starter radios

My wife and I have 2 of these, they work great, however due to covid we are not really utilizing them. I would be interested in selling them if anyone is interested.

Hi Susan,

I would just get a Baofeng UV-5r or similar handheld to start.? These Chinese radios make great entry level radios.

They do just about everything a beginner needs.

I'd recommend a spare battery (with larger capacity) and a speaker/mic.

If you're looking for a more traditional first time radio, then the Yaesu FT-60R, FT-65R or FT-4XR could be good choices.

However, there is no better value than the Baofeng. For $25-$40, you could be on the air with a dual band handheld.

Let me know when your group is ready to take the exam.

Now would be the worst time to get rid of them give the state of affairs.

You can utilize them from the comfort of home to talk to us!

Charge them up and join us for the QCECG weekly net on Sunday evenings at 8 PM.

Ron Wilkins has rack mount power supplies to give away.
I do not recall texting about starter radios.
Any transceiver could be your starter radios.
In my mind a starter radio for FM is 2 meters.
A starter radio for HF would be a 5 W rig.
It might not have all HF bands.
Generally starter radios are low cost.
My opinion of a starter radio.

A starter radio is a ¡°simple to use ¨C basic¡± radio. Often used as to be more affordable.

?

An old Icom 735 or 706 would be a perfect example of a starter HF radio.? Or for something new, a Yaesu FT-891 is also fairly basic.

?

And a Yaesu FT-8800 would be great starter VHF / UHF starter, as it¡¯s very basic.

?

Ideally you want to start with something that has some power (100 watts for HF & 25 ¨C 50 watts for VHF / UHF), unless there is a knowledge and desire to wok QRP.

I personally would not recommend QRP as a starter, as it takes more advanced skill to use it and the user could become very frustrated by not making contacts due to the power difference between him & the 100 watt to 1500 watt station he¡¯s trying to talk to.

I agree with you, Doug.? My mind set is do more with less.
I was in California club that was first in ARRL classification 8A and we won that class 18 years in a row.? All radios were 5W limit.? We were all on battery/solar.
Most of us were on CW but VHF was SSB.
I am surprised to see the exploding SOTA/POTA enjoyment and most operators run 5W. In another CA club no one did field day with CW and everyone ran 100 watts.? I was an exception with my mag loop antenna running 5W Cw.
I worked CW to ham on Queen Mary and had a number of contacts no one else had.
Again, your reccomendation is correct.? My home here in AZ has antenna restrictions and I am working on low profile antenna.

The recent post was for a sale of HP power supplies.
?
Unfortunately, the post was added to a 3 year old thread regarding the sale of some "starter" radios.
?
Ron:? I think your post offering the HP power supplies should have its own subject line.? More members would likely read it
