Re: QRP+Companion
Ah, yes, the K2s.? #1? I built the first one myself.? Tuner, Audio filter, maybe a bit more but no SSB or DSP #2? KK7P the designer of the K2 DSP unit was selling his K2 with DSP, Tuner, SSB etc.? I bought it. ????? #3? I bought a fairly well loaded 100w K2 since propagation sucks from up here above 61 degrees north. I thought I needed the dB advantage which was probably true. You all know the old saying, "If one K2 is good then three is better."?? Right?? I do like the K2.? The MDS on #1 (I forget which band) was -139 dBm. Then the 1st K2 lost its sidetone.? Not fixed yet.? Taken apart and in a box. The 2nd K2 is just fine at 10-15 watts. The 3rd K2 I just never got the 20 amp PS hooked up.? I did run it at 5 watts a bit.? Needs a tuner. I used to "crastinate" but I got so good I turned "Pro-"?? :-) Take care 73, Jim, AL7FS Jim Larsen 1-907-223-3548 On Fri, Nov 6, 2020 at 2:54 AM Guy Mengel <guy@...> wrote: Hi Jim and Dave, |

What fun watching you two talk. I hear 17 Meters is not bad and is coming to life. I have not been on in a while. My what a lot of rigs you have Jim! KX-3 is a complicated beauty.. but I have no interest there. The K2¡¯s are a more standard rig (you were creating a contest setup?). At least you KNOW what the guts are. I am going to build something basic and run with it. Wes Hayword W7ZOI (He¡¯s 81 now) have been talking and there are but few that have built something like what he is using on EMRFD pages 6.37 and following. This is the Blue rig on his website.. The SST is a neat rig too.. It is fun going back to basic operation, simply tuning around and listening then making a call. I hope you and your families are well! Dave and I email often.. he¡¯s a champ in my eyes! 73 Guy PS.. Jim, if you ever want to surplus one of your K2¡¯s let me know! Guy Mengel guy@... Where are you located, Dave?? I am too lazy to look you up.? :-) ? If you are in the PNW, there is a chance on 20 meters.? Mostly I run my Kenwood TS-570D.? I recently took my two K2s, my Omni VI+ and my big rig (I can never remember what it is) out of the lineup.? :-)?? I actually have three K2s but that's another story.? Ah...just remembered...Icom IC-756 Pro.? My rotators are tango uniform and my 20 meter beam is aimed about at Chicago but it seems to work okay.? It is just a KLM KT-34A up 40 feet. One of these days I will get my Elecraft KX-3 hooked up.? When I bought it (used), I put an antenna tuner in it but then never figured out how to make it work.? Gave up.? :-)? One of these days I will have to read the manual.? How's that for genius thinking? Somewhere I have a 20 meter SST.? That would be fun to try again, too. Take care. 73, Jim, AL7FS Jim Larsen 1-907-223-3548 On Thu, Nov 5, 2020 at 8:20 PM David KK7SS <d3j452@...> wrote:

Hi Jim, I would just love to qso with you... just waiting for propagation?to improve and to get my code?back up to at least 10-12 wpm. My antenna is a ground mounted trap vertical..? About 15 years? ago I made a 5W contact with Beijing on 10M? .. I can hear the northern VE7's on 40M in the mornings, but my trap dipole is only 12 ft off the ground (neighbors!}? 'Dig" your QRP+?out anyway..? make sure it's still functioning? :-) We might make it on 20M.. 73 de ?Dave G. KK7SS On Thu, Nov 5, 2020 at 8:15 PM AL7FS-Jim.Larsen <jimlarsen2@...> wrote:

Re: QRP+Companion
If you would just fix the propagation from Alaska for me I would dig out my QRP+ and put a fresh battery in it.? Mine does not put out much power so I don't or haven't run it much in the last five plus years. Dale, The QRP+ files referenced in some emails you have posted today contain info copied directly from my
.? Why not just post a file containing a link to the site?? That way people could see all of the information. Larry W1HUE On 10/12/2020 9:18 AM,

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDave, You can attach an LED to he meter as described .? I have seen information on replacing the display with a back-lite version but I am unable to find that information now. Larry - W1HUE On 10/12/2020 8:20 AM, David KK7SS

Another day spent indoors..? :-(
Played with the tuner in the Companion and noticed two things.. 1) If the antenna is resonant at the chosen frequency the tuning is almost flat. But 2) if the antenna is NOT resonant, the tuning gets very sharp. I used my 40M antenna and tried loading up on 60M.. Worked like a charm. :-) |

Kees;
About upgrades to the firmware. These would be un-obtanium for most. Unless you had access to the upgrade and an emprom burner. W1HUE published way back in 1997 (23 years ago) this: ----quoting from the January 1997 QRP Journal ----- Index has made several "firmware" upgrades for the QRP+ available as new EPROMs for the very nominal charge of S6 .00 plus return of the old EPROM. The most recent version of which I am aware is designated "Rev 4C". (Note that this is model specific - the QRP++ may well use a different EPROM.) The Rev 4C EPROM contains several programming changes that affect the internal keyer and the switched capacitance audio filter (SCAF). If you do not have this latest version, you should contact Index for an upgrade. How do you tell if you have this version or not? Simple: If you did not upgrade, you don't have it! If you obtained your rig used and don't know its hi story, a couple of simple tests wi ll determine whether or not you have the latest EPROM: If the internal keyer speed changes in increments of 5 WPM, you don't have it. If the keyer speed changes in increments of 1 WPM but an external keyer cannot be fo llowed above about 27 WPM, then you still don't have it (you probably have Rev 03). This is all I know about this. This radio is an oldy but a goodie. The radio would have to be completely redesigned to use a different more up to date processor. the 80C39. When I was working at Intel back in the mid eighties this was one of my products.. it is basically an 8051 CPU running at 8mhz. A real workhorse. Most likely this was programmed in Assembler so upgrading this would be a real chore. More information about the QRP + is located here: He no longer owns his qrp+, I do... I got it in a round about way. There is tons of information here. I am not sure how long he intends to keep this web page up though. 73 N1GMM |
