Exit Survey for Summer Sizzler
[email protected]? Mon 8/21/2023 11:45 PM Hello All! Here's some Weekend Homework Who still has an earwork from Sizzler? Nothing wrong in this whole world some little song won't cure.... After a few technical difficulties, the much-anticipated Exit Survey is here! We can't wait to hear your thoughts and experiences! Thank you to all who planned, performed, shared knowledge, and created a safe and fun environment for everyone. Early reviews have been fantastic. So many attended and had a really great time! Thank you to all who have shared pictures and experiences. Here is a chance for all to share your experiences. Now that you've had a chance to get home and let all the good vibes soak in, please take a moment to fill in the survey so the region knows what to continue and how to serve our singers the best way possible. Your answers will not be made public. No judgements. This is just information to help shape future events. If you did not attend, there is a small moment on the survey for you too so we can gather information on how to serve the most members. You will not have as many questions to answer but please share your insights on the ones available to you. Your voice will be heard. So much love for Martha and the Seminar team, Tammy and the amazing educational coordination she magically turned into an amazing weekend of becoming better performers, the fabulously entertaining Winners' Circle show, and our friendly and hardworking hosts ChannelAire and all who came together to make this such a success. Still coveting their fabulous show costumes. This could not happen without all this massive effort and sleepless nights. Let this information guide your responses. I tried the survey out on myself, and it seems to run smoothly but if you run into any issues, please reply to me at moonsuep@... . A Primer on Region 11’s email forum -- The R11ng
Hello all. I have received numerous questions from Region 11 members about the R11ng: what it is, how to sign up, how to use it, why messages don’t always show up and more! So, let’s dig in a bit: The R11ng (note that it is spelled with the number 11 to represent the one and only Region 11!) is an email forum for communicating official regional information and Chapter announcements. The forum is hosted by the website 开云体育. It is a separate entity from our region’s website at sairegion11.org. All members of the Region should subscribe to the R11ng email group to receive valuable notices and timely updates, as well as “how tos” like this one that you are reading now. All members may also post notices to the R11ng for distribution to the membership. Note that all emails are moderated. This means that when you send an email to the R11ng, it will be reviewed by your Communications Coordinator (that’s me!) for appropriateness before being approved and sent out. What is appropriate? Anything that is informational in nature and related to Region 11, our choruses and our quartets. If your message is inaccurate or unclear, I will ask you to edit for clarification before approving it. Also, note that since I do read and approve all messages before sending them out, your message may not be received in members’ inboxes for several hours after you send it or the next day, depending on my schedule. Since the R11ng is for announcements and is not a social forum, replies to R11ng emails are not expected or encouraged. In general, if you wish to comment on a R11ng announcement, you should contact the sender directly. Their email address will be included in the “from” information. There are exceptions but in general, we want to avoid filling members’ inboxes with replies and comments that are not necessarily intended for all members. To post an email or to subscribe/unsubscribe to the group, send an email to the following: Post: [email protected] Subscribe: [email protected] If you are a new member of the Region, your Chorus membership chair may add you to the R11ng but, if not, you should subscribe yourself. Unsubscribe: [email protected] Please do not take this action if you are active in Region 11. You do not need to send any content in the email. I have heard from some members that they are not receiving R11ng messages. This problem is most likely related to your email settings/service. Here are some things you can do: · In the settings of your email program, mark [email protected] as a safe sender · Add [email protected] to your email program’s address book. · Some email services just don’t play well with others, so it is possible that you may have to periodically check your spam folder to see if messages are being redirected there; in this case, reach out to your provider for assistance. · If you have never received any messages even though you believe you are subscribed, you should confirm that the email address is correct in the R11ng directory of members. You can do this by logging in to groups.io or by sending me an email (sairegion11communications@...) to check for you. · When members subscribe, they are set up to receive all individual messages. You can change this to receive messages grouped in a “digest” format. If you are an active member, I don’t recommend this. Did you know that you can go directly to the R11ng on groups.io and read any message that has been sent? To do this, you will need to be logged in to your 开云体育 account. You can log in to your account using any of these methods: Without setting a password Using your email address and account password Through a Facebook or Google account Chorus leadership: Please forward this message to your members and encourage any who have not subscribed to the R11ng, to do so now. Please let me know if you have any questions about the R11ng or need help subscribing or checking your subscription status. Best regards, Lora Goodpasture Communications Coordinator Region 11

Let's Sing Again Choreo
I've been asked by a couple of people to send this out so here it is: the proposed choreo plan from Summer Sizzler for the Green Chorus's song Let's Sing Again! You will notice a couple of slight differences between this and where we ended up due to changes made then and there at the seminar. It is my hope that each chorus can use this as a basis for their group's choreo on Let's Sing Again, but that each ensemble can embellish and build upon this simple plan with what works for them. Then as we progress we can share and grow from each other's ideas into something we can all live with and emulate! Anyways, hope you all enjoy and that someone within your chorus was part of the Songbirdz and can help teach (and develop) this choreo plan! Let me know if you need any clarification or have questions. Thanks everyone! Still smiling thinking of what fun Summer Sizzler 2024 was!!! P.S. There was a video too, but I don't really have a way to send that out, besides I want to see how it evolves and develops with all of the talented movers and shakers out there!!! Logan P.-M. Some people march to the beat of a different drummer. And some people POLKA! Pretty please? The physical appearance of your please makes no difference...

