Sounded like fun Eric. You and Hiro know how to keep it simple and make Qs when the rest of us are fiddling around with our antennas.?

As for our Sunday Ops:

For background, the last time Dave C, Hiro, Neil, and myself operated at Seaport, Hiro set up his new Illy coffee can antenna. In short time, we were visited and questioned twice by the local security guards and building management. We now check in before operating at that site.?

On Sunday, Hiro brought out his new and improved Dubai vertical to Windy Hill. I lost count of how many people stopped by and learned about or were re-familiarized with ham radio after observing the antenna. Even the drivers on Skyline would come to a screeching stop and walk over?to?our site.? ??
Before we knew it, a ranger stopped by to ask Hiro to leash his ferocious dog and explain what we were doing with this bright silver device. I was given a card and asked to check with headquarters to see if our activity required a permit. Upon her leaving, we returned to our hobby at hand.

Shortly thereafter, two more rangers stopped by and began asking questions. One of them was the area supervising ranger who is responsible for all of the Regional Open Spaces. So.....from here on out, we are required to call Leslie Wright at the District Office and request a permit for any radio Ops. I have dealt with Leslie before and the process is easy and quick. Her phone number is 650-691-1200. For the record, all three rangers were friendly and polite.?

Lastly, I hope no one thinks that I would suggest that Hiro's towering vertical is responsible for attracting all the policing activity. With that said, I only hope that SealPoint in San Mateo and Pacifica do not have a permitting process!

Good show. I am glad to have another mag loop enthusiast in the group. Did you try seeing how directional it is? ?In my experience, the transmitted signal is more directional at the receiving end than when you are receiving (which is considerable as you no doubt sensed, more directional than a full-size dipole.) I'd love to see a true A/B comparison between the mag loop and the vertical.

About your "Great Escape" scene, did you have any QSOs using the waterspout?

Tim and I were at Windy Hill on Saturday. We did not connect with Nick or two Davids, but the 17 and 20 were in good shape. I was just surfing the net looking for old parts and came across the following items. ?Thought some of you might be interested in these for your antenna projects.

Dear Gange:

With the weather a little warmer today, I headed out ot the baylands for a last-minute outing.? Using?my K2 and AlexLoop mag loop, I worked into Pennsylvania and Japan on 20 CW running 10 watts.? Later I tried busting a pileup on a PJ8 on SSB, but couldn't get it done.? I heard many JAs so conditions seemed pretty good.? There were a lot more people at the park with the?nicer weather.

I am becoming a magloop enthusiast!? This is my third outing with it so its a little early to tell, but so far I think it works much better than my Buddistick.? Although to be fair I should take the Buddistick out to the wetlands and see how it does side by side.? I'm not sure?the loop?could compete with a 26' wire in a tree, but for a tree-less location it is pretty amazing.? What I like best about it is that you can set it up in 2 minutes, including tuning, so its great for a grab-and-go antenna.? The Buddistick is a little fiddly, but it does pack small and raises no eyebrows from hotel personnel? :-)?? Let the experiments continue!

This reminds me of a story...a few years back when I just getting into portable ops, I was in San Diego for a conference.? I was staying at the Marina Sheraton, which has umpteen stories.? My room was on the second floor as I recall, not high enough to drape a wire out the window.? But running up alongside my balcony was a long waterspout that went the full height of the building.? There was a little metal tab protruding in just the right place, but my room looked out over the parking lot and there was a bored parking-lot attendant there.? I stood by the spout and and ground away at the caked-on paint on that little tab--but the lot attendant kept looking up at me so I would freeze whenever he did.? The when he turned away I would start scrapinig again.? It flet like something out of "The Great Escape."?

The jig was up when I clipped the tab to my Elecraft T1 tuner, and led a piece of coax inside to an MFJ Cub, but at that point I wasn't actually damaging hotel property anymore so he didn't appear concerned.?

Eric WD6DBM????

Hi All,
?
Dave (W6DLF) and I (W6VYC) are having a great time. The noise level down here is below sea level you don't even get an S reading. We have made a good many contacts on SSB state side and I think a couple of foreign on PSK. We have a long wire on PSK and my Jackite vertical up on a hill for SSB.

Hiro,

I'll bring the stock base and clamp with me. My only tripod is a bit heavy duty for such a light antenna. Yes, I will be threading up additional pieces of 3/8" rod to increase the base height, but may not have time between now and then. If I keep modifying the MP-1, it could end up as a full size 40 meter vertical?

Tim, instead of a ground spike you can also easily use a camera tripod (heavier the better, but a light one will work, too) to keep the MP-1 off ground. The clamp and aluminum piece that came with the MP-1 allow you to attach it to anything. You may want to use additional small carpenter's clamp. In fact, you can directly attach it to the picnic table. Have you thought of increasing the length of the bottom steel piece by connecting an extra bolt??

Hi Hiro and the rest of the group.

First off, I will be happy to meet you up on Skyline on Saturday. Also,?I just received my 9 1/2' telescoping whip to attach to the top of the MP-1. Now I only need to put some kind of a ground spike together, so the antenna will be off the ground a couple of feet. I can meet you a little earlier if it works for you.

Nice to see so many members out in the field this weekend. Have a great weekend Nick. As for the Dave Crocker, Dave Flack, and Neil......stay warm and enjoy the serenity and salt ground in Death Valley. Let's hope the solar gods bless us all with ample propagation.

Nick et al,

Looks like we may potentially have three subgroups operating this weekend: Death Valley, Henry Coe and Windy Hill. Can we all agree to try to listen/transmit on the QRP frequencies: (both USB and CW) 18157.5+/-, 14342.5+/- QRM.

Thank you for the invitation.? I have a backpacking trip down in Henry Coe planned this weekend.? I'll be out on Saturday and Sunday.? I'm planning on being on the air once we get to camp.? I believe I'm open next Saturday, have to work in the late-afternoon though.

Sunday

Eric WD6DBM

I'll bring the stock base and clamp with me. My only tripod is a bit heavy duty for such a light antenna. Sorry to be so invisible for so long. I guess I missed the notice that you'd be there, since I hadn't yet signed up for the Yahoo Group. I wanted to get back into the loop, so I just signed up, taking you up on your offer to waive the reg. fee ;-)

No tuner vs automatic tuner

I have been enjoying many exchanges on these pages in re automatic tuners. I'd like to add my observation: my key message is that you don't necessarily have to use a tuner of any kind.

While I own a number of automatic and manual tuners, including a Z11, and use them for various situations, I do not find it necessary to use any auto tuner with the MP-1 and a home-brew magnetic loop antennas (based on the PY1AHD design; Google is website if interested) when operating 40-10m portable. These two are easily tunable manually to close to 1:1 SWR. About the only time I really feel the need for some tuner is when I am using a random length wire, non-resonant antennas like a G5RV, or trying to load up an unknown conductor such as a gutter, ladder or a garden heater. Or you want to tune a relatively short antenna for 80 and 160m.

The advantages of skipping a tuner, automatic or manual, are obvious:
1. Cost less. You might wish to invest your money on something else.
2. Reduced weight and bulk for your portable operation.
3. Less power needed. Battery would last longer.
4. No insertion loss between the transmitter and the antenna.

I have a lot of QRP portable operations in the past 10 years and I still don't use a tuner most of the times.

Happy new year and good DX.
