Re: Big Y matches not in block tree

Hello Mary

We get Big Y matches when there are less than 31 non matching variants. The NM can be public variants on the haplotree, or singleton private variants waiting for matches before being seen on the haplotree. We also see other Y37/67/111 matches on the blocktree, but their NM will be denoted with a single X.

For the last year or so, FTDNA have often drawn new branches on the haplotree (sometimes weeks) before the matching Big Y result is released. Hence we can see terminal branches with single Big Y results. Otherwise only parent branches (with 2 or more descendant branches) can have 0 Big Y (mostly) results.

It is often useful to compare the number of kits on the Discover Haplotree Reports with the blocktree.

Kind regards
John
