CERT/RACES Team: I'm very saddened to be sending this and I haven't heard of any plans of memorial yet but wanted you all to know of his passing. Below is a post from Larry's List that really does a beautiful job of remembering him. 73 Chuck, may your signal always be 5-9 Matt KC4WCG In Loving Memory of Charles “Chuck” Digby, KB0TOT/SK On April 18, the airwaves fell silent for Charles “Chuck” Digby, KB0TOT, who signed off for the final QRT from his QTH in Leawood, KS. A lifelong Kansas City ham, Chuck was a 5-9 signal in amateur radio, emergency response, and the soulful wail of the musical saw. His vibrant spirit and knack for connecting folks made him a true facilitator to all. Chuck’s love for ham radio sparked in his teens, earning his KB0TOT callsign and General Class license. He was a regular on HF, VHF, and UHF, always preaching the gospel of simplex and local preparedness. Whether passing emergency traffic for Wyandotte County Emergency Management, chasing POTA activations, or ragchewing during ARRL Field Day, Chuck’s voice was a beacon of professionalism and camaraderie. Working alongside his QSO partner, Steve Everley, KC0VYS, he participated in Parks On The Air activations and discussions on Monday night POTA nets on KCWIDE, uniting hams with his infectious enthusiasm. From foxhunts to the recent Amelia Earhart Transatlantic Flight Field Day—where he jammed on his saw with Jerry Maccoux, W0UH, and Steve Smith, KW0Z—Chuck’s radio adventures were legendary. About a decade ago, while recovering from an injury, Chuck discovered the musical saw, filling a gap in Kansas City’s music scene with its sinewy, lyrical voice. He scoured for vintage saws, choosing them for tone and finish, and mastered the art of “playing between the notes.” His miter saw sang at local venues, cutting tempo so smoothly you’d swear it was a CW melody. Chuck’s sharp skill and sharp saw made every performance a DX-worthy event. A dedicated volunteer, Chuck served 18 years with the American Red Cross Heart of America Disaster Action Team, aided SKYWARN, and was a Community Emergency Response Team member. His woodworking crafted beauty from raw timber, much like his ability to build community. As a Boys & Girls Club board member, he sparked joy in young kids, and his FEMA/ICS certification kept him ready for any emergency. Left to cherish his signal are his QSO buddy Steve, KC0VYS, and countless hams, musicians, and neighbors. Chuck’s logbook is closed, but his CQ calls echo in our hearts.
