FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net tomorrow

Hello All,

The next FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net is tomorrow.? Winlink is a very powerful tool for sending email and messages via amateur radio.? The purpose of the net is to practice with Winlink and its message templates.? I hope you all will participate and invite others to participate too.

?

For this week’s net, I'd like each of you to send a check in form.? I'll produce and share a map of all contacts.? Here's the how-to:

1. Open a new message.

? 1a. Enter W9REL in the 'To' field.

? 1b. Double-Click the Winlink Check In form from the 'Mapping-GIS Forms' section of the Standard Templates menu.? A blank Check In form will appear.

2. On the Check In form:

? 2a. Fill in the Date/Time field.

? 2b. Select 'Exercise' in the Select Status field.

? 2c. Select the appropriate band in the Band field.

? 2d. Select the appropriate mode in the Mode field.

? 2e. Enter 'W9REL' in the Send To field.

? 2f. Enter the callsign or callsigns of on-site operators in the Call Sign(s) of initial on-site operator(s) field.

? 2g. Enter the name of the operator in the Station Contact Name field.

3. In the 'Location' field, enter the operating location.? For security reasons, I strongly recommend you not use your home address.? Rather, enter a prominent nearby location such as an intersection, park, or some other public space.

? 3a. In the 'LAT field', enter the decimal latitude of the location you entered.

? 3b. In the 'LON' field, enter the decimal longitude of the location you entered (This should be a negative number).

? 3c. The MGRS and Grid fields will be automatically entered.

4. In the 'Comments' section enter 'Exercise 2022-7', your name, callsign, City, County, State abbreviation (The commas between each entry are required).

5. If you wish, you can click the 'Save Check-In Data' to save your entry to your computer.? I save my messages just for the record.

6. Click the 'Submit' button.? This will transfer all the information from your Check-In form to the new message you created in Step 1.

7. Return to Winlink and the new message you created in Step 1.? All the data you entered in the Check-In Form should be there.

8. Click 'Post To Outbox' on the top line menu.

9. Tomorrow, go to Winlink Express and, from the top line menu, select the mode you'll use to send your message, then click Open Session and start your Winlink session.

?

If you don't have a Winlink account, send me an email:

1. Open your email client and start a new email.

2. In the To field, enter 'W9REL@...'.

3. If you wish, enter your email address in the CC field to have Winlink send you a confirmation copy of your email.

4. In the Subject line, enter '//WL2K Exercise 2022-7'.? See the Did You Know at the bottom of this message.

5. In the text area of your email:

?5a. Enter your operating location.? For security reasons, I strongly recommend you not use your home address.? Rather, enter prominent nearby location such as an intersection, a park or some other public space.

?5b. Enter the latitude and longitude of the location you entered above.? Remember that your longitude should be a negative number.

?5c. Enter 'Exercise 2022-7, your name, callsign, City, County, State abbreviation (The commas between each entry are required).

6. Tomorrow, send your email.

?

DID YOU KNOW:? I always stress putting '//WL2K' at the beginning of the subject line, but I've never really explained why so here goes:

Way back at the turn of the century, when Winlink was the new kid on the digital block, the development team needed a way to filter out spam, trash, and other undesired email.? They decided on ‘//WL2K’ meaning Winlink 2000’ as it was known then at the start of the subject line.? Without the //WL2K, the Winlink system will reject the message.? So now you know.

I want to experiment with this utility in Sunday's net.? Please send me a Winlink Check In form.? Here's how:
1. Open a new message.
? 1a. Enter W9REL in the 'To' field.

Announcements

?

  1. Beginning with the voice net on March 13, which is also the first day of Daylight Saving time, we will return to 15-minute net segments.? When HF conditions were poor and the volume of check-ins were smaller, we could fairly easily accommodate 10-minute segments.? Now that HF band conditions are markedly improving and we’ve logged over 75 check-ins during the last two nets (could we hit 100 by the end of the year?), this change is essential.

  2. I’ve noticed on the last few nets there are stations checking-in on 60 meters using transmit bandwidths greater than 2.8 KHz.? This is a violation of FCC rules pertaining to Amateur Radio’s secondary allocation on this band.? Please insure that your transmit upper bandpass is set not to exceed 2800 Hz (2.8 KHz) before transmitting on 60 meters.? I enjoy using greater transmit bandwidths because I’m an audiophile.? I really get it! ?But on the 60 Meter band, I narrow my upper bandpass to comply with the regulation.? This limitation has been imposed for good reason.? We share 60 Meters with government stations who operate with primary privileges.? Please remember this whenever you utilize 60 meters.

?

Thank you for your continued support of the Auxcomm nets, and please let me know if you have any questions.? 73! ?????

FEMA Region 5 AUXCOM Winlink Net this Sunday (9 January)

Hello Everyone,
Please pass this on to others who may be interested.

This Sunday (9 January) is the second Sunday of the month and time for the next FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net.? While this net is sponsored by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all ham radio operators and those with SHARES callsigns are encouraged to check in. I want to increase the number of stations checking in on this net so please spread the word!?

For this week's net, I'd like stations to send a Winlink Check In form

If you have a Winlink account:
1. Start Winlink
2. Start a new Winlink message
3. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL.?
4. On the ribbon menu, click 'Select Template', then click 'Standard Templates', then click 'General Forms', then double click 'Winlink Check In'.? VOILA! a check in form will open.
5. Complete the form??
? 5a. In the 'Comments' section, on a single line enter Exercise #2022-1, your grid square, your first name, your callsign, and your state.? Example: Exercise #2022-1, EN52, Skip, W9REL, Wisconsin.? If there is more than one operator at your location, use a separate line for each operator.
6. On Sunday (9 January) send the message to W9REL.

If you DO NOT have a Winlink account, why not?? This is, after all, a Winlink net.? Starting a Winlink account is free and the system is easy to use.??
To check in via email:
1. Open your email client.
2. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL@....
3. Begin the 'Subject' line with //WL2K /R followed by the message subject.? The //WL2K is required otherwise Winlink will reject the message.? The [space]/R identifies the precedence of your message as routine.
4. In the message text, enter Exercise #2022-1, your grid square, your first name, your callsign, and your state.
5. On Sunday send your message.??

I hope you all had a marvelous Holiday season.??

Keep healthy and safe and keep good situational awareness

A (slightly tardy) Merry Christmas wish!

Hello Folks and Merry Christmas!
I hope this holiday season is treating you well.
Yesterday was the fourth Saturday of the month and time for out bimonthly FEMA Region 5 AUXCOM Winlink Net.? I'm not grinch enough to require a net check-in on Christmas Day so I'll cheerfully accept check-ins through Wednesday December 29th.
Take care everyone. May you all enjoy a warm, safe, and healthy Christmas and New Years week and all through 2022.
