Re: Sunday

Dear Tim:
?
I used to fly radio-control gliders up there, and they required a permit for that AS WELL as insurance!? After a few close calls with gliders not reponding and making a suicide dive for the cars on Skyline I stopped flying there.
?
The ranger pulled up next to me at Baylands on Sunday and conveniently sat there with his truck idling so I could test out the NB on my K2.? It doesn't seem to work very well, so I built another one and I'm about to modify it to see if it works better.? Hopefully the ranger will cooperate and come by for another testing?session.? But he didn't hassle me at all.? Maybe he thought the loop for for tracking tagged animals.

Sounded like fun Eric. You and Hiro know how to keep it simple and make Qs when the rest of us are fiddling around with our antennas.?

As for our Sunday Ops:

For background, the last time Dave C, Hiro, Neil, and myself operated at Seaport, Hiro set up his new Illy coffee can antenna. In short time, we were visited and questioned twice by the local security guards and building management. We now check in before operating at that site.?

On Sunday, Hiro brought out his new and improved Dubai vertical to Windy Hill. I lost count of how many people stopped by and learned about or were re-familiarized with ham radio after observing the antenna. Even the drivers on Skyline would come to a screeching stop and walk over?to?our site.? ??
Before we knew it, a ranger stopped by to ask Hiro to leash his ferocious dog and explain what we were doing with this bright silver device. I was given a card and asked to check with headquarters to see if our activity required a permit. Upon her leaving, we returned to our hobby at hand.

Shortly thereafter, two more rangers stopped by and began asking questions. One of them was the area supervising ranger who is responsible for all of the Regional Open Spaces. So.....from here on out, we are required to call Leslie Wright at the District Office and request a permit for any radio Ops. I have dealt with Leslie before and the process is easy and quick. Her phone number is 650-691-1200. For the record, all three rangers were friendly and polite.?

Lastly, I hope no one thinks that I would suggest that Hiro's towering vertical is responsible for attracting all the policing activity. With that said, I only hope that SealPoint in San Mateo and Pacifica do not have a permitting process!

Eric,

Good show. I am glad to have another mag loop enthusiast in the group. Did you try seeing how directional it is? ?In my experience, the transmitted signal is more directional at the receiving end than when you are receiving (which is considerable as you no doubt sensed, more directional than a full-size dipole.) I'd love to see a true A/B comparison between the mag loop and the vertical.

About your "Great Escape" scene, did you have any QSOs using the waterspout?

Tim and I were at Windy Hill on Saturday. We did not connect with Nick or two Davids, but the 17 and 20 were in good shape. Tim was playing with his new ?super-modified MP-1 and I with my Cantenna Espresso (modified again, this time without a loading coil in the center, just a stack of 16 coffee cans with 45 tiny-gauge radial wires made of three computer ribbon cable sets.). I worked a Texas on 17 and a JA on 20, but using 30 watts (actually the Texas guy could hear me when I surreptitiously turned the power down to 2.5 watts. QRP lives! We heard HK1 and PY3 pretty loudly on 20 but didn't work them. ?Something else happened while we were there, involving a visit by a few law enforcement folks. I will let Tim tell you about that part.
