Re: Issues with installing drivers for the Epson P5370
开云体育My install command does not have Epson in it. It looks like attached. Also, check your quad file in QTR-Curve and see if it has the correct inks listed as per the attached example with V and MK. Chris From:

Issues with installing drivers for the Epson P5370
Hello all! I am an adjunct professor and lab technician in the photo department at the Santa Fe Community College. We have two Epson P5370 printers that we would like to be able to use with QTR. I found instructions in a previous thread that said to use the following install command: InstallEpsonP5300=P900
When I use this command, it does find the printer but then says there is an ink mismatch, and will not install the qtr curve files. Does anyone know what the issue might be? Also anyone been able to install drivers for the P9570? Thanks! ?
Best,

Re: Measure test prints with digital camera
It isn't necessary for L values read with an eyedropper to be "true" L values, i.e., values you would get from a spectro. For linearization purposes, it is only necessary that the eyedropper L values have the same relationship to one another as the true L values.? You said it yourself in the OP: "As long as there is a maximum black patch and white patch, it seems these act as an internal standard for the image file." |
Re: Measure test prints with digital camera
Thanks for the reply, John. Your points are well taken.
?
Yes, we do have a couple scanners running VueScan and can go that route. It's just one more piece of equipment to train people how to use.?
?
RE my comment about compensating for exposure and lighting, I meant color temperature for lighting and camera exposure. Illumination is uniform so that isn't the issue. I'll try some experiments using window lighting with exposure off an 18% grey card and auto WB. When it's all said and done, you may be right that its just easier to use the scanner.
?
Take care,

Re: Measure test prints with digital camera
Thanks, Kirk! I somehow missed seeing this tool when we ordered QTR years ago. I tried it out and it is really slick. Also found this YouTube which does a nice job showing its use. It'll be a good resource for our members.
Appreciate the tip about the Tiffen wedge also.
Take care,

Re: Measure test prints with digital camera
Yes, others (including myself, many years ago) have used a camera, but I do not recommend it for reasons given below. To be clear, any print-based linearization method, not just the QTR methods, face the same choices as to how to measure prints.
?
First of all, you didn't say if you have a scanner. Even an inexpensive scanner will give you better results than a camera. Do you have a scanner?
?
A scanner guarantees virtually uniform illumination. A camera + lights, unless you go to extreme lengths, does not. You say "This could be used to compensate for exposure and lighting." You can't compensate for uneven illumination. If you insist on a camera, I suggest getting one of the folding photo "cubes" used by people who photograph small items to sell on eBay. Get one with lights built in. I have one that I use for photographing finished prints (I don't have a scanner), so I can tell you that they're clumsy and take up space. A cube with all the bells and whistles will end up costing about the same as an inexpensive scanner.
?
If you are exposing your prints in an lightbox that also does not provide uniform illumination, then using a camera to measure your prints, unless you take serious precautions, simply compounds the problem. The symptom will be iterations that do not converge quickly to linearity. The problem will be even worse if you are making digital negatives for a high-contrast process.?

Re: Measure test prints with digital camera
开云体育There is a photoshop script that performs this operation. ?The script requires the use of a known gray scale reference as part of the scanned image to feed the script L reference values that are used to perform adjustment and?reading of the step wedge pattern you printed in your test print.See: And download the "QTR Stepwedge Tool: QTR-StepWedge-Tool.zip” Then follow the documentation, included with the download of the .jsx file that gets installed in the Scripts folder of PS. I have used the gray step wedge contained in the Tiffen Q-13 Small Color Separation Guide: The gist is, you scan or shoot your test print and the gray Tiffen step wedge together and bring the resulting image into PS. ?The script will prompt you to select reference patches on the Tiffen target, modify your scan to bring it into conformity with these patches (via a Levels adjustment), and then prompt you to select your test print step wedge. ?It will then sample the patches in your test print and output L values for the 21 patches to a text file. I suppose you could kludge something manually with a known target (perhaps a CC target) and use that target to set black, white, and gamma and then sample your test step wedge print manually, reading off the L values (set up the Info panel for 32 bit L for greater precision). I suppose that you really want the scanned or shot image to be devoid of any Automagic adjustments so that you can measure the uniform gray step wedges without a contrast curve or some other monkey business injected into your process, so factor that in. ?I’ve only done the scanner route, with an Epson V850 running Silverfast with all auto adjustments disabled. ?But I suppose the linearizing step of the QTR process would handle any funkiness in your step wedge data. ? Take what I am saying with a grain of salt, I am not super experienced with all of this outside of my specific processes (positive inkjet prints and DN for silver gelatin printing based ?on Pictorico film DNs). ?I hope others more knowledgable than me chime in. ? Good luck! Kirk

