FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net tomorrow
Greetings and Salutations etc. Tomorrow, May 8th, is the second Sunday of the month and time once again for the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net. Winlink is a very powerful system for sending and receiving email and messages via radio and the internet. Recently, Winlink has added a mapping utility which creates a map showing the location of stations that have sent messages. A list of the message formats supporting the mapping utility can be found in the 'Mapping-GIS Forms'. I've figured out how to create a map and, from the last net, I can plainly see the majority of messages are sent by stations in FEMA Region 5. While it's true that this net is affiliated with the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all amateur radio stations and SHARES stations from all over are invited and welcome to attend. I want to again experiment with the map utility in tomorrow's net. For this net, please send me a Winlink Check In form. Here's how it's done: 1. Open a new Winlink message. Then: 1a. Enter W9REL in the 'To' field. 2. Open the Winlink Check-In form. 2a. Double-Click the Winlink Check In form from the 'Mapping-GIS Forms' section of the Standard Templates menu. A blank Check In form will appear. 3. On the Check In form: 3a. Enter the Date/Time field. 3b. Click 'Exercise' in the Select Status field. 3c. Select the appropriate band in the Band field. 3d. Select the appropriate mode in the Mode field. 3e. Enter 'W9REL' in the Send To field. 3f. Enter the callsign or callsigns of on-site operators in the Call Sign(s) of initial on-site operator(s) field. 3g. Enter the name of the operator in the Station Contact Name field. 4. In the 'Location' field, enter the operating location. For security reasons, I strongly recommend you not use your home address. Rather, enter prominent nearby location such as an intersection. 4a. In the LAT field, enter the decimal latitude of the location you entered. 4b. In the LON field, enter the decimal longitude of the location you entered (This should be a negative number). 4c. The MGRS and Grid fields will be automatically entered. 5. In the Comments section enter 'Exercise #2022-9' followed by your name, callsign, City, County, and State abbreviation (The commas between each entry are required). 6. If you wish, you can click the 'Save Check-In Data' to save your entry to your computer. I save all my messages just to have a record. 7. Click the 'Submit' button. This will transfer all the information from your Check-In form to the new message you created in Step 1. 8. Return to Winlink and the new message you created in Step 1. All the data you entered in the Check-In Form should be there. 9. Click 'Post To Outbox' on the top line menu. 10. Tomorrow (8 May), go to Winlink Express and from the top line menu, select the mode you'll use to send your message and then then click Open Session and start your Winlink session. If you don't have a Winlink account, send me an email: 1. Open your email client and start a new email. 2. In the To field, enter 'W9REL@...'. 3. If you wish, enter your email address in the CC field to have Winlink send you a confirmation copy of your email. 4. In the Subject line, enter '//WL2K Exercise 2022-9'. Remember, the //WL2K is required otherwise Winlink will reject your email. 5. In the text area of your email: 5a. Enter your operating location. For security reasons, I strongly recommend you not use your home address. Rather, enter a prominent nearby location such as an intersection. 5b. Enter the latitude and longitude of the location you entered above. Remember that your longitude should be a negative number. 5c. Enter 'Exercise #2022-9' your name, callsign, City, County, and State abbreviation (The commas between each entry are required). 6. Tomorrow (8 May) send your email. Next week, I'll have a go at creating a map from the check-in messages I receive and share it with you all. Have a good weekend. I hope you'll all send check-ins for the net. FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net
Hello All, The next FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net is tomorrow (Sunday, April 24th). I hope you’ll all participate. Although the net is sponsored by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all licensed amateur radio operators and SHARES stations, regardless of location, are welcome to participate. Although I’ve had poor luck with it so far, I’m still trying to work out how to create maps. So, for this week’s net, I’d like you send me a ‘Local Current Weather Report’ form. Here’s how you find it: 1. Open Winlink Express. 2. Start a new message. 3. In the ‘To’ field, enter my callsign W9REL. If you wish, you can send your message to others. Enter a semi-colon between each callsign or email address. 4. On the top line, click ‘Select Template’. 5. Click the ‘+’ sign next to Standard Templates. 6. Click the ‘+’ sign next to Mapping-GIS Forms’. 7. Double click ‘Local Weather Report’. A fresh weather report form will appear in a web browser window. The fields in the form are self-explanatory so I’ll not walk through each one. There are, however, a few I’d like to comment on: 1. For the latitude and longitude fields, I recommend, as a security measure, you not use the coordinates for your home. Rather, use the coordinates for a nearby public place. 