Recommendations on LiFePO4 battery brands?
2
All--when it comes to purchasing LiFePO4 batteries, does the manufacturer brand make a difference? In other words, are certain brands known to have better performance or is it more like oatmeal--i.e., the product is basically the same and the brand is just marketing? I have a couple of 12.8v 100 Ah LIFePO4 batteries from Li Time. I have really liked both of them--especially the one that is blue-tooth enabled. But a power outage in our neighborhood yesterday was also a wake up call that I need to get at least 2-3 more to handle bare minimum power needs in the event of a more extended power outage. When looking at LiFePO4 batteries on Amazon there seems to be a big difference in price for 100 Ah batteries between different brands. Hence my question: Does the brand make a difference? Is there anything else I should have in mind when considering which batteries to purchase? 73s Mike AE0SC

My Setup
5
I'm running a 40A linear power supply into an Epic PowerGate that also feeds a 50AH LiFePO4 battery. Output goes to a distribution bus that powers three radios, a computer, and a monitor. (Both computer and monitor run on 12V nominal, so I don't worry about a separate computer power supply.) The big hog is the IC-7610, an HF/50 rig that draws 23A when transmitting. During a test of the setup I found that on battery alone the voltage dropped when the IC-7610 was transmitting. It dropped so low that the radio reset itself. So much for LiFePO4 batteries supporting EmComm. My workaround is a DC-DC voltage booster that pumps out 13.8V at up to 30A. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in reverse, so I leave it out of the basic circuit until I have to run without the linear power supply. When that happens, I bypass the power gate, run the battery into the booster and booster output to the distribution bus. Minor pain but with Anderson connectors on everything it only takes a few minutes.

Is this group still active?
2
I am just wondering if this group is still active. I guess I joined after the poll was added. I currently have battery backup for my all the radios in the shack, as well as a 2 meter Winlink Gateway with battery backup. I use a Buddipole Power Plus that keeps a 100Ah Lifepo 4 battery ready to go. In the event of a power outage the Buddipole immediately powers the system. I also have solar pannels in the event that power is out for an extended period of time. Please feel free to let me know how anyone else accomplishes their power backup needs. I am always interested in possibly better ideas. 73 W0FLA

Poll Results
WOW, the results from a poll last month looks like everyone is headed in the right direction. Please see the capture attachment. Even if you do not see being ready for a power back up system this year, this group has information that will put you in the ball park when the time comes. -- 73 de W3HIZ, Wayne Old Amateur Radio Saying: "Get the fire in the wire and put it up higher".

Bioenno Battery Tips Needed
3
When my power supply crapped out, I decided to use the 15-amp battery I bought a while back to keep operating until I made other arrangements. That's when I realized that I had no idea how much I could draw from it for how long before something could go terribly wrong. If I leave the 2-amp Bioenno charger plugged in, it gets quite hot to the touch while operating FT8 with my 991A at only 20 watts. Is this normal? Is this likely to cause a failure somewhere? If I spend $50 on one of the in-line meters, how do I find out how to interpret the info it shows? Everybody seems to recommend these types of batteries, but I can't find any practical advice for beginners.

What does it mean "to be ready"?
2
My current system uses an Epic PowerGate that distributes power from either a 50A linear supply or a 50 AH LiFePO4 battery. So I'm ready for some outages. I also have a folding solar panel that I can deploy on the roof and plug into the PowerGate and charge the battery as long as the sun is shining. (SoCal, it usually is.) Is that "ready"? For how long and at what OPTEMPO in what weather do we need power in order to say "we are ready"? PatMc AJ6MJ

Eligibility for this group
2
Hello to all and thank you for adding me to this group. I may have been overly eager to join this group since I don’t have nor am I likely to have a solar, wind or portable Emcomm station. I have certain health issues that made it necessary for me to invest in a natural gas powered generator for backup power. I know that there are many good arguments against this but it boiled down to what I could maintain myself and what I had space for. That all being said, does that put me out of bounds for this group? No hard feelings if it does. 73, John KN4BLF

Files
We have a files section now, check it out and add as you see fit. I have updated the mission of this group: This group is dedicated to being ready- locally, regionally and nationally to help pass traffic in an emergency. It is dedicated to alternative sources of energy, utilizing battery, solar, wind and associated power sources. We have the Amateur license, we have the radios and applications- now we need the back up power system in place. The digital aspect is from my belief, that in an emergency situation traditional modes and circuits will become too burdened. Then there is the security aspect as SSB, FM and CW with a reader can become compromised. whereas digital traffic is secure. The purpose is to share what we have, what works for us- so that others can learn and in turn share with others. We do not discuss news, politics or religious views as these will cause problems that will keep us from our common cause. -- 73 de W3HIZ, Wayne Old Amateur Radio Saying: "Get the fire in the wire and put it up higher".

The Reason for this group
5
As this group becomes more active, and on reading the discussions thus far. I want to clarify this groups mission: It is dedicated to alternative sources of energy, utilizing battery, solar, wind and associated power sources. We do not want to duplicate the activities of other groups, that would be fruitless. I will pony up some funds to allow us to have a file section, lets put resources there like .pdf's. That would allow others to go right to that folder for the information they need. If there is a disaster and the grid is down, we can if we choose to help others through our hobby. Securing our homes and families, is job number one. Having energy sources to do that is the reason for this group, as I see it. I welcome your thoughts. 73 de W3HIZ, Wayne

Other Digital EmComm Groups
5
I am currently a member of two other groups focusing on Digital EmComm. Both are in 开云体育 EmComm Training, or the EmComm Training Organization (ETO) focuses on Winlink, and organizes regular exercises that used to be called "Winlink Thursday." A spin-off from that group is EmComm Direct Messaging, which concentrates on Winlink P2P and VARAC. It also holds regular exercises. I suggest that you all check those two groups out. QRV-Digital shouldn't be duplicating what these others do, but needs to find its own niche. PatMc AJ6MJ

New in ARES
2
Good morning, Thanks for the add to the group. Name here is Jeff, KY4JDC. I am fairly new to the radio hobby, licensed about three years now. I am active in the McCracken County, Ky ARES group. We have begun to deploy and work with Winlink and VARA. I use both VARA FM and HF. Out big concerns here in this region are the New Madrid fault zone, tornadoes and flooding. So far we have deployed three digipeaters, one gateway and a local post office. Several members have assembled mobile systems with laptops etc. I am very interested, but do far a bit disappointed with the lack of smart phone integration. I have an iPhone and can use Radio Mail, but have no TNC interfacing to my HTs. I know VCG, BTech and Radiodity have HTs with Blutooth that do the trick, but availability is limited. So for now, my FT5D and a laptop work great, but I would love to hear more from the community on how to develop PTT and data transmission with just an HT and smartphone. 73 de KY4JDC