Measure test prints with digital camera
I've been reading about using QTR to make a DN for darkroom?prints (silver gelatin). After making the test print (or step wedge), it appears that a flatbed scanner can be used to scan the print and measure the resulting digital file with Photoshop. We don't have access to a proper densitometer or other spectrometer devices. Has anyone tried using a digital camera (DSLR or mirrorless) to?take a picture of the test print and measure the file in PS? As long as there is a maximum black patch and white patch, it seems these act as an internal standard for the image file. This could be used to compensate for exposure and lighting. I'm sure someone has done this before - I just can't find any mention of this. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, RC Wieboldt |
Print Stopping After an Inch or So
Hello, I’m relatively new to QTR — I’ve been using it for a little over a month — and I’ve run into a strange issue. I’m printing on an Epson P7000, and today, whenever I send a job to the printer, it starts printing but stops after about an inch. The status then changes to “waiting,” and the job never resumes. I’ve waited it out for over 30 minutes, but nothing changes. I’ve already tried restarting both my Mac and the printer, reinstalling QTR, and rerunning the install command for the P7000. Unfortunately, the issue persists — the print still stops after the first inch or so. I tested printing through the standard Epson driver using Print Tool, and that worked just fine. So it really seems like the issue is isolated to QTR communicating with the printer. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions for how to fix it? Thanks, |
Re: Need help with separate Mac for printing DN only
Disregard the second issue- found the "layout" drop down menu.??

Re: Need help with separate Mac for printing DN only
Hi Michael,? I apologize for this being so delayed.? Finally have a chunk of time to set up the Mac Mini and softwares.? Quick question on Print Tool- If I bring over an image onto my mac mini (no internet, no PS, no LR, no Adobe- strictly on Print Tool and QTR)? I'm unsure how to print just a regular inkjet print when choosing color management. I really only print digital negatives, but occassionally print inkjet prints on paper.? Do you have a screenshot of your Print tool setting you wouldn't mind sharing?? And Print Color Management etc?? (Print Tool, Print driver?? No Management?)?? Secondly:? I downloaded the Epson P800 driver straight from Epson and deleted the airprint.? When I click on Paper and PRint settings in Print Tool I only get the attached option.? Not the usual Print setting options. (Excuse the phone photo.? Didn't want to connect to the internet to tranfer the screenshot. )?

Re: Revisiting Carbon 6/7/8 in 2024
Hi Jeff - I am new to this group.? Thanks for your videos and postings about rescuing your printer.? I was recently gifted a non-working 7800 was wanting to ask you a couple of questions if I could.? To summarize, the 7800 had sat for about ten years unused, am trying to clean it and get it working again.? I have a 9800 that I have owned and printed with since 2006 so I am familiar with those printers but this 7800 has old ink stuck in the C, M and Y lines that won't clear. I have run two init fills using piezo and all the other 5 lines seem to have cleared or partially cleared, but not those three.? I was also given a set of inkjetmall's cleaning carts and 700ml of piezoflush., and? I just purchased a gallon of piezo and was planning to fill all the carts with that, remove the damper holder as in your video and try to pull piezo through all the lines using an inkjetmall syringe like the one you used in your video to unclog and clean them, then replace all the dampers and the o-rings and nozzle extensions with new ones I ordered from Sdott.? I have a small bottle of magic bullet I was also given with the printer and after reading the posts above I thought I would use that as a last step to clean the head, then try and init fill with piezo and run test prints with piezo to check if that clears the lines.? One question I had for you - you posted above that you invested $50CDN for 1L cleaning fluid - can I ask what you are using and where you got it for that price?? That works out to around $35US, and at $300US for 4L for the piezo it is costing me more than twice as much.? I plan to use piezo once I get to the final init fill and printing to check channels, but wouldn't mind having an less expensive alternative for cleaner if it works just as well.? You also put down $160CDN for a 7880 refillable cart set, can I ask where you got those?? The refillable carts I was given with the printer included a receipt showing they cost over three times that.? Curious where you are getting those.? Thanks again for your video and the commentary, really helpful. |
Re: qtr and mac o/s sequoia
Ross, thanks so much for pointing that out - I am a relative newbie to macs - you are most correct 14.2 is sonoma. That's one of the things I hate about macs - the silly names. Again sorry if I cause any confusion On Fri, Apr 11, 2025 at 1:26?PM Ross Jenkins via <rossj=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育I would just point out that 14.2 is not Sequoia, it is Sonoma. ?Sequoia starts with OS 15.Regards, Ross.

FWIW, I'm not it the problems group: my setup is working just fine.
?
Mac Studio M2 Max
OS Sequoia 15.4
Epson P6000 and 3880
QTR 2.8.2
PrintTool 2.3.4

?I'm a Canson Certified fine art printer, and have printed several shows with that combination. They all look as expected.

Re: qtr and mac o/s sequoia
Mike,? As you may know, many people have issues with QTR and MacOS. As a data?point - I am running a mac mini with an M2 -Sequoia 14.2 and my QTR is shown as 2.8.0 with a P900 printer and everything seems to work. I also use QuadToneProfiler- DN-3 with this set up. I use this for cyanotypes, gum and Photogravure?(DTP). I have not upgraded to MacOS 15 and I am fine with QTR 2.8.0 ...... I didn't know QTR had a 2.8.2 - I will have to look into that to see what upgrades have been added, but I will probably stay with my current set up as long as I can.
