Trial scoring at Fall/Winter - sign up now!

Region 11 again is offering a Trial Scoring opportunity at the 2001
Fall/Winter Regional Seminar during the Novice Quartet Contest on
Friday, November 9 in Bakersfield.

This is an excellent educational opportunity for singers of all levels
of expertise to learn more about our craft -- and everyone interested
in learning more about the specifics of a specific category should
consider participating!

This seminar's distinguished panel of judges you'll be working with
will include Dot Calvin in the category of Music, Judy Ashmore in the
category of Sound, Linda Taylor in the category of Expression, and
Peggy Hels in the category of Showmanship.

Anyone and everyone in your chorus is encouraged to pick a category,
pick up a pencil, and learn what judging is all about. All you need to
do is send me a note at the address below or -- better yet -- send me
an e-mail indicating your interest. Be sure you include your name,
chorus name, address, and the category - Music, Expression, Sound or
Showmanship - that you'd be interested in judging.

A pre-contest briefing will be held to give out paperwork and go over
each category and the use of scoresheets. Post-contest meetings with
individual judges will be held to answer questions and evaluate the
scoring work.

Attendance is limited to the first 17 applicants, so be sure to sign up
today! All participants will receive notification prior to competition
weekend of their judging category and the schedule for the pre-contest
briefing.

This is a fun class, a great way to see and hear the contest, and an
opportunity to take a walk in a judge's "shoes." I look forward to
seeing you in Bakersfield!

In harmony,

Kathy Laderman

GOOD NEWS TODAY FROM SALLY BRINER!? FEEL FREE TO PASS IT ON.

In a message dated 09/26/2001 3:05:49 PM Central Daylight Time, SallyBriner
writes:

Greetings all!

Great news!!!? All 25 lymph nodes checked for cancer cells are CLEAR!!!!!
That means no chemo!? Isn't that awesome?? She wanted me to let you guys know.

They have moved her to Room 828, which is a private room - the other floor
was a surgical ward and she had a 'demented' woman in the bed next to her!!!
That's all she needed.

They get Joni up 3 - 4 times a day and let her sit up.? She says it's much
more comfortable to just lie still!!? her spirits are good and go ahead and
give her a call at 760/739-3828.? If you have difficulty getting through,
try the outside number for Palomar Hospital, which is 760/739-3000 and
they'll connect you to her room.

Good news and I couldn't be happier for her!

Love to you all, and take care of yourselves!!!

Sally

New Region 11 Web site UP!

After several months of work, the all-new Region 11 Web site is up and
running. It has been completely redesigned by the very talented Marcia
Loftin of Agoura Hills Harmony. She's worked many, many (many) hours to
create this most informative site.

As I'm sure you know, a Web site is a "living" thing -- it will be updated on
a regular basis. Marcia and I have spent lots of time making sure that links
work, that information is correct, and that we haven't left anything out. If
you see an error, find an omission, or have a suggestion, please let Marcia
(lmloftin@...) or me know right away.

WARNING: If you go to the site from work, be aware that the music to "Sweet
Adeline" starts playing right away when the site loads. Marcia will change
the music default to OFF in the next day or so. But for now, unless you want
all your co-workers to know what you're doing (!), you might want to access
the site from home or wait for a few days!!

BIG TIME thanks to Marcia Loftin for her expertise and vision for this site!

www.sai-reg11.com (and then wait for the 1st page to load completely before
you hit "Click to Enter"!)

New about Joni Bescos

I was asked to forward this note to everyone. Joni's going to miss her first
International in something like 40 years. Please send notes and keep her in
your prayers.

----------------

Hello, everyone -

I just spoke with Sally Briner. She was at the hospital yesterday (9/24)
during and after Joni's surgery. She said the doctor was pleased with the
results, that he removed about 12" of colon and that there were 2 tumors
present ... that one appeared to be benign and the other malignant. He
hasn't decided whether or not she'll be on chemotherapy but that she probably
will. The length of the operation was around 1-2 hours, less than Sally had
thought it would be. She said that there is a feeding tube down Joni's
throat so it would be best not to call her in the hospital for a few days
because it's hard for her to talk around it. Joni's daughter is taking care
of the kitty, as well as things at her home. The following are addresses
that you may be concerned with:

HOSPITAL:

Palomar Hospital

Room 754

555 East Valley Parkway

Escondido, CA 92025

JONI'S HOME:

434 Mahogany Glen

Escondido, CA 92026

Sally said that the surgeon looked like some college kid, but that's what
happens when we begin to add decades to our lives. :) She felt that he
seemed to be quite competent.

Sally asked me to say hello to all of you and she apologized for not being in
touch with you herself, but her computer is down. That's as much information
as I have at this time. If I've missed sending it to anyone who should be
told, please go ahead and let her/him know. There are those who are not
online. Thank you.

Annual Region 11 dinner in Portland

(Please pass this message on to your chorus.)

--------------------

I know it's last minute, but by popular demand, I've put together another
Region 11 dinner at International. It's a great opportunity to connect with
friends near the end of the fantastic week in Portland.

WHEN: Friday, October 12 at 5:30 (between the Quartet finals and the Coronet
Club show)

WHERE: Pasta Bella ? 709 SW 17th Ave. -- about 2 miles from the Rose Garden
Arena. The MAX transit line stops right in front of the restaurant

MENU: We will be served family-style (if you were in Orlando's restaurant
last year, all that food was served family-style). We will all get plenty of
ALL of the following dishes:

-- Antipasto
-- Spinach salad with raspberry vinaigrette
-- Chicken breast in lemon sauce with artichokes, spinach, and sundried
tomatoes
-- Italian sausage and shrimp in tomato sauce (restaurant specialty)
-- Veal Ossobucco -- thinly sliced veal in white wine/lemon sauce
-- Tiramisu
-- Chocolate mousse

**Beverages are a la carte.**

PRICE: $28 (includes tip) -- there's no tax in Oregon!

The restaurant is small -- only seats 50 -- so the owner is closing it to the
public for our party! Therefore, this dinner is limited to the first 50
people who respond AND SEND ME A CHECK. No check, no reservation. Once I
reach 50 responses, others who are interested will go on a waiting list.

If you'd like to go, please RSVP right away, and then send me a check,
payable to Debbie Curtis. 464 Deerhurst Ave., Camarillo, CA 93012. I must
receive all checks BY OCTOBER 6.

Looking forward to another great Region 11 dinner at International!

Debbie

Tragic Loss of Barbershopper

From the Harmonet...

Forwarded from the President of the Centerville VA Chapter...

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Tragic Loss of Barbershopper
Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 09:28:47 -0400
From: Chuck Harner <harner_chuck@...>

From: Chuck Harner, President, Centreville, VA Chapter

It is with deep regret that I inform the Society of the loss of one of
our newer, but most enthusiastic members, Canfield (Bud) Boone, an Army
National Guard officer whose office was located in the direct impact
area at the Pentagon. Although it was suspected that Bud was a
casualty, since he didn't show for his car pool going home, it was not
until late yesterday that the Pentagon released the official "missing"
listing that included Bud's name.

Now, more than ever, our Society becomes directly connected with this
American tragedy. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Bud's widow:
Linda Boone
13948 Springstone Drive
Clifton, VA 20124-2361

I'm sure that Linda and their children will appreciate your prayers.