2. For Measurements Used, select ‘Imperial’. 3. If there are any fields you don’t have information for, just leave them blank. 4. At the bottom left corner of the form, I recommend you click ‘Save Local WX Data’. This will save your information to your downloads folder should you want to recall your message later. 5. When you’re ready, click ‘Submit’. This will magically transfer all your information over to your message form and erase the form from the web browser. You’ll notice that the Subject line is filled in and on the Attach line, ‘RMS_Express_Form_Local Weather Report Viewer.xml;FormData.txt;’ has appeared. 6. On the top line of the message form, click ‘Post to Outbox’. 7. Tomorrow, Sunday April 24th, go back to Winlink Express and send your message. As you probably know, Telnet sends the message via the internet. Feel free to use it if you need to, but I prefer you use HF, VHF, or UHF if you are able. If you don’t have a Winlink account, you can still participate via email: 1. Open your email client and start a new email. 2. In the To line enter ‘W9REL@...’. 3. Begin the subject line with ‘//WL2K’. Without this, Winlink will reject your email. 4. Include in the text of your email: a. Your amateur or SHARES callsign and first name. b. Enter the latitude and longitude of a public place near your home. Use decimal degrees (example: 43.038940, -88.241740). c. Include your temperature, humidity, dewpoint, barometric pressure, cloud cover, wind speed and direction, and precipitation (if any). 5. Tomorrow (April 24th), send your email. I hope the weather is great where you are. Have a great, and safe, weekend. Skip W9REL Net Manager Did you know: You can send email using Winlink. 1. Start Winlink Express and start a new message. 2. In the ‘To’ field, enter a valid email address 3. Begin the ‘Subject’ field with ‘//Wl2K’. 4. Complete your email as usual. 5. On the top line of the message form, click ‘Post to Outbox’. 6. Select any Winlink transmission method, click ‘Open Session’ and send your email. Always keep good situational awareness --------------------------- Skip Sharpe W9REL

Hello All, The next FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net is tomorrow. Winlink is a very powerful tool for sending email and messages via amateur radio. The purpose of the net is to practice with Winlink and its message templates. I hope you all will participate and invite others to participate too. Remember that your longitude should be a negative number. 5c. Enter 'Exercise 2022-7, your name, callsign, City, County, State abbreviation (The commas between each entry are required). 6. Tomorrow, send your email. DID YOU KNOW: I always stress putting '//WL2K' at the beginning of the subject line, but I've never really explained why so here goes: Way back at the turn of the century, when Winlink was the new kid on the digital block, the development team needed a way to filter out spam, trash, and other undesired email. They decided on ‘//WL2K’ meaning Winlink 2000’ as it was known then at the start of the subject line. Without the //WL2K, the Winlink system will reject the message. So now you know. FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net this Sunday, March 13th
Hello Everyone, First off, a hearty thank you to all the stations who checked in on the 13 February FEMA Region 5 AUXCOM Winlink Net. We should have had a net Sunday (27 February) but my brain totally locked up and I didn't call the net. I'm really sorry. The FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink net is conducted on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Although the net is conducted by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOM group, it is open to all amateur radio operators and SHARES stations regardless of location. The purpose of this net is to familiarize Winlink users with the Winlink system and to encourage stations without a Winlink account to open one. Our next net is this coming Sunday (13 March). For this net, please send a 'Bulletin'. Here's how it's done: If you have a Winlink Account: 1. Open Winlink Express. 2. Open a new message form: 2a. Click the new message icon or click 'Message' then 'New Message'. 3. Open a new Bulletin form. 3a. In the top line ribbon menu, click 'Select Template'. 3b. Click the + sign next to 'Standard Templates'. 3c. Click the + sign next to 'General Forms'. 3d. Double click 'Bulletin'. 4. In the 'For (Name/Group)' field insert 'FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net'. 5. In the 'Bulletin Nr' field enter a message number, if you wish. 6. In the 'From (Name/Group)' field enter your first name, callsign, city, and state abbreviation. 7. In the 'Date/Time' field enter the date and time of your message. 8. In the 'Subject' field enter 'Exercise 2022-5'. 9. In the 'Select' field, select 'Informational'. 10. In the 'Bulletin' field enter a brief summary of your weather (current percipitation, sky condition, temperature, and anything else you think is pertinent). 11. If you wish, click the 'Save Bulletin Data' button to save your information to your computer. 12. Click the 'Submit' button to send the information on your form to Winlink Express. 13. Close your web browser and return to Winlink Express. 14. In Winlink Express, you should see the information from your Bulletin form in the new message form you opened earlier. 