Contest Logo Contest!!
Region 11 and Region 21 will make history in 2025 in Torrance. CA, as they combine to hold their Spring contest together. Plans have been in the works for a while as both convention teams put their heads together to work out the details for a shared panel and venue for the contest to be held April 3-6, 2025. This joint contest will save both Regions money and should prove to be a winning experience for all attendees as we make new friends and share our performances. To kick off the effort, the Regions are sponsoring a logo design contest for the theme, "Harmony Hand-in-Hand." The creator of the winning logo will be recognized during contest weekend with VIP seating for two and special prizes from the merchandise that will be created for the event. So get your creative juices flowing, and submit your camera-ready logos by the September 30, 2024 deadline. Debbie Curtis Region 11 Convention Communications

Meet Darica Louie -- Region 11's new Young Voices in Harmony Coordinator
Hello Region 11, I'm so pleased to share some exciting news with you. First of all, as you probably know, Region 11 supports its young singers through an educational program known as the Young Women In Harmony (YWIH) program. .I am announcing today that, effective immediately, the program in Region 11 will be known as Young Voices in Harmony (YVIH). Your Regional Management Team, after consulting with leaders in other regions and with the young singers of Region 11, approved this change in order to align the program name with our values of inclusivity. Our YVIH program still shares the mission of the International YWIH program -- to introduce young singers to the barbershop musical art form and to provide opportunities for students and our youngest members to explore the world of barbershop music through education, festivals, workshops, camps and competitions. This brings me to the second bit of exciting news. I'm thrilled to introduce Darica Louie, a Youth member of Region 11 and the Santa Monica Chorus since 2017, as the Region's new Coordinator for the YVIH Program. Darica has just turned 26 (Happy birthday, Darica!) and while she is no longer a "youth," she brings to the role all her experience as a young singer and leader in our organization. Darica has already completed a two-year term on Santa Monica's Board and she is currently the Lead Section Leader in the chorus. In addition, she brings experiences as a participant and teacher in student theater and a variety of musical ensembles. Please read Darica's bio below to learn more about her background, her plans for her new role in Region 11, and her thoughts on the program's name change When you see Darica at Summer Sizzler, be sure to say hello and congratulations! And, when you see those bags being passed around at dinner, do not hesitate to add a dollar or two. The YVIH program is funded entirely by donations from our members. Let's show our support for the next generation of barbershop singers! Best regards, Lora Goodpasture Region 11 Communications Coordinator Hi, I’m Darica Louie (she/her) and I’m so excited to step into the role of Young Voices in Harmony Coordinator. I’ve been a Sweet Adeline in Santa Monica Chorus for the past seven years, since I was a freshman in college! Always a choir kid, I sang in various ensembles from chamber choirs to jazz choirs before stumbling upon a video of GQ and falling in love with the close harmonies of barbershop. It was serendipitous that when I eventually learned that there were barbershop choruses and not just quartets that my nearest chorus was Santa Monica. I plan on bringing my experiences of producing student theatre, teaching summer theater camps for kids k-12, and being a Sweet Adelines youth member to this position to shape a program that makes Regional 11 a welcoming and fun place to be for young singers. That brings me to the name change! I have experienced multiple times where I invited friends to form a youth quartet but the fact that we would be competing under the label of Young Women in Harmony was a barrier to them. These friends were trans/nonbinary/genderqueer in ways that calling them “young women“ would immediately make them feel misidentified and excluded so of course I would not expect them to endure that even though they were fine upper voices harmony singers. Renaming the program to Young Voices in Harmony is a simple step to include more people and follows in suit with other regions like Region 5 and Region 16 who have also changed “Women” for more inclusive options. Finally, I want to say I am hoping to channel the kindness, compassion and wisdom of many fantastic educators and mentors in my life. Specifically, I want to thank Laura Pallas Singer and honor Kaitlyn Phillips who held this position when I was just a new youth member finding my way in this Region. Please feel free to contact me at darica.louie@... if you have any questions or would like to be involved in the YVIH committee!

