I think it behaves like that when you try to print anything other than a TIFF...QTR won't work with other formats so you have to save PSD or GIF or whaever as

QTR and MacOSX 2.8 with Epson 2200

Yesterday I downloaded QTR. Everything seems to be in the right
place. QTR appears in Print Center. The problem is that nothing happens when I press print. I don't even get an error message. The printer is connected via USB. It works fine using the standard driver. I have tried everything. I can't think of anything more to do. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Richard Garnett |

The curves are used for toning (warm print tone vs cool print tone) They apply equally throughout tonal (highlights and shadow) range. The sliders allow you to blend different % of warm and cool to create a tone to your liking. I am using UT2 inks so I don't know alot about some of the other questions. I would suggets setting up a warm curve and a cool curve and blend them at different % (ie 50-50, 75,25, 100-0) and print a series of step wedges. You can quickly get the feel for it on 1 shhet of paper. You might try a google seach for tutorials on QTR. The only one I know of is Tom Moore's for curve creation. DBWTP is by far the best source of information, but as you said, it is very difficult to navigate the search engine. Looking in old files I have saved, it appears QTR for windows came out in the beginning or middle of August 2004. There was a lot of traffic about basic issues during that time frame. Download the previous version of QTR for OS X (2.0 beta 9, bottom of the main page)-- it will containt the curve creation folder-- then reinstall the latest version (2.1d) on top of that. One of the first things I learned (via the b/w
maillist) was that the one curve labeled 'no black-neutral' uses no color
ink--BUT--it is warm (this drove me crazy) because the 2200's black inks,
particularly PK--is warm.? I knew that--but I hadn't gotten my head around
the fact that it was using only the black inks I guess.? Anyhow--I was told
that this was one NOT to use or to use in conjunction with other curves--not by
itself.

Ah, forgot your first question--no, they both
apply to the print--just a blend of the 2 curves.? Someone on the b/w list
suggested that you print a 'roundabout' of the blends--perhaps starting at
100%-10%/90%-90%/10%-100% and 10% each step.? I haven't yet done that

The coding, as I understand it
is---UC--ultrachrome inks (the OEM colored inks),? PK for photoblack
cartridge, MK for matteblack cartridge.? Then--the name of the particular
paper, and warm, cool or sepia.

Another thing that is helpful--you can drag
the print within the white window--if you are printing a small print--and want
to place it on the page--its done there most easily.

I just discovered that there was a Windows version of QTR a few days ago. I have downloaded it and have been churning out test prints. Here is my config: OS: Windows Printer: Epson 2200 Inks: UC with Photo Black Paper: Epson Prem. Luster, Kirkland Pro. glossy QTR: 2.2.1 standalone with QTRgui Current goal: To print Neutral BW prints on a variety of papers. Like others I often print color on this printer, as well so I am not interested in switching to dedicated BW inks at this time. I am currently trying to understand Curves. I have read through the QTRgui help, but I am still pretty ignorant. Here is a list of my current questions: 1. There are two curves used in printing. What is the difference between the two? Is one applied to highlights and the other to shadows, or are they just blended uniformly? 2. The "blend percentage: is described as: "The blend percentage shows the amount of the left hand tone curve to be used." ??? What does this mean precisely? Since there is a slider that moves from the left to the right curve, I assume that this adjusts the "balance" between the left curve and the right curve. Again is this the point at which one curve takes over or is it an overall blending across all parts of the image? 3. There appears to be only one neutral curve "UC-NoBlack-neutral". All other curves appear to have some form of toning. I'm guessing that this curve can be used with all papers? I have used this preset for both the left and right curves for almost all of my printing so far. I this the correct way to get neutral prints? Are there other options I should investigate? 4. The curve names appear to be some kind of encoding of the ink, paper, and tone. Is there any way to get a full decoding of the curve name? 5. Are there any docs or webpages I should be reading to bring me up to speed? Please don't suggest that I trudge through the thousands of posts in DBWTP. Thanks in advance for your help. Hi all,
I'm struggling with a lot of stuff right now - it's late and I'm going to go to bed before I do something really dumb - but before I turn in - I've just got time to shout HELP! Firstly I am amazed by the goodwill that the internet community shares - I always try to help my fellows where I can too... I have had an Epson 2100/2200 for a couple of years and have settled on a reasonably functional process - Ilford Smooth Pearl with the Ilford profiles (I've just about got to grips with using photoshop to apply the profile and Epson's driver set to 'no colour adjustment'). This works well for colour. I also use a Spyder to calibrate my monitor. This is great until I come to do black and white. I am a member of a portrait 'competition' club - every 6 months we each place our best colour and our best B&W prints on the table at the local club house. Everyone elses B&W (traditional film/prints) look great - mine turn a funny colour - yes, you guessed it metamerism! So having read lots of great stuff about QTR - and having just 'upgraded' to an XP PC I am able to join the club and give it a try. (Version 2.2.1 using download 2.2b) First impressions are that the GUI does a great job and the whole concept is wonderful - but! But - I feel like an outcast - I'm using XP and not MAC or Unix! I had a load of hassel trying to load the tutorials etc that come as stuffit rather than zip, but I got there in the end. I'm not sure when/if Aladdin will come for my kneecaps for using their 'expander'... So now I give it a go - I got a reasonble - if warm print on Epson Premium Semi Gloss using 'no curves', but when I told the QTR GUI that it was wokring with EPSG (UCpk-EPremSemiGloss-warm.quad) I got a terribly heavy print with very blocked up blacks. (I am using the photo black not the matt black ink). I haven't tried to create my own curve yet - I thought I'd have a pop with the standard ones first and see how I get on. I've also read that Ilford profiles for the Epson UC inks are out there, but not in my download, and not in a any downloadable profiles that I could find. Any pointers? Also - how the hell do I read this forum? I use dpreview but I can't get my head round Yahoo, nothing seems to 'flow'. I can't follow the threads. I'm sure it's just another case of me hitting the wrong button... Sorry if I sound tired and emotional (it's just because I am!) QTR workflow with PhotoShop on Windows
I have several questions regarding the workflow for QTRgui using WinXP
and PhotoShop. Here is what I do now. Please advise if this can be improved. 1. When opening a b&w file in PS I convert to QTR-Gray Lab space from my default Dot Gain 20%. I use Dot Gain 20% because I don't see a choice of QTR-Gray Lab in Color Settings. 2. After finishing editing I then convert to QTR-Gray Matte Paper or Gray Photo Paper depending on whether I am printing to matte paper or glossy paper. I convert vs apply because the Win version requires me to save the file before exporting it to QTR. 3. I then jump to QTR, fill out the form and print. So far my prints look good but can I do better? 4. One problem I see is constantly changing back and forth between gray lab and Gray Paper. Does this degrade the file? Is there a way to set the default color setting as Gray Lab? Should I do so? One other question: Can I use Eboni black instead of Epson MK and get better Dmax on matte paper while using the curves supplied with QTR? Thanks, Chuck |