15. On the ribbon menu near the top of the screen, click 'Post To Outbox'. 16. On Sunday (13 March) Open Winlink Express. 16a. On the top line ribbon menu next to 'Open Session', select the mode you want to use to send your message(s). 16b. Click 'Open Session' and click 'Start'. If you don't currently have a Winlink account, please open one. Winlink is the method of choice for sending and receiving digital email and message traffic. Winlink Express is free and easy to use, especially if you're practicing regularly on this net. In the meantime, use the following procedure to send an email via the Winlink system. 1. Open your email client. 2. Open a new message form 3. In the 'To' field enter 'W9REL@...' 4. In the 'Subject line' enter '//WL2K Exercise 2022-5 FEMA Region 5 AUXCOM Winlink Net'. IMPORTANT: The '//WL2K' is required otherwise Winlink will reject your message. 5. In the text field enter your first name, callsign, city, and state followed by a brief summary of your weather (current percipitation, sky condition, temperature, anything else you think is pertinent). 6. On Sunday (13 March) send your email. I look forward to getting check-ins from all of you on Sunday the 13th. Keep warm, safe, and healthy Skip W9REL/NM

AUXCOMM voice net today at 2100Z - Important announcements
Today is the fourth Sunday in February, so please join us at 2100Z for the Region V Auxcomm voice net. Eastern Central 1600 1500 USB 60 meters channel 4 (If busy channels 5, 1, 2, 3) 1610 1510 LSB 7.280 +/- 1620 1520 D-STAR REF024A 1630 1530 DMR R5AUXCOMM (31673) Announcements Beginning with the voice net on March 13, which is also the first day of Daylight Saving time, we will return to 15-minute net segments. When HF conditions were poor and the volume of check-ins were smaller, we could fairly easily accommodate 10-minute segments. Now that HF band conditions are markedly improving and we’ve logged over 75 check-ins during the last two nets (could we hit 100 by the end of the year?), this change is essential. I’ve noticed on the last few nets there are stations checking-in on 60 meters using transmit bandwidths greater than 2.8 KHz. This is a violation of FCC rules pertaining to Amateur Radio’s secondary allocation on this band. Please insure that your transmit upper bandpass is set not to exceed 2800 Hz (2.8 KHz) before transmitting on 60 meters. I enjoy using greater transmit bandwidths because I’m an audiophile. I really get it! But on the 60 Meter band, I narrow my upper bandpass to comply with the regulation. This limitation has been imposed for good reason. We share 60 Meters with government stations who operate with primary privileges. Please remember this whenever you utilize 60 meters. Thank you for your continued support of the Auxcomm nets, and please let me know if you have any questions. 73! -- Marc Breckenridge, ND8W FEMA Region V Net Manager

FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net this Sunday, February 13th
Hello Everyone, This Sunday, 13 February, is the second Sunday of the month and we will hold the next FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net. While this net is sponsored by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all ham radio operators and those with SHARES callsigns are welcome and encouraged to check in. The purpose of this net to help Winlink skills current by providing practice with the Winlink Express program and its features. For this week's net, please use Winlink to send a Winlink Check In form to my email address. I hope as many stations as possible will check in and invite others to check in also. If you have a Winlink account: 1. Start Winlink 2. Start a new Winlink message 3. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL.radio@.... 4. On the ribbon menu, click 'Select Template', then click the '+' sign next to General Forms, then double click 'Winlink Check In'. Watch as a Check in form miraculously appears before your eyes. 5. Complete the form. In the comments field, insert 'Exercise #2022-03' followed by your grid square, first name, your call-sign, your city, your state abreviation, and the method you used to send the message (telnet, packet VHF, Vara HF, pactor, carrier pidgeon, whatever). 6. On Sunday (13 February), send your message. If you DO NOT have a Winlink account, what the heck? This is, after all, a Winlink net. Starting a Winlink account is free, as in no charge, zero denaro, butkus. Plus Winlink is easy to use, especially so if you regularly check in to this net. Go ahead, you know you want to. To check in via email: 1. Open your email client. 2. In the 'To' field, enter w9rel.radio@.... 2a. Start the Subject line with '//WL2K /R Feb 13th Check In' 3. Enter the following information (This would be much easier if you had the report form available on Winlink): 3a In the text field of your email, enter 'Exercise #2022-03 Check In' followed by your grid square, your first name, your callsign, and your state. If you wish, you can also include your blood type, your right thumbprint, and a DNA sample. It's up to you. 4. On Sunday the 13th, send your message. Did You Know: When sending a Winlink message via email, you must start the subject line with //WL2K otherwise Winlink will not accept the message. Keep healthy, warm, and safe and keep good situational awareness --------------------------- Skip Sharpe W9REL
