Congratulation to you for owning the TRA921. I have a TRA931 which I have nearly completed restoration cosmetically and nearly completed collecting its ancillaries like MA988 speaker, handset, headset and handmike, dipole antenna and counterpoise plus the plug in whip, and recelled/rebuilt battery case.

The TRA921/931 series of HF rig are versatile and flexible with the built in 1khz clarifier. The tuner can almost tune up to anything metallic substanced hooked up to them. For outdoor use, they are waterproof and you don't really need to worry about rain, exceot lightnings.

This is the radio I want to have with me and my family should the 2012 event ever hit/materialise as you can take them for a swim (watermanship) and then climb to a high ground to prepare for a qso.

Google around and you might also find the manual available from ebay or other sources.

Hope this helps.

Serious qsos are done in prone positions.

Do you have to adjust yout antenna for each band? or frequency you use?? Also do you use a long wire atall??
As for me? im nestling on 80 meters since i can only do one band without ajdusting the legnth of my antenna.. i have a good tuner too.? but if i switch my band without redoing my antenna it will throw off my swr.Im cutting the wire to 75.8 ftt for the middle of the band.

Hi David KG4LQP,

?

You can find the battery box on ebay from RF Comm.? The MA988 speaker is also available from another seller (can’t recall his name) but he wants 180 bucks for it!? You can recell the battery case with the newer generation of NiMH batteries with higher capacity and smaller in size.? I think the 921 takes in 18V instead of 24V so you need around 9 cells.

?

You can buy the clansman center balun from ebay (just search for clansman center balun).? You can also buy the racal dipole antenna with pre-marked length for rapid field deployment and tear down field operation, really cool gear.

?

To deploy longwire (actually functions like a Marconi whip), connect one dipole wire to the balun terminal marked “1”, adjust the length according to the 921 or the 931 manual, then hang the remaining coiled wire to the tree or antenna mask.? Then connect the other dipole wire (adjust to the same length) to the balun terminal marked “0” and then straightened and leave it on the ground.

?

Whether you deploy dipole or longwire, you will need to retune when you jump from one band to another.? The tuner is a very able tuner and can tune almost anything metallic connected to the antenna terminal.? The proper way to tune is to first select an unoccupied frequency, then tune to get maximum noise, and then put the radio to low power, then select tune, tune to maximum reading on the meter, and then select high power to fine tune. ?This way you will minimize potential damage to the tuner.

?

You need to be able to power the 921 with battery to really enjoy the fun from field deployment.? I am contemplating to fabricate a carrying frame out of carbon reinforced fibre to carry my 931 in camping trips, and also to get myself ready if the2012 event ever happen ; )? Currently I carry the radio with the normal army backpack from my army days, adequate but not professional.

?

Hope this helps.

Hi David KG4LQP,

I forgot to mention one thing.? If you do get the battery case and recell it, be sure to construct a constant current charger and rate it at 10% battery capacity.? Be sure to also monitor the battery temperature while you charge the battery to get a feel of how warm they can become.? Charge until they are warm but not too hot to the touch and then note down the duration.? This way you can minimize potential damage to the batteries.? You do not need to buy the original charger as you probably pay at least 150 bucks for one which I thinik it is not worth it.

?

Hope this helps too.

Hi David

Just by accident I noticed that there is some Racal 921 info in the 19 set yahoogroup document

Try 1659 Racal-BCC 100 Watt HF SSB Station and Combat Radio Systems, Sept 1970

Royal-signals@... or via the 19 set group itself - you do have to be a member I think to get docs!
Its free though.

Following the instructions precisely and it works!
