One of these radios found a home at my house yesterday. I am typically a collector / restorer of tube based radios, but have had a couple Harris RF-590's and a Watkins Johnson. I am familiar with digital circuits (I've been in the electronics engineering field most of my career) and know my way around an O'Scope. I have directly emailed Gary the following but thought I'd post to the group as well. 1. Radio is populated with "VLF" Eproms and an assortment of filters. 1a. Battery was changed (now dead) says 3.6v but manual says 2.4v. What should I replace it with? 2. The radio powers up, voltages at the power supply are good, but there is no front panel response. Small LCD shows two digits in upper right corner, Freq LCD shows random numbers that don't change, but can be different after power cycle. 3. The three OOL LEDs are lit on the A9 card - obviously pointing me to some phase lock issues. 4. There is 15v at the LCD lamps but they are not on. I can't imagine they are all bad. Unpowered there is 100 ohms across the lamp circuit so seems like some / most filaments are intact. 5. The Silver backing of the LCDs is discolored - are replacements available? 6. Where is a good source for spare parts? 7. I expect I'll have to go through and replace many, if not all, of the tantalums like I had to do on the Harris radios I had. I just got the radio yesterday and did a quick survey of condition last night. Hope to find time to dig further this weekend. I have downloaded the operating and service manuals as well. I have a working Racal Programmer type MA4073C , (plus x4 Cougar radios) I would like to trade with an EMU ( electronic messaging unit) for the PRC319 radio. I figured you sometimes see both going for silly money, so maybe a trade would be a fair deal. Since I am not using the Cougar radios in my possession, I have no use for the programmer, but I also own a PRC319 with no EMU. Just throwing this here, I have not played mil radios for a while I would appreciate anyone knowing the present worth of these items.

Hi all, I have a land rover FFR outfitted with US military radios. These radios are channelized where you need to type in the frequency (Harris). For general hamming use, this is undesirable. Instead, a VFO is more desirable. So I was thinking of installing an receiver in the LR (one possible option is a Rohde & Schwarz EK890). However, I also have a Syncal 2000 which has the VFO and would look more at home in a 1986 Defender Tithonus. I am trying to locate a 100W base for it. Not so much for the amplification, but the 24V capability and mounting. But why not have another transmitter in the truck, of course. The idea would be to VFO-around the bands on the Syncal, find a spot to operate and either key up on the Racal, or type in the frequency onto the Harris radio and go (with some antenna switching). Here are my questions: I have not used my Syncal 2000 much at all (maybe never). How decent is the receiver on it? Good? Sub-par? The VIU that the RT mounts on, does it mount onto a shock mount? Is this something that is available or unobtainable? Can someone confirm using the VIU allows using 24V? And can the radio and amp tolerate 28VDC (my battery when fully charged).
