-fans, or can matters of Lettuce, strawberries, or other items be included. Remember, if we don't stand united, we might perish (as in perishables - nuk nuk). Robert- |

saw the posting in the Santa Fe group so I thought I'd join.Saw the message in a digest on the [Ops-Ind] Yahoo Group. Am collecting ACL and SAL in H0 to run on Digitrax in my attic here in UK. Am putting together a string of PFE & RI ice reefers and FGE mechanical reefers for a late 50s train of reefers that would carry citrus from Florida to the west. I hope to learn more. Methinks I will need some WFEX cars. So, first question is: what would be in the WFEX cars from Florida? and where would they go in the western US? PFE Building
I just found your group and thought I would jump in here with a bit
of historical news. I was the President of the Board of Directors of the Yuma County Live Steamers, Inc., in Yuma, AZ, which was a tourist rail that came into being in 1984. In about 1986 we inherited the Pacific Fruit Express building that was being removed from its place downtown Yuma along the Southern Pacific tracks. It sat on blocks along the Colorado River for about two years until it was determined that it was not restorable. We had intended to use it for our tourist train depot and had obtained a HUD grant for that purpose. So unfortunately that piece of history is gone. I realize that this is in Arizona and you focus on California, but it was right across the border from Winterhaven, CA., and I thought it would be of interest to you. I currently reside in Peoria, IL., but I still play trains. Sharon Deckard President Illinois Prairie Railroad Foundation |
Re: We Are Growing!!
开云体育Joe—Jim Lancaster’s citrus web site has information on East Highland and Jim also has quite a few pictures on Highland. I’d be happy to share information with you as well as I have a number of Highland PH pictures and they are well illustrated in the Sanborne Maps. ? Bill Messecar ? Re: Redlands, CA
Gary
Thanks Jim, I understand not having time. I owe Bill some some PDF files of the Corona Station on the BNSF. I have AutoCAD files I got from an architect and can convert them for him.
?
When you have the time I would love to see what you have on Redlands. I hope you don't think I was critical of your web site. I truely understand what it takes to keep something like that up. Thank you for your efforts.

Thanks,

Jim Landcaster's packing house site () does not yet have photos for Redlands, however, I know these are planned. I've avoided exterior packing house photos for now because Jim has such a great site. The interior packing house photos on this site from the Library of Congress apparently were taken at a Santa Fe-served packing house. No other Redlands photos are on that site (I just checked again). You may want to contact the Redlands Historical Society () for help. I will be contacting every historical society in a community that had packinging houses and/or citrus groves to see what they can share with us but that will take a bit of time. 开云体育Gary,
?
I have a full set of recent photos of the still-standing packing houses in Redlands plus a write-up, all by Bill Messecar.? Just haven't had time to add them to the web site.? When I'm back home this weekend I'll look at what I have.

Jim Lancaster -----Original Message----- From: Gary Sent: Feb 22, 2005 1:08 PM To: citrusmodeling@... Subject: [citrusmodeling] Redlands, CA All,
Does anyone have photos of the packing house on the SP main track just off of Barton Road in West Redlands? This was at the west entrance to San Timateo Canyon.
?
Earlier I asked for any photos of any packing houses on the ATSF in Redlands and Mentone. Jim's web site is wonderful but currently lacks the photos I am asking for. Yes, I'm fully aware its a volunteer operation and he does not have all the time in the world to devote to it. I thank him greatly for all he has done to date.
This is just a query to anyone who may read this and know of photos somewhere.
You know, for a guy who grew up in Redlands you would think I would have taken more pictures. Just think, I was more interested in the noon time passing of the ATSF Chief than the packing houses. I left Redlands and moved to Arvada, CO in August 1971. I did do a photo?session of the Redlands Branch in 1976 and 1979 when I returned for a visit?with my parents. By then many things were torn down. The Inland Empire Citrus Belt will never be the same.
?
Everone take care, it's suppose to snow here tonight, YUCK!
