New DX from Buddipole Hex
On November 26 at the home QTH I had a qso on 10m ssb with HD8CW who was on a dxpedition in the Galapagos Islands that was sponsored by Buddipole. He was using an IC 7300 running 100 watts to a Buddipole Hexbeam and working the world¡¡huge pile-up and all paid for by our friends at Buddipole. Hey guys there are some possibilities here. Think of an all expenses paid dx adventure to some beautiful tropical island in the far Marquesas with minimal equipment to shlep. I¡¯m thinking of our more intrepid colleagues(are you listening Dave C, Paul Z, Hiroki?). Something to ponder perhaps. K6OKDave

NaP3 Setup for Panadapter and Waterfall Display from QRP-Labs QMX/QMX+ Transceiver
2
This post is from the QRP Labs google group by Carol KP4MD. It¡¯s how to setup a Pandapter and waterfall display for a QMX/QMX+. She also loaded a couple of videos of the waterfall display showing CW and also SSB being received on the QMX. I think I saw recently something on the forum about Hans adding SSB capabilities soon, The future addition of SSB was know when he announced the QMX but said it would come in a future software update. Maybe the future in now! He usually makes big announcements at Hamvention so maybe he is waiting for ¡°Four days in May¡± for SSB. I hope he releases it sooner. A Powerful Gift!
2
Free to a good home is a vintage Knight Kit P-2 SWR/power meter. These are simple and rugged units with many uses, 5.0/5 rating on eHam. This particular P-2 has the interesting characteristic of being hyper-sensitive. When passing 5W to a dummy load, I had to turn the sensitivity control almost all the way CCW (i.e., min sensitivity) for full-scale power meter deflection on the Forward setting. Another P-2 that I own required nearly full-CW rotation (i.e., max sensitivity) for FS reading on Forward under same condx. If I connect the gift P-2 "backwards," i.e., transmitter to antenna port and vice-versa (forward / reverse paths are symmetrical), sensitivity appears normal. Wiring appears correct and the knobs are new. Could make an interesting project or could be a "feature" for QRP ops! Any takers? Best, --David KM6RI

Pipe sizes
Some while back, there was a discussion about pipe sizes. For example, does ?¡± specify the ID or OD? In the 21st century the correct answer is neither. Starting in the early 1700¡¯s steam engines were being developed. They needed pipes for steam and water. Different shops started making pipes and fittings and valves. Then the steam engine people wanted higher pressures which meant thicker walls. If the OD was kept the same, fittings and valves did not need to be re-tooled. So the ¡°next generation¡± of 1 inch pipe might have an ID smaller than 1 inch. From time to time, improvements in metallurgy and processing allowed thinner walls and cost reduction so the ID might be bigger than 1¡±. And every shop had it¡¯s own specific sizes. Why would they want to share the business with a competitor? In the 1920¡¯s standards committees published ¡°schedules¡±. ¡°1/2 inch¡± refers to a schedule (or table) of dimensions. PVC pipe commonly comes in Schedule 40 and Schedule 80. Both have an OD of 0.840. The ID is 0.602 for Sch 40 and 0.526 for Sch 80. I suspect that, ¡°40¡± and ¡°80¡± might be echos of terms originally meant for 40 or 80 psi steam. There are different schedules for copper pipes and stainless steel pipes and ... Anyway if you are thinking about a project, it is best to look up the schedule of dimensions to know what size wooden dowels and U-bolts you will need. And you can blame this situation of a committee. Yesterday, running QRO at the home QTH on 10m cw, I had a qso with ZD7VJ on St. Helena Island. If you recall your high school history it was Napoleon¡¯s final stop after he met his Waterloo. RIP Monsieur Bonaparte. K6OKDave

OT - if you are looking for a cheap but great trip
3
Because of the very weak Yen, you can have a glorious trip to Japan cheaply now. Not only can you fly cheaply by ZipAir (a subsidiary of the JAL) as below, you can get a decent hotel room for under $100/night (with breakfast!) in Tokyo and eat each meal under $10. This sort of situation has never happened in my life time and it will unlikely happen again. Just in case you are interested. Time change
7
Personally, I think day light savings time is a reasonable way to deal with the changing solar time. In summer I wish for double DST because the sun is steaming in my window long before it is time to get up. There¡¯s seldom much DX at dawn, but often good DX hours after sunset. The fall change isn¡¯t too much bother because natural circadian rhythm tends to be longer then 24 hours. The spring change and getting up early that can be more stressful. Very few people on this email have a schedule that is tightly linked to some scheduled activity like working in an office. So don¡¯t make the change in a one jump. Adjust your daily activity like meals and wake up by 30 minutes. Then, a couple days later, by another 30 minutes. A couple years ago I was preparing for a long trip. Starting well ahead, I set my alarm 30 minutes earlier each day. I remember being confused when Al Roker wasn¡¯t on the TV when I was eating breakfast. The first morning in London I woke up at dawn ready to go. A history lesson: The Roman¡¯s had many sundials. Important public building had sundials. Big private homes had sundials. They were cut from stone. No moving parts. They were made so the sun rose at 6AM and set at 6 PM, every day. 12 hours of sunlight everyday all year round. Obviously workers were expected to get more done during a summer day than a winter day.

saving measurements from nanoVNA

Many of you have used nanoVNA for antennas and other purposes. Can anyone suggest how to save data to files on a computer? There are several apps that purport to do that, but I didn't rather not try several to find one that's actually useful.

I will be at the Baylands starting with lunch. Hope to see many of you. The high bands seem to be hot. I am seeing a lot of WSPR activities on the 10m. Thank you Eric and Jeff to acknowledge my signal on the forum. Has anyone else been experiencing an odd behavior of the [email protected] site? It sent out a message saying that I am unsubscribed and a few days later it sent out the message that I am newly subscribed. It looked as though the site has been manipulated from outside. What did you think of Pacificon
5
I would like to hear other opinions of Pacificon. Here are my thoughts in no particular order of importance. 1. Crowd was down. If we want to keep having a big convention in the bay area, we must support it by attending and getting others to attend. 2. Talk selection was poor. We need better speakers with a wider variety of subjects. I'm sure there are 4 or 5 members of this group who could give a great talk on building, operating portable, contesting, chasing dx, qrp. We need to step up! 3. Qrp sessions went well, but definitely need to improve. We have plans to do that. 4. Vendors. They definitely need more vendors. No Icom, no Kenwood??? It was good to see Elecraft, Yaesu and Flex. Where was Hexbeam, Buddipole, and Stepper IR? 5. It was great to see friends although I missed Joy and didn't get to meet Connie. I did see Barry, Dave C., Paul, Bob, Rex, Pete, and Hiroki from this list.. So there were 10 that I know of from this list who attended, good job. Ok, your turn

Silenzio, Per Favore
7
The RF noise level at my QTH has me going berzerko... at times I am seeing S9+15 dB on 20 and 15M, though it sometimes settles down to S6-7 during the wee hours. Nearly S9 at the moment (these readings on my Kenwood TS590SG). The neighbor's new solar/battery setup cannot be helping. My addiction to magloops has me thinking about W6LVP's receive loop. Does anyone have experience with it? See W6LVP.com and https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=13215. Thanks, and best, --David KM6RI
