Re: Kurtis-Winfield or ?
Looks like a very nice find, and is it in OR ... and where did it come from? ? I'd be curious what the Kurtis claim is based on, as the frame doesn't seem to follow his practice on other cars, and the cowl and grille are generic for the time ... the latter a speed shop item. ? Sure is an impressive induction and rear suspension, and the two seat configuration would add to the road racing probability. Track roadster, ala Vollstedt, Sutton, etc? -----Original Message-----

A good friend of mine purchased this car this year and is planning on restoring it. However, it has been very hard to track down the history. It is rumored that the car was at least partially built by Kurtis and a very complex manifold was built by Ed Winfield. We have not been able to substantiate any of this conclusively. However, the chassis seems to have been professionally built. The engine is an early Chrysler hemi and the transmission is a Packard. This is only a guess, but we both feel that the car was built in the late 40s or early 50s. It has independence suspension all the way around and we think it was meant to be a road racer. The back of the frame was cut off and the rollbar added at some point in its life when someone tried to turn it into a drag racer, but then gave up. If anyone has any knowledge of this car please let me know. Thanks.Dale LaFollette West Linn, OR -- Bob Storck KC MO USA |

??? Speaking of Culver City here's an old film from 1952 that I recently ran across.? The film is of very high quality so I assume it must have run on local television.? Maybe some of you here know more of the details of how this film came about.

Re: CJA - California Jalopy Association help wanted (Tom Luce?)
I think Don Noel raced with no alias. I actually met Don once in the 1990's at his son's body shop in west Los Angeles. I got to say Don must have had access to the Fountain of Youth. He looked like he did in 1957. Absolutely no aging. Truly remarkable. The others you mention I think they are different people, but I say that no real access to any of my research materials.

Of course, there is the Facebook groups "Gardena Stadium" and "Culver City Stadium" which has a ton of pictures on the CJA. Bob Mitchell Simi Valley CA USA

Re: CJA - California Jalopy Association help wanted (Tom Luce?)
Chuck, thanks for answering Bill. Interestingly, at one point, Culver City was alternating races for CJA jalopies with PRA hardtops. What makes it difficult to sort out is many of the same drivers appear in the results for both. And, yes, there were often disputes over how "stock" stock was.
?
The jalopies were the So Cal mainstays, while Central and Northern California primarily ran "Hardtops."
?
And, Bill, thanks for the kind words. Most of my research of late has been compiling short track results.

Re: CJA - California Jalopy Association help wanted (Tom Luce?)
Thanks to all who have replied on the CJA queries, I really appreciate the help!
?
Tom, after I'd asked, I found results (from Lincoln Park) that listed Ben Snyder.
?
One other driver I'm curious about, I've seen a "Don Paul" listed. Was there a Don Paul, or did the newspapers just get Don Noel wrong?
?
One more I wonder about: Ralph Slape and Ralph Cripe. Typo or two different drivers?
?
Similarly, am I assuming correctly that "Phil" Wilkerson is Billy, and "Walt" Sorenson is Warren?
?
Newspaper research turns up some very interesting spelling variations.

Re: CJA - California Jalopy Association help wanted (Tom Luce?)
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
Bill, the jalopies of the CJA were mostly Model A and Model B fords with flathead V-8s for power.? I still shudder to think of all the "Little Deuce Coupes" that ended their life this way.? They would be worth a fortune today!? The class of car that you mentioned
racing in TX were usually referred to as "Hardtops" because they utilized 1937 and later cars that?had the full steel top construction.? The rules varied by different associations, but the Ford in a Ford was a pretty universal rule.? ?Most of these groups
started out as strictly stock, but that probably lasted until the second race.

Re: CJA - California Jalopy Association help wanted (Tom Luce?)
My father (Otto) saw the Talbots at Langhorne in '41, later Duntov (Talbot) and Red Byron (Duesenberg/Ford) would stay at his house in N. Philadelphia when they ran Langhorne AAA races (Otto ran there with D. Wilson's Stutz Bearcat).
?
Otto crewed for Duntov at Indy in '46 and for Red Byron in '47....these pictures are of Duntov at Indy in '47 (Chinetti who knew the car well helped that year).?
