Re: starter radios

A starter radio is a ¡°simple to use ¨C basic¡± radio. Often used as to be more affordable.

?

An old Icom 735 or 706 would be a perfect example of a starter HF radio.? Or for something new, a Yaesu FT-891 is also fairly basic.

?

And a Yaesu FT-8800 would be great starter VHF / UHF starter, as it¡¯s very basic.

?

Ideally you want to start with something that has some power (100 watts for HF & 25 ¨C 50 watts for VHF / UHF), unless there is a knowledge and desire to wok QRP.

I personally would not recommend QRP as a starter, as it takes more advanced skill to use it and the user could become very frustrated by not making contacts due to the power difference between him & the 100 watt to 1500 watt station he¡¯s trying to talk to.

Ron Wilkins has rack mount power supplies to give away.
I do not recall texting about starter radios.
Any transceiver could be your starter radios.
In my mind a starter radio for FM is 2 meters.
A starter radio for HF would be a 5 W rig.
It might not have all HF bands.
Generally starter radios are low cost.
My opinion of a starter radio.
