This is an image of NGC 2158, a dense open cluster that could be imaged in a short amount of time during tough winter conditions in New Mexico.???
Once thought to be a globular cluster because of its size and density, it is now known to be an intermediate-age, metal-poor open cluster that is a member of the old thin disk population.?
Most open clusters are disrupted by tidal forces in only a few million years yet this cluster is thought to be nearly 2B years old.?
As a result, its original hot blue stars have evolved off the main sequence?
leaving behind a redder population of stars.? The target was imaged during 3 nights in the period from Dec 2024 to Feb 2025 using a 12.5" PlaneWave scope and a QSI-640ws camera at f/8 from SkyPi?
Remote Observatories.? Total LRGB integration was a short 5 hours.
