Microscale has sign sets for Sunkist. HO set 87-771 has the large Sunkist lettering in a size about 1/2" high by 4 1/2" wide. If you want a larger sign you can use the O sets 48-299 and 48-300.

Packing House in Capistrano

John R. signor

Regrading Capistrano, I took a cab ride from San Diego to Los Angeles in a Surfliner awhile back and the virtually the only orange groves left on the entire route are in the curves just above Capistrano depot and they looked a bit worse for wear...

In ~1974 I rode in a private car (1917 era business car) behind
the San Diegan. I remember feeling that I could just reach out
and grab an orange from the observation platform. (G) No wind
machines, however, that I recall seeing.

Alain--pulled the Sanborne map of Capistrano from the early 1930's and
it shows a vacant warehouse on a spur about 12/4 mile south of the depot
and I vaguely recall a small scale packing house located there when I
was photographing the SJC area in the late 60s and early 70s. The
building is about 200' long and 45' wide and took up most of the spur.
Think that fits the location of the photo you mentioned.

Subject: [citrusmodeling] Packing House in Capistrano

Hi list,

I'm new to this list and want to introduce myself. Some people on this
list may know me already from the different Santa Fe list.

My name is Alain Kap and I live in Luxembourg, Europe. I'm modeling
different Santa Fe locations and structures for my layout and my
modules,
some also for fun or challenge. As Southern California is one of my main
places of interest, I cannot come by the citrus industry and its related
facilities.

One project I'm in currently is the depot of Capistrano and its
surrounding buildings/industries etc. South of the depot is what I
suppose
a packing house. I could not locate any information or picture about
what
kind of brand it packed (Sunkist or ????). On a photo I think to see 2
reefers side by side. How was the track arrangement at the packing
house,
siding, stub ended tracks. What did the packing house look like. I will
only need a track side shot as space considerations limit it to a half
relief building.

Packing Houses usually had large Signs of their brandnames painted on
the
building. Are there any of these signs available that are suitable to
print out and apply to a model structure. I'm particularly thinking of
the
Sunkist sign.

Any help will be appreciated.

OK, men since most of the members are introducing themselves I guess I had better do the same so you'll know a little more about me if and when I e-mail the group OK.
?
My full name is John R.Gibson but all my friends and my radio handle is "Hoot" or Hoot Gibson so any of you that are young enough will put the connection of "Hoot" with Gibson and know that you would to be at least 60 years old or older to get the connection or unless you are a Western Country fan.? I was born and raised in Lamanda Park (East Pasadena) California. starting in 1932 so you can read that I'm 36X2 years young.
?
I model the 2nd District of the Los Angeles Division or the area from San Bernardino to Los Angels in HO scale here in our two car garage which will never see the likes of a car so the garage is all mine.
?
I will be in the background reading and gathering information and from time to time I will be sending e-mail's but for now I will stay quite OK.?
?
I do want to say thank you Bob for starting this group which is long overdue but I have always been surprised that Jim Lancaster did not start such a group long ago but it would seem the you are the chosen person so thank you again for your interest in the Citrus Industries and the railroads that served these industries.

Corona Processing Plant & P.E.

At one time the juice processing plant located on the East side of
Joy Street in Corona, just South of the Santa Fe Mainline, had
tracks servicing the plant which were parallel to Joy Street and
perpendicular to the S.F. mainline.

In the days before the nearby 91 Freeway, the Pacific Electric had
tracks running down Third Street in this same area. Does anyone
know if the P.E. served the Joy Street facility? Or can anyone
specify where the plants tracks joined the Santa Fe mainline?

Keep up the discussions as I believe we have a great potential to

Re: 2nd District Spurs

By the time that I explored the Cucamonga Foothill Spur in the late
1960s, there was little reason to indicate its purpose beyond the
spur to the winery along Foothill Blvd. The line ended in a citrus
area and the could have been a packinghouse there and if I recall
there were some metal tanks there that could been used for storage of
smudge oil. A group of steam fans leased the end of the line at one
time and ran some locomotives on it.

The Rialto Foothill Spur was once called the Rialto Citrus Spur, but
by the time I saw it there was no activity beyond Foothill Blvd and
the line was used as a team track to unload lumber. There was an
ammunition plant on the line at one time.

Some shippers would do there own icing and the railroad would spot
cleaned, but dry cars. The railroad would often bring these empty car
out and spot them on a spur or siding and the locals/switches would
use the as the shipper needed them. During the winter when the demand
for reefers was low, the excess cars were stored on trackage that was
not being uses for shippers.

Because of the grade on the Cucamonga Foothill Spur, there was a
switch switch derail installed north of the Pacific Electric crossing
(Grapeland on the PE). The location was correctly named as it was in
a vineyard. The crossing was stop and flag for the AT&SF.

The Santa Fe had several long spurs running north off their trackage
between Pasadena and San Bernardino. One was the Cucamonga-Foothill
spur
north up Milliken Ave about 5 miles. Does anyone know if this
served a
packing house or citrus groves? The other spur was the Rialto spur
which
went north about 2 miles--did this spur serve a packing house--and
if so
which one?