Sorry, I mean 'curve' when I say 'profile'. People sort of get confused no matter which terms we use. Some people expect something called a 'curve' to be a photoshop curve while others expect a 'profile' to mean an ICC-profile only.

All the Epson black inks are warm, but the PK particularly so. The Epson MK ink isn't as warm so this tends to be less of a problem with matte curves. Like I said, I think the problem can be fixed by creating new curves for QTR using the latest version fo Quadprofile where neutralizing the black with other inks is supported. The MIS UT7 inkset is a dedicated grayscale inkset with toner inks that allow you to make prints ranging from cool neutral to strong sepia. MIS-PKN is a Photo black ink designed to be neutral in tone and to give great DMAX on glossy and luster papers: The MIS Gloss Optimizer is basically a coating filled in a catridge. It's used to eliminate bronzing and can be found here: To eliminate bronzing without switching inksets you can try to spray with PremierArt Print Shield. Take a look at this post from Paul yesterday on the DBWTP group: "Depending on what tones you prefer, you can set up the yellow position with the default sepia (slider printing range is slightly warm), a second light carbon UT2-LM (prints neutral on Enhanced Matte with sliders at 0), or put in gloss optimizer for bronze-less glossy printing on Kirkland glossy paper. Paul www.PaulRoark.com" Two points there for you -- one is to consider changing out the yellow for more neutral printing if your not doing Sepia prints, the second is the "favored paper" these days for minimal bronzing seems to be the Kirkland Glossy -- and with GLOP in the yellow position and Paul's curves, word is that the bronzing is all but non-existent. Some say it's completely gone. But then, you don't have Sepia capability, are on glossy paper (rather than semi-glossy/pearl), size is limited to 8X10 unless the groundswell gets big enough to convince Costco to import a larger size, and lastly, you MAY have to use GLOP in the yellow position (some say no, Paul recommends it). Hope this helps. I'm not sure how relevent this is but at one time I wanted my Mac to
be connected to my 2200 via usb and my Dell PC connected to the same 2200 via firewire. I had intermittent problems with this arraingement, called Epson for guidance and was told that Epson won't support this type of setup. My problem was eliminated when I setup a small network between my computers and just connected the printer to one computer and used it as a shared printer. I did find out that QTR doesn't like firewire connections with Mac computers. Best regards, Randy |

purchased the Epson 2100, getting good colour results on Ilford Luster paper and have just invested in a couple of full sets of Epson inks, so i'm loathe to switch inks at this stage. I'd be interested to learn more about the UT7 / MIS-PKN inks etc.. - I'm afraid those terms mean nothing to me!! I'm confused to your references to profiles. I see no reference in QTR GUI to profiles, only to curves - even if had a new profile, I wouldn't know what to do with it!! I'm the one who wrote the windows version of the QuadProfile program. With the previous version of Quadprofile it was impossible to control the tone of the black ink. You could only neutralize the Light Black using light cyan and light magenta inks.

I guess my main problem (other than bronzing which by all accounts is something I have to live with on Luster paper), is that the prints aren’t neutral, they are slightly too warm, even using the UCpk-EPremSemiGloss-cool curves, which is why my original question made a request for some improved curves. I’ve still to experiment with some other built-in curves or a combination of ‘None’ and the UCpk-EPremSemiGloss-cool. ? My monitor is properly calibrated, and colour prints looks nigh on perfect. ?