Introducing the Do Track -- A Learning tool for our two new Regional songs 3
Dear Region 11 Summer Sizzler Attendees, With Sizzler 2 weeks away, I have a learning tool I’d like to share with you for our 2 new songs -- the Do Track! I have made Do Tracks for “Let’s Sing Again” and “Wink and a Smile.” You can download the Do Tracks by visiting the Members Only section of the Region 11 website (sairegion11.org). You will find them in the STAR SONGS section under "A Wink and a Smile" and "Let's Sing Again." What is a “Do Track”? It is the words sung on the tonic ( AKA “the key of the song” or “1st scale step” or “Do” as in do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, Do). The “Do” track is sung in the timing ( both tempo and interpretation) including dynamics (not included on these tracks) of the musical plan. Why should you take the time to use this resource? Step One: While you sing along with me (maybe an Octave higher, but still on do) you are learning: · the lyrics · the timing of the lyrics · the tonal center · dynamics · and any artistic plans intended! Do this daily between now and Sizzler. Whew! What’s left? …. the notes! Step Two, once you are confident with the plan on do: · Practicing singing against do on your part. · Use the do track for maintaining pitch. This is a great way to make sure you are in tune. · Check your intervals against the dough track to make sure all intervals are clean and accurate. Please note, this technique is for technical proficiency only; story and character must be developed into this plan as early as possible! A special note about the interpretative plan for “Let’s Sing Again”: The learning tracks for this song are great for notes and words but they do not match the interp that we will be using at Summer Sizzler. There are numerous rhythmic changes that you will want to familiarize yourself with starting now. The good news is the Do Track for this song incorporates these rhythmic changes. In addition, there is now a version of the sheet music available on the website that is marked up to show these changes. I hope you find this tool helpful as we bring our Regional musical product to the next level! Don’t delay! Go the website at SAIregion11.org, Members Only, STAR SONGS and download the Do tracks for both songs and the annotated sheet music for Let’s Sing Again. Regions 11 and 21 are joining forces for Regional Competition 2025
Hello Members of Region 11 and Region 21, We are about to embark on a new era of regional competition. In 2025, Regions 11 and 21 are coming together for the first ever joint regional contest. Why we are doing it and how it will work Everyone probably knows that choruses have been struggling to return to our pre-COVID vigor. Throughout the organization, regions have seen membership drop and thus a substantial amount of revenue that supports our regional competitions also has been severely diminished. So first and foremost, this concept was proposed as a way for two regions to come together and share the expenses of a regional contest, thus reducing the burden on us all. We will share a venue, a judging panel, and a weekend together singing with our neighbors. Although we will all be competing on the same stage on the same day, each chorus will compete only against the other choruses in their respective regions. This also applies to the quartet contest. This is not a merger of Region 11 and Region 21; it is a cooperative endeavor to provide a financial break for all. Competitors from each region will be interspersed throughout the event. Besides the financial advantages, there are other benefits including the opportunity to get to know our fellow Sweet Adelines across the regions and to watch some amazing performances we would otherwise miss! When and Where – Mark your calendars! This event will take place at the Torrance Marriott, Redondo Beach on April 3-6, 2025. Consider this the cutting edge of Sweet Adelines competitions. It is an opportunity to show off our amazing regions to the entire Sweet Adelines organization. All eyes will be on us! Stay tuned for further details! Sizzler Hotel update etc.
We still have rooms available at the Courtyard Marriott for Sizzler weekend. We have 20 king rooms available on Thursday, 28 king rooms on Friday and 25 king rooms on Saturday. They are willing to extend the rooms to Friday and if they wish to book a room, we can call the Sales Department and leave a message for Sofia and she will get back to us. She won't be in the office tomorrow but will be there on Friday. They can call the front desk and ask for Ricky and he can help them as well. We are shy 9 room nights, so it would help us if we can get at least 9 more rooms booked ! ChannelAire will have some exciting Raffle Baskets so be prepared with your ticket skills. They recommend bringing along your little address labels, so you have more time to shop and less time filling out ticket after ticket by hand. Also, raffle pros suggest putting a fold in your ticket, they're easier to grab so it speeds the process along and they are often first chosen before the flat ones that get stuck to the bottom of the bag. Increase your chances, buy in bulk! Hope your color chorus songs are coming along! These are some really fun tunes so be ready to jump right in!
