Joy,
Even though English is not spoken widely in Japan, many mono-lingual American visitors have enjoyed traveling to Japan.?
It¡¯s probably the safest country in the world to visit. There is no reason to hesitate. You¡¯d have a blast.
I¡¯d be happy to give you pointers. Also, ask Dave Pollack about his experience of visiting Japan as an American.

It's funny you mentioned that. A friend asked me just the other night if I was interested in going to Japan and I said no and then I was sent an alert from going.com that there was a cheap flight from SFO to Tokyo. ?I initially told her "no" mostly because I have never been there and I thought the language barrier would be too great. Simple things like reading street signs would be impossible. What do you think Hiroki? It just seems like a big barrier compared to going to other countries where you can. at least, recognize the letters/numbers? How would a person who doesn't speak Japanese do??
