Hi Jess,
First let me say that I am not a commercial fine art printing studio only a single person artist. So my needs, and solutions, are very specific, and in some ways similar to your questions.
Since I print with the piezography solution (inks, software, workflow) I also wanted to keep that system disconnected from the Internet. So I repurposed an old iMac, running Catalina, connected to my Epson P6000. I use the printer for making digital negatives (primarily Pt./Pd. and gum/cyano over), polymer plates (for direct to plate gravure) and a little inkjet printing (proofing and final prints). The iMac only has PrintTool and the QTR tools (the bare minimum for printing - and nothing else). No editing is done here. Separately I have a MacStudio fully configured (H/W and S/W) for image libraries, editing. etc.. I use a USB drive to shuttle images and install .dmg files (PrintTool, QTR..) over to the iMac. The only thing to always double check after installing the applications is that they have full R/W privileges (but this is an easy check).
My suggestion is to repurpose your MacBook Pro connected to your 3880 via USB; and, of course, not connected to the Internet so no unwanted or unexpected Epson updates or “upgrades". Not sure what version of OS you are currently running but if it is working now for your printing needs then I would leave it alone. Separately invest in the new Mac mini M4 with one of the third party port extenders that matches the fit, finish, and form factor of the Mac mini. Load it up with as much memory as you can; with all your creative (PS, LR, etc.) and QCDN software etc.; and a cohesive 3-tier backup strategy.
Lastly, IMHO, the 3880 was one of the last, best 17” printers Epson made that would allow user control and 3rd party inks (without major hassle). While the older P800 and new 900 are very, very good I would keep that 3880 for as long as it still works for you!
Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I’m trying to wrap my brain around how that would work- somehow getting PrintTool and photoshop on the Mini without internet. Or do I update the OS and internet- download, then go back to a previous version of OS and disable internet? I figured I’d put the photos on a thumb drive from the MacBook to print on the mini. Any details or workflows you have mastered would be appreciated. I print digital negatives (for pt/pd, gum bichromate, cyanotype, etc.) and hope to venture into Photogravure. I use Print Tool, QCDN/QTR, Photoshop, Lightroom, FYI.

?Hello!!
I was wondering if anyone has experience installing QTR on Epson Ecotank printers. I’ve read in other posts that for the L1800 model, it’s possible to use the profile of the 1400/1430. Has anyone tested it with the L8180 (8550)?
Would it be possible to use another profile or make some kind of adaptation to make it work with this model? Best regards,

Re: Revisiting Carbon 6/7/8 in 2024
Hi Jeff - I am new to this group.? Thanks for your videos and postings about rescuing your printer.? I was recently gifted a non-working 7800 was wanting to ask you a couple of questions if I could.? To summarize, the 7800 had sat for about ten years unused, am trying to clean it and get it working again.? I have a 9800 that I have owned and printed with since 2006 so I am familiar with those printers but this 7800 has old ink stuck in the C, M and Y lines that won't clear. I have run two init fills using piezo and all the other 5 lines seem to have cleared or partially cleared, but not those three.? I was also given a set of inkjetmall's cleaning carts and 700ml of piezoflush., and? I just purchased a gallon of piezo and was planning to fill all the carts with that, remove the damper holder as in your video and try to pull piezo through all the lines using an inkjetmall syringe like the one you used in your video to unclog and clean them, then replace all the dampers and the o-rings and nozzle extensions with new ones I ordered from Sdott.? I have a small bottle of magic bullet I was also given with the printer and after reading the posts above I thought I would use that as a last step to clean the head, then try and init fill with piezo and run test prints with piezo to check if that clears the lines.? One question I had for you - you posted above that you invested $50CDN for 1L cleaning fluid - can I ask what you are using and where you got it for that price?? That works out to around $35US, and at $300US for 4L for the piezo it is costing me more than twice as much.? I plan to use piezo once I get to the final init fill and printing to check channels, but wouldn't mind having an less expensive alternative for cleaner if it works just as well.? You also put down $160CDN for a 7880 refillable cart set, can I ask where you got those?? The refillable carts I was given with the printer included a receipt showing they cost over three times that.? Curious where you are getting those.? Thanks again for your video and the commentary, really helpful.

Re: qtr and mac o/s sequoia
Ross, thanks so much for pointing that out - I am a relative newbie to macs - you are most correct 14.2 is sonoma. That's one of the things I hate about macs - the silly names. Again sorry if I cause any confusion

I would just point out that 14.2 is not Sequoia, it is Sonoma.? Sequoia starts with OS 15.
Regards,
Ross.
Mike,? As you may know, many people have issues with QTR and MacOS. As a data?point - I am running a mac mini with an M2 -Sequoia 14.2 and my QTR is shown as 2.8.0 with a P900 printer and everything seems to work. I also use QuadToneProfiler- DN-3 with this set up. I use this for cyanotypes, gum and Photogravure?(DTP).
I have not upgraded to MacOS 15 and I am fine with QTR 2.8.0 ...... I didn't know QTR had a 2.8.2 - I will have to look into that to see what upgrades have been added, but I will probably stay with my current set up as long as I can.
Dave anyone know if qtr 2.8.2 supports mac o/s sequoia on the m series mac processors??
?
that o/s is not listed in the description on the qtr website.?
?
I am getting terrible prints from it is why I ask (with epson p900)

FWIW, I'm not it the problems group: my setup is working just fine.
?
Mac Studio M2 Max
OS Sequoia 15.4
Epson P6000 and 3880
QTR 2.8.2
PrintTool 2.3.4

?I'm a Canson Certified fine art printer, and have printed several shows with that combination. They all look as expected.

Re: One more potential tip for the P5370
Good to know Sandy, especially if/when I get that printer for my home lab where I could leave a stack of Pictorico in the cassette.
I haven’t figured out how to use the cassette in a gang lab since everyone has their own Pictorico…so it’d be opening and loading the tray all the time…
Chris
?
Have you tried loading the film from the paper cassette? My experience with the 4880 and now the P5370 is that sheet film or paper will load much easier from the paper cassette than the top feed.?

One more potential tip for the P5370
If anyone has worked with the P5370 and it keeps showing the error message “paper not detected,” this week I tried taping one edge with opaque tape, worked but not always, drawing sharpie
pen lines along the bottom and side edge (in both instances assuming it is an OPTICAL issue detecting the paper) also worked but not always. Well yesterday teaching a digital negatives workshop one of my students offhandedly mentioned that she pushes down
on the top edge of the OHP as it is being detected, essentially putting a bit more weight or pressure on the bottom edge, and it solved the problem. It actually worked consistently. They had figured it was a weight issue, not an optical issue.
Don’t have any proof of this but thought I’d share anyway because that ding ding ding error light and message is really annoying especially in a class of 16.
Note that all my other printers I have used, 1900, 2200, 2400, 3800, 3880, P700, P800, P900 have never displayed this tendency to not detect the paper, but the P5370 is the most I would
say “pro” printer of all of these.

We set one of these printers up in a workshop last year and got it working just fine. I seem to remember there being a support tray that can be pulled out to support the carrier as it is printed.?
I do remember loading the carrier was sort of an acrobatic exercise getting the front of the carrier aligned with a registration mark buried pretty far back in the printer.
It sounds like you are using Toyobo plates and the roller marks are a known problem with those plates. Many have have reported success letting them dry for 30 minutes at low heat after the protective covering is removed. Torelief plates don’t exhibit this issue.
The media settings we recently used for a P900 are outline here:
